How did the treatment work for Robin? And for Dylan? Studying individual youth treatment mediators using single-case experimental designs
Study of individual treatment mechanisms in youth interventions facilitates evidence-based development, selection and implementation of treatment components that are most effective for each individual child. This position paper aims to bring together two important topics from the area of youth intervention research: mediators of treatment outcomes and single-case experimental design methodology. We start by outlining the benefits of studying within-person mechanisms and propose how statistical mediation analysis and single-case methods can be integrated to enable this type of research. Further, we review existing methodology for the study of individual youth treatment mechanisms and provide recommendations for the clinical practice research
Belovode excavation results
The NeolithicāChalcolithic site of Belovode covers approximately 40 ha (Figure 1). In the two fieldwork campaigns of 2012 and 2013, only 31.5 m2 was excavated due to the archaeometallurgical focus of the project. The trench was positioned on the eastern platform of the settlement, where previous excavations had uncovered significant metallurgical evidence in Trenches 3 (Å ljivar and JacanoviÄ 1997c, RadivojeviÄ et al. 2010a) and 17, which are located to the north and the south of Trench 18 respectively. A 5 x 5 m area was opened in the 2012 season and then, based on the preliminary spatial analysis of metallurgical finds, in 2013 the trench was slightly expanded with a 2 x 3 m extension on the eastern side
The VinÄa culture: an overview
This chapter reviews the archaeological evidence for the VinÄa culture, the broader archaeological context for the majority of the metal production and metal artefacts extensively explored in Chapter 3, as well as for the sites of Belovode and PloÄnik, whose investigation forms the core of The Rise of Metallurgy in Eurasia project. The chapter will provide a lengthy introduction to the current data and interpretations of the VinÄa culture that are subsequently developed in far greater detail in the thematic overviews by many of the leading specialists in later chapters (Chapters 39ā52). This monograph seeks to address, at least in part, the absence of a dedicated synthesis of the VinÄa culture since Chapmanās (1981) monograph (see Chapman 2020b for a critical reflection).
The concept of archaeological cultures remains problematic in European prehistory in terms of definition and interpretation, yet extremely resilient in the absence of comparable empirically orientated alternatives (Roberts and Vander Linden 2011). Due to competing national traditions of scholarship, the culture history groupings and terminologies are strikingly complex in the later prehistoric Balkans (Gori and Ivanova 2017; Tsirtsoni 2016a). As such, the chapter explores the historiography and complex debates that surround the archaeological and temporal definitions of the VinÄa culture. The importance of the VinÄa culture lies not only in the evidence of early metallurgy but also in the evidence for the expansion of material culture production and circulation, the intensification of agriculture and increase in sedentism and settlement growth, which are all subsequently reviewed. The chapter concludes by examining past and present interpretations of the communities who lived and died within what we now term the VinÄa culture
Parental involvement in CBT for anxiety-disordered youth revisited:Family CBT outperforms child CBT in the long term for children with comorbid ADHD symptoms
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to examine the efficacy of child cognitive-behavioral therapy (CCBT) versus family CBT (FCBT) in anxiety-disordered youth with high and low comorbid ADHD symptoms. METHOD: Youth with anxiety disorders (n = 123, aged 8-18) were classified in four groups according to (a) the type of CBT received (child vs. family) and (b) their comorbid ADHD symptoms, measured with the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) Attention Problems syndrome scale level (normal vs. [sub]clinical). Severity of anxiety disorders was assessed with Anxiety Disorders Interview Schedule-Child and Parent (ADIS-C/P) version and anxiety symptoms via a 71-item anxiety symptom questionnaire, the Screen for Child Anxiety and Related Emotional Disorders (SCARED-71), before and after CBT, and at 3 months and 1-year follow-ups. RESULTS: Based on the severity of anxiety disorders, children with high ADHD symptoms profit more from FCBT than CCBT in the long term. For children low on ADHD symptoms, and for anxiety symptoms and attention problems, no differences between CCBT and FCBT occurred. CONCLUSION: Family involvement seems a valuable addition to CBT for children with comorbid anxiety and ADHD symptoms
Relative and absolute chronologies of Belovode and PloÄnik
The chronology of the sites of Belovode and PloÄnik has been discussed several times in the past two decades since excavations were renewed at each site (ArsenijeviÄ and ŽivkoviÄ 1998; Å ljivar 1996; Å ljivar and JacanoviÄ 1996a; Å ljivar and KuzmanoviÄ CvetkoviÄ 1997a), though not in detail and rarely integrating the relative and the absolute chronological sequences. Chronologies from both sites have been published (Whittle et al. 2016), drawing upon eight radiocarbon dates from the two trenches then existing for Belovode (Trenches 7 and 8) and nine radiocarbon dates from three trenches for PloÄnik (Trenches 14, 15 and 16). These dates were allegedly focussing on the dating of metallurgical finds, however, the nature of those finds was not known at the time, so the best guess was to date materials from the spits, which only adds to the doubt on the chronological precision achieved.
The seriation and ceramic sequences of both sites resulting from this project are discussed in detail elsewhere in this volume (see Chapters 12, 13, 27 and 28) and in this chapter will be used only to illustrate relative chronology compared to other chronologies used for VinÄa culture (see Chapter 4). The identical spit and context excavation methodology employed on both sites enables us to compare chronologically sensitive pottery forms to other relevant sites of the period. This chapter presents 29 new radiocarbon dates from throughout the excavated sequences: 17 from Trench 18 at Belovode and 12 from Trench 24 at PloÄnik. The systematic excavations, relative ceramic sequences and the intensity of radiocarbon dating enables a far more precise modelling of dates for the identifiable activity horizons at both sites
Challenged by cognition : toward optimal measurement and greater understanding of youth cognition in school refusal and cognitive behavioural therapy outcome
The main purpose of this dissertation was to highlight and address seven challenges related to the measurement of youth cognition, understanding the role of cognitive constructs in anxiety and school refusal, and the examination of cognitive mediators of cognitive-behavioural treatment outcomes. The studies presented in this dissertation contributed to the empirically valid assessment of constructs of cognitive processing in youth which were until now only present in cognitive theories of Aron Beck. Now, constructs of cognitive processing coming from the cognitive theories of depression and anxiety of Beck and colleagues can be assessed in youth using one single measure. Further, cognitive dimensions of cognitive products and cognitive processes from Beck and colleagues cognitive theories of emotional disorders were found to be important in the etiology of school refusal. The belief that positive treatment outcomes can be achieved through changes in cognition received support. Using innovative statistical approaches to mediation, it was found that enhanced levels of self-efficacy following cognitive-behavioural treatment for school refusal were associated with increased levels of school attendance and decreased levels of school fear.LEI Universiteit LeidenDevelopmental pathways of social-emotional and cognitive functioning - ou
