Washback Effects of Diagnostic Assessment in Greek as an SL: Primary School Teachers’ Perceptions in Cyprus
Washback of diagnostic tools targeted to young migrant learners has been an under-researched area in the language assessment field. This paper explores teachers’ perceptions on the Greek Diagnostic Language Assessment (GDLA) tool recently introduced into the SL preparatory classes of the Cyprus primary education. The tool’s implementation coincides with the launch of a new SL curriculum. The objective is fourfold: (1) to examine GDLA’s washback effects on teaching/assessment, (2) to investigate washback’s variability with respect to several contextual variables, (3) to collect feedback on the perceived credibility of the tool, and (4) to reflect on the use of the GDLA tool as a lever of instructional reform in support of curricular innovation. The study employs a mixed-methods approach and draws on (a) quantitative data (questionnaire, 234 informants) and (b) qualitative data (interviews, 6 participants). The results indicate a positive and quite strong washback on teaching and assessment. However, they bring to the surface several misconceptions on the purpose and the implementation of diagnostic assessment, pointing to gaps in the teachers’ assessment literacy. They also bring into play school administration constraints. Finally, they imply that a diagnostic assessment aligned to a context-sensitive curriculum may bind the test to positive washback
Phonological gradience: grammar models and teaching approaches in modern greek as a second language
This dissertation provides a comprehensive account of categorical and gradientdistinctions in Greek #CC phonotactics from a theoretical and an appliedperspective, since it combines the theoretical tools of grammar modeling withexperimental research, second language acquisition and teaching. To be morespecific, at the theoretical level, phonotactic gradience is investigated across aperipheral cluster subset, O(bstruent)O(bstruent)[-sibilant/-voice] (/ft, xt, pt, kt, fɵ,xɵ/), by taking into consideration several aspects of markedness, i.e. sonoritydistance (MoA), PoA hierarchy, perceptual salience, and lexical generalizations(type and token frequency). Therefore, we propose grammatical models of OO[-sibilant/-voice] consonant clusters that ensure gradient well-formedness. Suchmodels are enriched by lexical statistics, and emerge either from reranked ornumerically weighted constraints. As a result, phonotactic gradience of OO[-sibilant/-voice] is accounted for by means of a variation grammar and a wellformednessgrammar.Moving one step further, we assess experimentally the effectiveness of thelearned grammars and their ability to capture the distributionalgeneralizations of Greek by testing them in relation to the results of twoperception experiments. In order to explore the precise nature of Greekspeakers’ gradient well-formedness intuitions, we conducted two perceptionexperiments, a scalar rating task and a comparative well-formedness task. Ourbasic hypothesis is that Greek speakers mostly rely on grammaticalinformation in order to make categorical and gradient distinctions. This entailsinterplay between grammatical and lexical processes, with grammarcontrolling the speakers’ well-formedness judgments. The results of theexperimental research show a close match between the experimentalobservations and the values predicted by the grammar. They also demonstratethat information regarding probability of lexical patterns partially affects therepresentation and processing of spoken stimuli, which in turn suggests thatphonotactic effects cannot be reduced to mere statistics. In conclusion, theexperimental tasks support a multi-faceted account of phonological knowledge,i.e., one in which probabilistic and phonological parameters are both encodedin the speakers’ grammar. On the basis of these findings, we construct a new grammatical model, couched within the principles of Functional Optimality Theory and HarmonicGrammar. This model represents the native speakers’ perceived grammar. Finally, the research findings are used towards developing linguisticmaterial and teaching methods for second language learners. The emphasis ison a combinatorial approach of oral communication, which underlines thecorrelation between perceptual robustness and proper accent in secondlanguageΗ παρούσα διατριβή προτείνει τη διαμόρφωση μιας διαβαθμιζόμενηςφωνοτακτικής γραμματικής για τα διμελή συμφωνικά συμπλέγματα της νέαςελληνικής (NE) που εμφανίζονται σε θέση λεξικής έμβασης (#CC) μέσω τουσυνυπολογισμού φωνολογικών, φωνητικών και λεξικών παραμέτρων.Συγκεκριμένα, προτείνεται ότι η γραμματική γνώση των φωνοτακτικώνπεριορισμών που διέπουν τον ορθό σχηματισμό των #CC της ΝΕ είναι εγγενώςδιαβαθμιζόμενη, και η διαβάθμιση αυτή ορίζεται με γραμματικά και λεξικάκριτήρια.

Strengthening Heritage Greek Vitality in the United States through a Community-Based Curriculum
Sustainability of Greek as a heritage language in the United States is at stake at present due to the low rates of intergenerational transmission among its speakers, declining immigration from Greece and Cyprus, shortage of specialized teachers, lack of instructional time, old-fashioned teaching methods, and limited opportunities for using the language. This paper builds on the Capacity Development, Opportunity Creation, and Desire (COD) framework (Grin, 2003; Lo Bianco, 2008, Lo Bianco & Peyton, 2013) and elaborates on how a new community-based curriculum (Gavriilidou & Mitsiaki, 2022) can enable heritage Greek vitality by (a) developing capacity through proficiency- based learning (ACTFL, 2012) in formal and informal settings by laying the emphasis on all registers and linguistic varieties in terms of meaning and form; (b) creating opportunities for actual Greek heritage language use through engagement in community, school, and family contexts; and (c) enhancing motivation and desire to use heritage Greek through cognitively challenging content and experiential learning

Dictionnaire des Francophones: A New Paradigm in Francophone Lexicography
Dictionnaire des francophones (DDF) is a general francophone dictionary, the result of an institutional-collaborative project, the goal of which is to provide a new online resource. It aims to cover all varieties of the French lexicon from a descriptive point of view and to highlight the plurality of linguistic norms while endeavouring to treat different linguistic varieties equally. The paper focuses on the dictionary-making process and lexicography technologies used in the project. Some particularly innovative aspects of the DDF are discussed, such as the institutional support and the scientific background in which the project is grounded; the hybrid nature of the dictionary, combining imported resources in a relational database, enriched by a complex speaker-based collaborative input; inclusivity of linguistic variation and the modes of its representation. Taking into account these characteristics as well as some other features of the dictionary lead us to the conclusion that the DDF is a unique object in comparison to existing traditional and collaborative resources, providing a new paradigm in francophone lexicography
