    Sustainable Development, Ecological Complexity, and Environmental Values

    Sustainable Development, Ecological Complexity, and Environmental Values contributes to expanding the idea of sustainability by integrating different thematic issues related to sustainable development in its threefold consideration (economic, social, and environmental) with regard to the case of the Basque Country. On the global scale, changes have clearly accelerated; ecological and social sustainability are two facets of the same changing reality. First, social sustainability depends on ecological sustainability. If we continue degrading nature's capacity to produce the ecosystems' services (water filtration, climate stabilization, etc) and resources (food, materials), both individuals and nations will be affected by growing pressures and increasing conflicts, as well as by threats to public health and personal safety. Second, ecological sustainability depends on social sustainability, a socially unjust and unfair system wiht an ever-increasing population that is not able to have its needs met will necessarily lead to environmental collapse. In addition, human behavior and the social dynamic often lie at the heart of social and ecological problems. It must be, therefore, assumed that there will not be sustainable development if sustainable societies do not first exist. A sustainable society has the challenge of developing human capital.     Caracterización multianalítica de meteorito marciano NWA2975 mediante CF-LIBS, fluorescencia de rayos X y espectroscopía Raman

    La caracterización isotópica y elemental de los meteoritos de Marte ha permitido determinar la cronología de los procesos de formación del planeta y avanzar en la comprensión de su evolución biogeoquímica e hidrológica. Los meteoritos más abundantes son las rocas de origen ígneo, como las shergottitas. Los estudios petrológicos y geoquímicos previos del meteorito Northwest Africa 2975 (NWA 2975), revelaron que se trata de una roca volcánica de grano medio, entre subofítica y granular, compuesta predominantemente por piroxenos (57,3 vol.%) y plagioclasa (38,3 vol. %) completamente enmascarados con fases opacas (2,7 vol.%) y fosfatos (1,7 vol.%) [1]. El instrumento SuperCam a bordo del rover Perseverance (misión MARS 2020 de la NASA) está equipado con técnicas atómicas y moleculares (incluyendo LIBS y Raman) para la detección y análisis a distancia de muestras geológicas en la superficie del Planeta Rojo. La capacidad de estas técnicas se ha demostrado ampliamente en la caracterización de rocas, minerales y suelos en varias misiones espaciales. En el presente trabajo, se analizó un fragmento del meteorito NWA 2975 mediante un sistema de micro-LIBS con el objetivo de revelar su composición química elemental. Debido a la heterogeneidad intrínseca de la muestra, se analizaron diferentes posiciones de su superficie. El análisis cuantitativo de los elementos principales (Si, Al, Fe, Mg, Mn, Ca y O) y de otros elementos menores se llevó a cabo utilizando la metodología Calibration-Free [2]. Los resultados sugieren la presencia de piroxenos como principal componente mineral en las posiciones inspeccionadas, aunque también se pueden encontrar otras fases minerales como la plagioclasa. La información extraída del análisis LIBS se ha comparado con la de fluorescencia de rayos X (XRF) y la espectroscopia Raman. El uso combinado de diferentes técnicas espectroscópicas ha permitido obtener una mejor interpretación de los resultados composicionales.Universidad de Málaga.     The Changing Landscape for Stroke\ua0Prevention in AF: Findings From the GLORIA-AF Registry Phase 2

    Background GLORIA-AF (Global Registry on Long-Term Oral Antithrombotic Treatment in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation) is a prospective, global registry program describing antithrombotic treatment patterns in patients with newly diagnosed nonvalvular atrial fibrillation at risk of stroke. Phase 2 began when dabigatran, the first non\u2013vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulant (NOAC), became available. Objectives This study sought to describe phase 2 baseline data and compare these with the pre-NOAC era collected during phase 1. Methods During phase 2, 15,641 consenting patients were enrolled (November 2011 to December 2014); 15,092 were eligible. This pre-specified cross-sectional analysis describes eligible patients\u2019 baseline characteristics. Atrial fibrillation disease characteristics, medical outcomes, and concomitant diseases and medications were collected. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results Of the total patients, 45.5% were female; median age was 71 (interquartile range: 64, 78) years. Patients were from Europe (47.1%), North America (22.5%), Asia (20.3%), Latin America (6.0%), and the Middle East/Africa (4.0%). Most had high stroke risk (CHA2DS2-VASc [Congestive heart failure, Hypertension, Age  6575 years, Diabetes mellitus, previous Stroke, Vascular disease, Age 65 to 74 years, Sex category] score  652; 86.1%); 13.9% had moderate risk (CHA2DS2-VASc = 1). Overall, 79.9% received oral anticoagulants, of whom 47.6% received NOAC and 32.3% vitamin K antagonists (VKA); 12.1% received antiplatelet agents; 7.8% received no antithrombotic treatment. For comparison, the proportion of phase 1 patients (of N = 1,063 all eligible) prescribed VKA was 32.8%, acetylsalicylic acid 41.7%, and no therapy 20.2%. In Europe in phase 2, treatment with NOAC was more common than VKA (52.3% and 37.8%, respectively); 6.0% of patients received antiplatelet treatment; and 3.8% received no antithrombotic treatment. In North America, 52.1%, 26.2%, and 14.0% of patients received NOAC, VKA, and antiplatelet drugs, respectively; 7.5% received no antithrombotic treatment. NOAC use was less common in Asia (27.7%), where 27.5% of patients received VKA, 25.0% antiplatelet drugs, and 19.8% no antithrombotic treatment. Conclusions The baseline data from GLORIA-AF phase 2 demonstrate that in newly diagnosed nonvalvular atrial fibrillation patients, NOAC have been highly adopted into practice, becoming more frequently prescribed than VKA in Europe and North America. Worldwide, however, a large proportion of patients remain undertreated, particularly in Asia and North America.     The high-resolution map of Oxia Planum, Mars; the landing site of the ExoMars Rosalind Franklin rover mission

    This 1:30,000 scale geological map describes Oxia Planum, Mars, the landing site for the ExoMars Rosalind Franklin rover mission. The map represents our current understanding of bedrock units and their relationships prior to Rosalind Franklin’s exploration of this location. The map details 15 bedrock units organised into 6 groups and 7 textural and surficial units. The bedrock units were identified using visible and near-infrared remote sensing datasets. The objectives of this map are (i) to identify where the most astrobiologically relevant rocks are likely to be found, (ii) to show where hypotheses about their geological context (within Oxia Planum and in the wider geological history of Mars) can be tested, (iii) to inform both the long-term (hundreds of metres to ∼1 km) and the short-term (tens of metres) activity planning for rover exploration, and (iv) to allow the samples analysed by the rover to be interpreted within their regional geological context

    Comparison of four polymerase chain reaction assays for the detection of Brucella spp. in clinical samples from dogs

    Aim: This study aimed to compare the sensitivity (S), specificity (Sp), and positive likelihood ratios (LR+) of four polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays for the detection of Brucella spp. in dog's clinical samples. Materials and Methods: A total of 595 samples of whole blood, urine, and genital fluids were evaluated between October 2014 and November 2016. To compare PCR assays, the gold standard was defined using a combination of different serological and microbiological test. Bacterial isolation from urine and blood cultures was carried out. Serological methods such as rapid slide agglutination test, indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, agar gel immunodiffusion test, and buffered plate antigen test were performed. Four genes were evaluated: (i) The gene coding for the BCSP31 protein, (ii) the ribosomal gene coding for the 16S-23S intergenic spacer region, (iii) the gene coding for porins omp2a/omp2b, and (iv) the gene coding for the insertion sequence IS711. Results: The results obtained were as follows: (1) For the primers that amplify the gene coding for the BCSP31 protein: S: 45.64% (confidence interval [CI] 39.81-51.46), Sp: 95.62% (CI 93.13-98.12), and LR+: 10.43 (CI 6.04-18); (2) for the primers that amplify the ribosomal gene of the 16S-23S rDNA intergenic spacer region: S: 69.80% (CI 64.42-75.18), Sp: 95.62 % (CI 93.13-98.12), and LR+: 11.52 (CI 7.31-18.13); (3) for the primers that amplify the omp2a and omp2b genes: S: 39.26% (CI 33.55-44.97), Sp: 97.31% (CI 95.30-99.32), and LR+ 14.58 (CI 7.25-29.29); and (4) for the primers that amplify the insertion sequence IS711: S: 22.82% (CI 17.89 - 27.75), Sp: 99.66% (CI 98.84-100), and LR+ 67.77 (CI 9.47-484.89). Conclusion: We concluded that the gene coding for the 16S-23S rDNA intergenic spacer region was the one that best detected Brucella spp. in canine clinical samples

    Analytical techniques for the characterisation of historical building materials. Case study "Casa di Diana" mithraeum (archeological site in Ostia Antica, Italy)

    Nowadays, a broad range of analytical techniques are available and applied in the preservation of cultural heritage. However, to characterise the historical materials and to obtain quantitative and qualitative information of their composition and structure, it is necessary to choose the appropriate analytical instruments. In fact, for each study, analytical aim and nature of the analysed materials, it is necessary to combine the scientific and technological knowledge of the devise used in order to define an adequate plan of action. In the field of cultural heritage conservation, destructive techniques should be avoided, wherever possible, to preserve the integrity of the historical buildings. Therefore, the development of non-invasive, non-destructive and in-situ analysis is extremely important. Taking all of this into account, this chapter contains the main advantages of the more useful selected analytical techniques to characterise ancient building materials, taking into consideration a particular case study: a roman masonry, dated 130 a. C., found in the Ostia Antica archaeological site. Specifically we will deal with bricks and mortars, the wall building materials of the “Casa di Diana” Mithraeum. The combined use of techniques such as polarized microscope, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy and, X-ray fluorescence (XRF) allow us to extract information in terms of phase identification, quantification of crystalline compounds and complex poly-phasic mixtures (solid solutions), identification of deterioration products and determine their nature. In this way, it is possible to analyse the complete life-cycle of the manufacturing processes, starting from the raw materials, through to the man-made production and constructive techniques evolution. Moreover, the obtained results enable us to study the forms of degradation, as well as to choose and apply a suitable procedure for the preservation and safeguard of the materials taken into consideration

    Technology-assisted behavioral intervention to encourage prehabilitation in frail older adults undergoing surgery: Development and design of the BeFitMe™ Apple Watch app

    Objective: Increasing the physical activity of frail, older patients before surgery through prehabilitation (prehab) can hasten return to autonomy and reduce complications postoperatively. However, prehab participation is low in the clinical setting. In this study, we re-design an existing prehab smartphone application (BeFitMe™) using a novel standalone Apple Watch platform to increase accessibility and usability for vulnerable patients. Methods: Design Science Research Methodology was used to (1) develop an approach to clinical research using standalone Apple Watches, (2) re-design BeFitMe™ for the Apple Watch platform, and (3) incorporate user feedback into app design. In phase 3, beta and user testers gave feedback via a follow-up phone call. Exercise data was extracted from the watch after testing. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize accessibility and usability. Results: BeFitMe™ was redesigned for the Apple Watch with full functionality without requiring patients to have an iPhone or internet connectivity and the ability to passively collect exercise data without patient interaction. Three study staff participated in beta testing over 3 weeks. Six randomly chosen thoracic surgery patients participated in user testing over 12 weeks. Feedback from beta and user testers was addressed with updated software (versions 1.0-1.10), improved interface and notification schemes, and the development of educational materials used during enrollment. The majority of users (5/6, 83%) participated by responding to at least one notification and data was able to be collected for 54/82 (68%) of the days users had the watches. The amount of data collected in BeFitMe™ Watch app increased from 2/11 (16%) days with the first patient tester to 13/13 (100%) days with the final patient tester. Conclusions: The BeFitMe™ Watch app is accessible and usable. The BeFitMe™ Watch app may help older patients, particularly those from vulnerable backgrounds with fewer resources, participate in prehab prior to surgery.</p
