    Tears in Heaven: Religiously and Culturally Sensitive Laws for Preventing the Next Pandemic

    This Article argues that laws created to curtail the spread of deadly contagious diseases need to be drafted and implemented in ways that maximize acceptance of an affected communities’ cultural and religious beliefs. When laws are put in place that are inconsistent with community mores, the overall goal of stopping an epidemic is threatened. Communities often distrust government and other relief organizations who mandate rules and regulations that impinge their religious and cultural beliefs; thus, these regulations geared at helping communities can paradoxically undermine the goal of preventing the spread of infectious disease. This Article focuses on the need for public health officials to accommodate the religious and cultural practices of communities impacted by serious health epidemics when developing effective emergency procedures. The authors explores the role of governmental authorities in preventing the spread of contagious diseases during public health emergencies by reviewing constitutional, state, and international laws and regulations that may apply during infectious disease threats. It also addresses how religious and cultural practices should be accommodated in light of the West Africa Ebola crisis and the Sin Nombre outbreak in the United States. It describes survivors’ legal rights regarding human remains and the importance of religious and cultural death rituals. Further, this Article sets forth a proposal, taking into account ethical and policy considerations, and ultimately proposes an interdisciplinary and proactive approach to development of laws and regulations to create a system that is adaptable, acceptable to the community, and scientifically sound

    Parent involvement is an integral part of a child’s educational progress. In some cases, students’ academic achievement can be directly related to the level of parental involvement exhibited in schools. Families’ perception of roles toward parental involvement in schools may vary among groups from diverse cultures. In today’s urban schools, the increasing diversity of cultures may contribute to differences in levels of parental involvement. The purpose of this research is to address the need to promote parental participation in the educational process of their children. This study will focus on three research questions: Are there differences in levels of parental involvement after participating in a program designed to assist them with their children’s reading skills? Are there changes in the attitudes of families towards parental involvement after participating in the instructional cycle? Is there a relationship between the level of parental involvement and student academic achievement

    Bicyclic Peptide Based Lectinomimic

    Peptide based lectin mimetics represent an attractive approach for the development of artificial carbohydrate receptors that might find application in bio-analytical and medicinal fields. Taking into consideration the structure of typical lectin binding site, we have designed a novel artificial receptor molecule possessing a rigid three-dimensional structure, hydrogen-bonding site and lipophilic binding pocket to promote hydrophobic interaction and hydrogen-bonding. A new solid- phase synthetic approach that allows complete synthesis of desired bicyclic peptide 1 on the solid support was developed. CD spectra of peptides 1 and 2 indicate that the structure of 1 is rather rigid and preorganised for the three-dimensional monosaccharide substrates binding. The binding affinities of bicyclic peptide receptor 1 toward various carbohydrate substrates at physiologically relevant conditions were estimated by UV/vis and fluorimetric titration experiments, and the observed values are in the millimolar range. With these results we have demonstrated that the bicyclic peptide 1 represent a promising basis for the design of new and more efficient carbohydrate receptors that may have broader application in bio-analytical or medicinal field

    The effect of non-traditional cooling on dog sperm cryosurvival and ability to perform the acrosome reaction

    The objective of this study was to assess cryosurvival, plasma membrane fluidity, and capability of cryopreserved dog (Canis lupus familiaris) spermatozoa, cooled to –5 °C before freezing, to perform the acrosome reaction under the effect of progesterone and calcium ionophore. In the first experiment, fresh spermatozoa diluted in Tyrode’s medium plus albumin, lactate, and pyruvate (TALP) were incubated at 38 °C in 5% CO2 in air, with progesterone or calcium ionophore added at 2, 4, and 6 h after incubation and sampled 30 min later to assess the acrosome reaction. In the second experiment, diluted sperm were packaged in plastic straws, cooled to either +5 °C or –5 °C and cryopreserved. Progressive motility, plasma membrane integrity and fluidity, capacitation status and acrosome integrity were assessed before and after freeze-thawing. After thawing, sperm were assessed, resuspended in TALP and incubated to assess the acrosome reaction. Parameters for sperm cryosurvival were similar in sperm cooled to either +5 °C or –5 °C, except in the percentage of hyper-fluid membranes which was lower (P<0.05) in sperm cooled to –5 °C. There were no differences in the percentages of frozen-thawed spermatozoa with acrosome reaction, induced by progesterone or calcium ionophore, between cooling treatments. In conclusion, cooling of dog spermatozoa to –5 °C did not improve sperm cryosurvival but had a positive effect on plasma membrane fluidity

However, PQ repair is difficult when using conventional approach, which is necessary to release PQ for volar plate fixation of distal radius fracture. In addition, anatomical reduction is difficult in patients with distal radius metaphyseal comminution fracture. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to compare the results of volar locking plate fixation using PQ sparing technique and conventional volar approach technique for patients with distal radius metaphyseal comminution fracture

    Solar Concentrators Manufacture and Automation

    Solar energy is one of the most promising types of renewable energy. Flat facet solar concentrators were proposed to decrease the cost of materials needed for production. They used small flat mirrors for approximation of parabolic dish surface. The first prototype of flat facet solar concentrators was made in Australia in 1982. Later various prototypes of flat facet solar concentrators were proposed. It was shown that the cost of materials for these prototypes is much lower than the material cost of conventional parabolic dish solar concentrators. To obtain the overall low cost of flat facet concentrators it is necessary to develop fully automated technology of manufacturing and assembling processes. Unfortunately, the design of known flat facet concentrators is too complex for automation process. At present we develop the automatic manufacturing and assembling system for flat facet solar concentrators. For this purpose, we propose the design of flat facet solar concentrator that is convenient for automatization. We describe this design in the paper. At present, almost all solar-energy plants in the world occupy specific areas that are not used for agricultural production. This leads to a competition between the solar-energy plants and agriculture production systems. To avoid this competition, it is possible to co-locate solar-energy devices in agricultural fields. The energy obtained via such co-location can be used for agricultural needs (e.g., water extraction for irrigation) and other purposes (e.g., sent to an electrical grid). In this study, we also describe the results of an investigation on co-location methods for the minimal loss of agricultural harvest too

    Sacral agenesis: a pilot whole exome sequencing and copy number study

    Background: Caudal regression syndrome (CRS) or sacral agenesis is a rare congenital disorder characterized by a constellation of congenital caudal anomalies affecting the caudal spine and spinal cord, the hindgut, the urogenital system, and the lower limbs. CRS is a complex condition, attributed to an abnormal development of the caudal mesoderm, likely caused by the effect of interacting genetic and environmental factors. A well-known risk factor is maternal type 1 diabetes. Method: Whole exome sequencing and copy number variation (CNV) analyses were conducted on 4 Caucasian trios to identify de novo and inherited rare mutations. Results: In this pilot study, exome sequencing and copy number variation (CNV) analyses implicate a number of candidate genes, including SPTBN5, MORN1, ZNF330, CLTCL1 and PDZD2. De novo mutations were found in SPTBN5, MORN1 and ZNF330 and inherited predicted damaging mutations in PDZD2 (homozygous) and CLTCL1 (compound heterozygous). Importantly, predicted damaging mutations in PTEN (heterozygous), in its direct regulator GLTSCR2 (compound heterozygous) and in VANGL1 (heterozygous) were identified. These genes had previously been linked with the CRS phenotype. Two CNV deletions, one de novo (chr3q13.13) and one homozygous (chr8p23.2), were detected in one of our CRS patients. These deletions overlapped with CNVs previously reported in patients with similar phenotype. Conclusion: Despite the genetic diversity and the complexity of the phenotype, this pilot study identified genetic features common across CRS patients
