In Rome urban area, within the garden dedicated
to Ytzhak Rabin (a portion of the Villa Ada park),
occurrence of a few collapses has been observed for the first
time in September 2012. In the surroundings, presence of
underground cavities- mainly catacombs- is conversely well
documented by previous studies.
Local authorities were immediately informed of sinkholes
formation, because collapses occurred very close to a
playground located in a highly frequented sector of the garden.
Propagation processes of the phenomena, periodically
monitored since their first observation, significantly fastened
after a period of heavy rainfalls on Rome area in January-
February 2014. Thus, multidisciplinary geophysical
investigations have been started in agreement with Civil
Protection of Rome Municipality, who has taken preliminary
safety measures (installation of fences and danger signals).
Hitherto, 28 sinkholes have been identified, aligned along a
WNW-ESE trending zone, testifying localized collapses of the
roof of underground cavities, probably belonging to the
palaeocristian catacomb systems dug nearby Via Salaria.
Preliminary geophysical prospections have been performed in
a small test area, in order to verify methods applicability and
thus program a systematic survey of the whole garden.
Drillings, and direct exploration of the accessible galleries, will
complete the reconstruction of underground geometry and
conservation state of vaults and pillars. Once completed the
hazard assessment, the planning of urgent works is expected
in order to restore the complete use of the garden.Published25 - 422TR. Ricostruzione e modellazione della struttura crostaleN/A or not JC
The Plio-Quaternary Acque Albule Basin is already
known for the occurrence of sinkholes; since the
spring 2014, it has been ongoing the study of an active subsidence
process, which formed a depressed area near the
Guidonia village. During the last year, the phenomenon has
become more intense giving rise to two collapses along the
eastern rim of the depression. Thus, geophysical and geogeochemical
investigation campaigns started in order to understand
the genesis and evolution of the phenomenon. Survey
results allowed a geological and structural characterization,
showing the presence of âtravertinoâ at the depression margins
and its absence therein. It has been recognized, by the
geophysics, features with NW-SE and NNE-SSW direction
ascribable to a possible depression fracturing and consistent
with regional structural trends. Thus, it has been possible to
plan and perform geognostic investigation consisting in two
drillings aimed to define the stratigraphy of the marginal and
inner part of the depression.Published7 - 162TR. Ricostruzione e modellazione della struttura crostaleJCR Journa
Geophysical surveys integrated in the "Il Piano" area (Isola d'Elba, Italy) to goal census and cataloging cavities anthropic origin
Systematic analyses of the tectonic structures of the Plio-Pleistocene units and MesoCenozoic deposits of the Acque Albule Basin, 1Okm East of Rome between Mount Soratte, Cornicolani Mts. and Lucretili Mts. in central Italy, show a complex tectonic framework. A gravity survey was carried out to identify the geological and structural features of the basin. Gravity anomalies have been used for the construction of a 3D model of the area, and gravity data for the construction of Bouguer and residual anomaly maps. These data, together with geological surface data, allowed for the understanding of the Plio-quaternary tectonic setting of the basin. The trend of anomalies, around the two relative gravity lows. Here, two relative gravity lows are separated by a wide saddle, located near the Casale Battisti (Guidonia).
This plain are characterized by the presence of some collapse phenomena of different types and/or origins. The majority of these collapses are aligned along regional master and seismogenetic faults.
Over the last 1O years several collapse phenomena risk area have been detected by micro- gravity survey in Acque Albule plain areas. In this paper only Lago delle Tartare is considered. Both microgravity and seismic tomography data have been proposed in order to better under- stand the underground geological features of the morphological depression.Published501-5084T. The Roman Amphitheatre in Durazzo (Durres): geophysical surveys and archaeological emergences
In this work we characterize the microgravity and seismic response of archaeological remains of Roman Amphitheater of Durres situated on the Adriatic coast in Albania. Geophysical methods have proven to very useful to archaeologists in order to detect, map and study the characteristics of different types of objects and structures in the subsurface. These methods allow the evaluation of their conservation state, the identification of different construction phases and zones disturbed by agricultural activities or plundering. Moreover the investigation of geological deposits and buried landforms is useful for generating paleo-environmental information. The surveys indicate the presence of walls of various sizes and width having different preservation states and series of underground tunnels used to house animals and slaves as construction of the Colosseum. Structures sizes are comparable to those of medium size in the other amphitheatres found in the Mediterranean basin.
Our study focused on southern sector of the site. Archaeological excavations were carried out at this area, with only one house being dug in each sector. The archaeological excavations carried out in this sector show evidence the comparison between the seismic and gravity data. According to the historical investigations, these sectors should correspond to settlers houses, but there is no information about the internal organization of the houses and their occupation before the abandonment of the colony. The building ended to be used for entertainment in the early Middle age. It was later reused for such purposes as housing, workshops, quarters for religious order, a fortress, a quarry, and a Byzantine shirne.Published33- 513SR. AMBIENTE - Servizi e ricerca per la Societ
Contribution of integrated geophysical survey to the archaeological investigation of the âVilla degli Antoniniâ
During geophysical investigations (2010-
2011) at the archaeological site of the âVilla degli
Antoniniâ in Genzano di Roma (RM, Italy), detection
and location of underground buried structures using
different instruments and techniques were carried
out. In this paper we describe the results of an
investigation obtained with integrated geophysical
survey techniques: electromagnetic induction (EMI),
magnetometry (MAG) and ground penetrating radar
(GPR).
Magnetometry and electromagnetic induction
measurements revealed an elliptical depression with a
N/NEâS/SW orientation (major axis ca. 50 m, minor
axis ca. 25 m). On the basis of these results, GPR
measurements were taken to enhance the
characterization of smaller and more deeply buried
features in order to obtain a more detailed picture of
the underground structures.
Excavation in targeted areas showed that the elliptical
structure is an amphitheatre, possibly the one where,
according to the ancient sources, the Roman emperor
Commodus (ruled 180-192) earned the nickname
âRoman Herculesâ.Published545-5491VV. AltroJCR Journa
Published83-917A. Geofisica per il monitoraggio ambientale e geologia medica3SR. AMBIENTE - Servizi e ricerca per la SocietĂ 1VV. Altr
