    Exploding Wire as a Light Source in Flash Photolysis

    The exploding wire technique has been developed for use as a light source in flash photolysis. The method consists of discharging a bank of condensers, via a mechanical switch through a thin Nichrome wire. The wire explodes, emitting light rich in the ultraviolet region in less than a millisecond. The luminous efficiency in the 200 to 330 mµ region is of the order of 10% of the input. The minimum electrical energy input necessary to produce an explosion is equal to the energy required to vaporize the wire. The light output of the exploding wire as measured by uranyl oxalate actinometry and acetone photolysis is proportional to the electrical energy input. It was found to be highly reproducible. It was further observed that the exploding wire behaves as a line source. Because of the absence of a quartz or Pyrex tube in this source, it may find application in the far as well as in the near ultraviolet and in the visible spectral regions

    Three-isotope plot of fractionation in photolysis: A perturbation theoretical expression

    The slope of the three-isotope plot for the isotopomer fractionation by direct or nearly direct photodissociation is obtained using a perturbation theoretical analysis. This result, correct to first order in the mass difference, is the same as that for equilibrium chemical exchange reactions, a similarity unexpected a priori. A comparison is made with computational results for N2O photodissociation. This theoretical slope for mass-dependent photolytic fractionation can be used to analyze the data for isotopic anomalies in spin-allowed photodissociation reactions.     Photochemical Studies in Flash Photolysis. I. Photolysis of Acetone

    The high-intensity flash photolysis of acetone was investigated using an exploding wire as a light source. Experiments were conducted with the unfiltered light of the flash, containing light in the near as well as in the far ultraviolet region of the spectrum. The results show that the C2H6/CO ratio in the reaction products is about 1.25 and is fairly insensitive to variation in acetone pressure. Addition of small amounts of biacetyl lowers the ratio still further. This is attributed to the deactivation of a long-lived excited acetone molecule formed in the ultraviolet region below 210 mµ. Addition of butane lowers the ratio far below unity. The CH4/CO ratio has the constant value of 0.1 for various light intensities, acetone pressures, pressures of added butane or of carbon dioxide. A convenient way of separating small amounts of ethane from very large amounts of carbon dioxide is described

    Towards Developing an Online Social Media-based Mobile Learning System

    The advancement of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and the Internet revolution gave rise to the several learning technologies on the web and mobile platform. During the last decade, the social media network became available for users to socialise and collaborate among peer group. Hence, The integration of e-learning and social media using mobile device as access point is to allow for learning and collaboration anytime, anywhere. This study seeks to provide learning on the social network platform for users to view the application on a mobile device and also foster collaboration among scholars. The system was developed using an open source Content Management System (CMS) Wordpress and Buddypress running on a WAMP or XAMPP server. MySQL was used as database. The usability of the System on the different mobile devices used was evaluated by identifying the usability attributes; designing a questionnaire based on those attributes and then analyzing the results with Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS). The results showed that the learning system had a good usability score on mobile device

    We give general sufficient conditions for the existence of trapped surfaces due to concentration of matter in spherically symmetric initial data sets satisfying the dominant energy condition. These results are novel in that they apply and are meaningful for arbitrary spacelike slices, that is they do not require any auxiliary assumptions such as maximality, time-symmetry, or special extrinsic foliations, and most importantly they can easily be generalized to the nonspherical case once an existence theory for a modified version of the Jang equation is developed. Moreover, our methods also yield positivity and monotonicity properties of the Misner-Sharp energy

    Coulomb Oscillations in Antidots in the Integer and Fractional Quantum Hall Regimes

    We report measurements of resistance oscillations in micron-scale antidots in both the integer and fractional quantum Hall regimes. In the integer regime, we conclude that oscillations are of the Coulomb type from the scaling of magnetic field period with the number of edges bound to the antidot. Based on both gate-voltage and field periods, we find at filling factor {\nu} = 2 a tunneling charge of e and two charged edges. Generalizing this picture to the fractional regime, we find (again, based on field and gate-voltage periods) at {\nu} = 2/3 a tunneling charge of (2/3)e and a single charged edge.Comment: related papers at http://marcuslab.harvard.ed

    Purification of genuine multipartite entanglement

    In tasks, where multipartite entanglement plays a central role, state purification is, due to inevitable noise, a crucial part of the procedure. We consider a scenario exploiting the multipartite entanglement in a straightforward multipartite purification algorithm and compare it to bipartite purification procedures combined with state teleportation. While complete purification requires an infinite amount of input states in both cases, we show that for an imperfect output fidelity the multipartite procedure exhibits a major advantage in terms of input states used.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure

    Optical fibre sensors for monitoring prestressed concrete structures in nuclear power plants

    This thesis was previously held under moratorium from 20th November and 20th November 2015.Lifetime extensions of nuclear fission reactors in the UK are required to satisfy growing demands for electrical power. Many of these reactors are nearing the end of their original design life, so the continued structural integrity, particularly of the reactors' prestressed concrete pressure vessels and containments is of prime concern. Currently, a lift-off inspection of a 1 % random sample of prestressing tendons is performed at 18 month to 5 year intervals to ensure adequate prestress is present in these structures, but the extended life times are making higher resolution, more frequent and in-depth monitoring techniques more desirable. In this thesis, a method of instrumenting prestressing strands with optical fibre Bragg grating strain sensors is outlined. An all-metal encapsulation and bonding technique is developed to ensure sensor reliability under the radioactive and high-stress environments of fission reactors. This 'smart strand' is complemented by a specially developed interrogation scheme capable of continuously and automatically monitoring static and dynamic nanoscale changes in Bragg grating strain. High-resolution interrogation was achieved by extending an interferrometric demodulation technique into the static measurement regime. By modulating the strain sensitivity using a fast optical switch, strain signals could be recovered independently of noise sources using various signal processing algorithms.     In order to assess software architecture visualisation strategies, we qualitatively characterize then construct an assessment framework with 7 key areas and 31 features. The framework is used for evaluation and comparison of various strategies from multiple stakeholder perspectives. Six existing software architecture visualisation tools and a seventh research tool were evaluated. All tools exhibited shortcomings when evaluated in the framework
