    New ideas on prospective low energy threshold detectors for dark matter searches

    Low energy threshold detectors are necessary in many frontier fields of experimental physics. In particular, these are extremely important for probing possible dark matter (DM) candidates. We present a novel detection approach that exploits the energy levels of atoms maintained at cryogenic temperature. We exploit laser-assisted transitions that are triggered by the absorption of the incident particle in the material and lead to the emission of a fluorescent photon or an electron. In this approach, the incident particle will in fact excite the first low-lying energy level that is then up-converted using an opportune narrow-band laser system. Two different detection schemes are thus possible in our active material: one is based on a photon signal while the other takes advantage of high efficiency in-vacuum charge detection

    A New Active Shoulder Prosthesis: from the Design to the First Clinical Application

    INAIL and DIEM prototyped a new externally-powered prosthetic shoulder developed for interscapulothoracic and first-proximal trans-humeral amputees. The articulation consist of two connected powered joints that allow the elevation of the upper arm in any vertical plane passing through the shoulder centre of rotation. The development of the mechanism is the result of a rigorous approach, which made it possible to systematically combine both the technical and the clinical aspects involved in the design of a prosthetic device. The prototype underwent laboratory tests needed to evaluate the mechanism’s performance (e.g. the maximum payload) and the electrical requirements (e.g. the current draining). Based also on the results retrieved from these tests, an on-board embedded controller was implemented. The electronic unit can control a prosthesis with up to five powered joints and can manage different control strategies, according to the amputees’ preferences. The prototype with the embedded control system has been recently integrated within the prosthesis, provided with hand, wrist and elbow, of a proximal trans-humeral amputee who firstly tested the new device. This paper provides an overview of the development of the actual prosthesis, reports the main patient’s feedback and outlines the future developments

    Physical active lifestyle promotes static and dynamic balance performance in young and older adults

    Although regular physical activity exposure leads to positive postural balance control (PBC) adaptations, few studies investigated its effects, or the one of inactivity, on PBC in populations of different age groups. Thus, this study investigated the impact of a physically active lifestyle on static and dynamic PBC in young and older adults. Thirty-five young physically active subjects (YA), 20 young sedentary subjects (YS), 16 physically active older adults (OA), and 15 sedentary older adults (OS) underwent a static and a dynamic PBC assessment. A force platform and an instrumented proprioceptive board were employed to measure the center of pressure (COP) trajectory and the anteroposterior oscillations, respectively. In static conditions, no significant differences were detected among groups considering the overall postural balance performance represented by the area of confidence ellipse values. Conversely, the YA highlighted a higher efficiency (i.e., lower sway path mean velocity) in PBC maintenance compared to the other groups (YA vs OA: p = 0.0057, Cohen's d = 0.94; YA vs OS p = 0.043, d = 1.07; YA vs YS p = 0.08, d = 0.67). OS exhibited an overall worse performance in dynamic conditions than YA and YS. Surprisingly, no differences were found between YS and OA for all the static and dynamic parameters considered. In conclusion, our results suggest that a physically active lifestyle may promote static and dynamic balance performance in young and older adults, thus with potentially positive effects on the age-related decline of postural balance performance. Dynamic PBC assessment seems more sensitive in detecting differences between groups than the static evaluation

    We present an experimental apparatus to investigate electron transport and thermalization in cryogenic para-hydrogen crystal matrices. This paper describes the techniques used to grow and characterize the cryogenic para-hydrogen crystals, the optical system employed to photoextract electrons, and the charge collection system used to study the behavior of electrons within the solid matrix. By probing the fundamental charge transport and energy loss processes in a quantum solid, such as para-hydrogen, this study paves the way for future precision experiments that leverage the unique properties of cryogenic crystal matrices

    Acute toxic exposures in childhood are quite a frequent event in Paediatric Emergency Medicine. Despite that, there are few papers about clinical toxicology in children, at least in Italy. This paper is the first that takes into account both epidemiological aspects and clinical features of acute poisoning in children on a national basis. Collected data show the increased use of activated charcoal as a treatment and the use of the short stay observation unit as an appropriate answer to the real clinical situation, although some aspects are still controversial. It will be necessary to reconsider the whole matter widening the number of participating centres, so that the most controversial aspects may be clarified
