The paper discusses the place of Africa in the context of North-South. It shows new criteria of North-South regionalization (quality of life understood both in socio-economic and political sense) and argues that Mauritius is the only African state belonging to the global North. Nevertheless the paper shows also differences and contrasts in level of economic and socio-economic development in African as part of the global South, arguing that some of them are very visible, even more than Brandt line

The article analyzes Polish borders, territory and geopolitical position during the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Republics, including communist period. It argues that the most coherent territorially is Poland in the post-war borders. From a political-geographical perspective it assesses the contemporary western Polish border positively, and the eastern border negatively. It draws attention to the importance of the degree of integration of the international environment around Poland for its security and sovereignty, arguing that so far it has been better for Poland to have more neighbors than less.W artykule przeprowadzono analiz臋 kszta艂tu polskich granic i terytorium pa艅stwa dla okres贸w Rzeczpospolitej szlacheckej, II RP z okresu mi臋dzywojenego, Polski ludowej oraz wsp贸艂czesnej, a tak偶e ocen臋 po艂o偶enia geopolitycznego. Village names as a source of knowledge of the past: toponyms in the Olszynka Valley in the Ci臋偶kowickie Foothills

The Olszynka valley is located in the Ci臋偶kowicke Foothills on the border of the Lesser Poland voivodeship (district of Tarn贸w) and Subcarpathian voivodeship (district of Jas艂o). In the early Middle Ages this area was located on the borders of the Kingdom of Poland and only since the mid-14th century with the seizure of Red Ruthenia by king Casimir the Great 聽t became the subject of intense settlement colonization. In the Olszynka valley there are located several villages with names very meaningful in the context of the past of the local environment and local communities. The names of villages concentrated at the mouth of the valley are rather related to human activity and culture (Siepietnica, 艢wi臋cany), while in the upper part of the valley they generally refer to the characteristics of the natural environment existing there in 14th century (Szerzyny, O艂piny, Olszyny, 呕urowa, Czermna). This situation could be explained by the chronology of the settlement processes. Especially intriguing in this area are such toponyms as Siepietnica (name derived from the profession performed by the local population in the days preceding the 14th-century colonization), O艂piny and 呕urowa (indicating certain features of the natural environment in the 14th century and at the same time presence of some German settlers) and Czermna (related not only to some features of the local environment but also to the Ruthenian origin of its owners in the 2nd half of the 14th century).Dolina Olszynki po艂o偶ona jest w granicach Pog贸rza Ci臋偶kowickiego na pograniczu wojew贸dztwa ma艂opolskiego (powiat tarnowski) i podkarpackiego (powiat jasielski). We wczesnym 艣redniowieczu obszar ten znajdowa艂 si臋 na rubie偶ach pa艅stwach polskiego i dopiero od po艂owy wieku XIV wraz z przy艂膮czeniem do Kr贸lestwa Polskiego Rusi Czerwonej sta艂 si臋 miejscem intensywnej akcji osadniczej. W granicach doliny Olszynki (dop艂yw Ropy) znajduje si臋 kilka wsi o nazwach wiele m贸wi膮cych o przesz艂o艣ci miejscowego 艣rodowiska przyrodniczego i spo艂eczno艣ci lokalnych. Nazwy miejscowo艣ci w dolnym biegu rzeki zwi膮zane s膮 raczej z cz艂owiekiem, z jego dzia艂alno艣ci膮 i kultur膮 (Siepietnica, 艢wi臋cany), podczas gdy w 艣rednim i g贸rnym z regu艂y odwo艂uj膮 si臋 do cech 艣rodowiska przyrodniczego istniej膮cych w chwili lokacji osad (Szerzyny, O艂piny, Olszyny, 呕urowa, Czermna). Sytuacj臋 t臋 mo偶na t艂umaczy膰 chronologi膮 proces贸w osadniczych.
