Effects of maturity on nutritive value of field-cured hays from common vetch and hairy vetch
Hay samples from common vetch and hairy vetch were collected at three maturity
stages (bloom and two stages during pod-filling) with the aims of assessing the
optimum harvesting stage and comparing the nutritive value of the two species.
As maturation progressed, the hay content in cell wall increased and that of CP
decreased. The two species showed different patterns in line with the maturing
process, regarding digestibility of nutrients and effective degradability of DM
and CP. Common vetch hay showed a progressive decrease of digestibility and
degradability values in line with the maturing process of vegetative structures.
Hairy vetch hay, however, showed a compensatory effect produced by an increasing
grain proportion at later maturity stages. The nutritive value at flowering was
higher for common vetch hay than for hairy vetch hay, but the opposite was
observed at the stage of mature legumes. Voluntary DM intake was not affected
by the species or harvest stages. Degradation studies, carried out by the nylon
bag technique, showed that in these hays CP was extensively rumen degraded.
Consequently, their digestible bypass protein should be low.
Nutritive value of on-farm common vetch-oat hays. II. Ruminal degradability of dry matter and crude protein
Rumen degradation characteristics and effective degradability (ED) of dry matter
(DM) and crude protein (CP) of 11 samples of common vetch-oat hay were determined
using the nylon bag technique in three rumen fistulated wethers. Animals were fed
at an intake level of 40 g DMkgBW with a mixed diet of vetch-oat hay and
concentrate (2:1 on DM). Mean values of ED of DM and CP, calculated for rumen
outflow rates determined in each sheep, presented a moderate variation
(mean = 65.8% ; CV = 7.9% for DM and mean = 79.3% ; CV = 4.7% for CP).
Vetch proportion in hay was positively correlated with ED of DM (r = 0.412; )
and ED of CP (r = 0.583; ). Predictive equations of ED from chemical
composition were obtained using the step wise procedure. The contents of neutral
detergent fibre and acid detergent lignin explained 79.4% of the total variation
of ED of DM. The best prediction of ED of CP was obtained with the concentration
of cellulose as an independent variable (r = 0.839). Degradation studies in these
hays also indicated that the content of bypass protein, potentially digestible in
the small intestine, was low. Thus, most N available to animals was derived from
rumen microbial synthesis.
positivement reliée avec la DT de la MS (r = 0,412 ; ) et des MAT (r = 0,583 ;
In situ evaluation of the protein value of soybean meal and processed full fat soybeans for ruminants
The rumen degradation and the intestinal digestion of dry matter (DM)
and crude protein (CP) of different samples of soybean meal (SBM)
and full-fat soybean (FFS) were determined using in situ techniques.
Rumen effective degradability (ED) was determined in three rumen
fistulated wethers on nine SBM samples, obtained by solvent extraction
(SBM1 to 8) and by expelling (SBM9), and on five FFS samples, treated
by extrusion (FFS1 to 4) and by toasting (FFS5). Intestinal digestibility
(ID) in the original feed and in the feed residues after rumen incubation
for 8 and 24 h was determined in three duodenal fistulated wethers for
three samples of SBM (6, 8 and 9) and two samples of FFS (2 and 3).
No differences () were observed between the mean values
of SBM and FFS for the degradation kinetic parameters and the ED
of both DM and CP. On the contrary, differences were found within
each feed category. The ED of CP of SBM9 (46.1%) was lower than
that of all solvent extracted meals, which ranged from 55.8 to
67.0%. The ED of CP for FFS5 (toasted) was equal to the minimum
value of the range of the extruded samples (57.3 to 71.3%). The ED
of CP was more closely correlated with the variation of the degradation
rate () (; ) than with the soluble () or the
potentially degradable () fractions ( and -0.68,
respectively; ). On the other hand, the degradation
parameters of DM and CP were closely correlated (,
0.92, 0.81 and 0.79 for ED, , and , respectively;
). The effects of rumen pre-incubation time on
the ID of CP, only recorded for three samples, were variable
and relatively small in magnitude. The mean values of the ID
of CP were similar among samples (from 95.9 to 97.6%). The protein
value of soybean products is mainly determined by the ED of CP,
since the increases of by-pass digestible protein, associated with
its reduction, largely exceed the reductions in the microbial protein
synthesis caused by the decreased feed degradability.
Nutritive value of on-farm vetch-oat hays. I. Voluntary intake and nutrient digestibility
Forage hay from the common vetch-oat intercrop has the potential to meet the
forage deficit and integrate crop and livestock production in Mediterranean
cereal-sheep systems. Groups of three wethers (1-2 year-old) were randomly
allocated to individual on-farm hays of a sample size of 12 with the aim of
assessing variability of botanical and chemical fractions, digestibility of
nutrients, and DM intake. Vetch content (gkg DM) of hays (mean value = 557)
ranged from 125 to 917. Mean contents (gkg DM) of crude protein (CP),
neutral detergent fibre (NDF) and acid detergent lignin (ADL) were 126, 486,
and 45 respectively. Variations of chemical composition between hays, and
especially those of CP and ADL were partially explained by vetch proportion.
Voluntary intake (g DMkgBW) had a mean value of 64.2 and ranged from
49.0 to 78.9. Organic matter digestibility (mean value = 68.8% ) ranged from
59.9 to 72.6% . The digestibility coefficient of nutrients and voluntary intake
showed lower variability than that of chemical fractions, which, in turn, had a
lower variability than that of botanical composition. The mean digestible
energy (DE) concentration of the study sample was 11.72 MJ DEkg DM. Low
variability of this value (CV = 5.9% ) indicated a compensatory effect between
vetch and oat. Vetch proportion in hay gave a better explanation of the variation
of CP intake (r = 0.63) than of the variation of DE intake (r = 0.37).

production objective. This criterion may contribute to standardisation and
marketing operations at the farm level. I. Quantités ingérées et
L'ingestibilité (g MSkgP) a
In situ evaluation of the protein value of soybean meal and processed full fat soybeans for ruminants
Rumen degradability and intestinal digestibility of coconut meal
Effective rumen degradability (ED) and intestinal digestibility (ID) of dry matter (DM)
and crude protein (CP) of an expelling coconut meal sample were determined using in situ
techniques. Degradation of coconut meal was characterised by long lag times and slow
degradation rates for both DM and CP. Consequently, ED values were also low (51 and
36.5% , respectively). Values of ID of DM were reduced with the rumen incubation time
from 81.6% (original feed) to 50.3% (48 h). On the contrary, ID of CP was constant
(91.3% on average). Therefore, a content of 58% of rumen-undegraded digestible CP
can be estimated for this sample. The apparent disagreement between the high values
of both ID of CP and insoluble nitrogen in neutral detergent solution (70.5% of
Relationship between ruminal degradability and chemical composition of dehydrated lucerne
The rumen degradation characteristics and effective degradability (ED)
of dry matter (DM) and crude protein (CP) of 21 samples of dehydrated
lucerne from 5 different processing plants were studied in three rumen
fistulated wethers using the nylon bag technique. The animals were fed
at an intake level of 40 g DMkg BW0.75 with a mixed diet of lucerne
(40% dehydrated and 60% hay) and concentrate (2:1 on DM). The mean values
of the ED of DM and CP, calculated for rumen outflow rates determined
in each animal (2.28%h, as average), presented a low variation
(mean = 61.2%; CV = 5.31% for DM and mean = 73.5%; CV = 4.95% for CP).
Degradation of DM was directly related to lucerne quality,
with negative and positive correlations with the contents of
fibre and CP, respectively. The best prediction of the ED of
DM was derived from the contents of acid detergent fibre,
which explained 73.3% of the total variation. The best prediction
of the ED of CP (R = 0.592) was related negatively to the
proportion of insoluble nitrogen in neutral detergent fibre
and positively to the CP concentration as the first and second
predictive variables. However, the first variable allowed a
good estimation of the ED of CP for the dehydrated lucerne
samples presented in a long form (R = 0.818). Degradation studies
of DM and CP also indicated that most of the N available to animals
was derived from rumen microbial synthesis.
In situ intestinal digestibility of dry matter and crude protein of cereal grains and rapeseed in sheep
The ruminal degradation and intestinal digestibility (ID) of dry matter (DM)
and crude protein (CP) of different feed samples were measured in two trials
by using nylon bag and rumen outflow rate techniques in three wethers
cannulated in the rumen and in the duodenum. In trial 1, three samples
of grains of wheat, barley, and corn treated by cooking (TW, TB, and TC,
respectively) were studied together with a sample of untreated corn grains
(CG) of different origin. In trial 2, these studies were carried out on a
sample of rapeseed (RS) and on a mix of this same sample and rapeseed meal
(in proportions 70: 30) treated by cooking (TR). In both trials, the animals
were fed at the same intake level (40 g DMkg LW) with 2:1 (DM basis)
forage to concentrate diets. Rumen degradation rates of DM were high in the
treated cereals (between 11.0 and 14.2%h) and low in the CG
(6.35%h), whereas for CP these rates were low in all cereals.
For DM, in all cereals, ID decreased linearly as the ruminal incubation
time increased. The values of intestinal effective digestibility (IED),
calculated from these functions and from the rumen outflow, were
respectively: 86.4, 62.1, 51.5, and 67.9%. For CP, ID was unaffected
by the ruminal incubation time in corn samples, whereas in TW and TB
a reduction of these values was only observed for the time of 48 h.
The values of IED of CP for CG, TW, TB and TC were: 82.6, 88.9, 82.5,
and 91.6%, respectively. Rumen degradation rates of the RS and TR samples
were 8.35 and 8.23%h for DM and 12.0 and 9.59%h for CP. In RS,
the ID of DM and CP showed a downward trend with an increase of the
ruminal incubation time, as modelled according to an exponential function.
This same trend was observed for TR after a lag period estimated at 7.53
and 6.51 h for DM and CP, respectively. The values of IED of RS and TR
were respectively 56.5 and 50.8% for DM and 71.9 and 80.1% for CP.
These same results were also determined by a simplified method using
a sample pooled to be representative of the rumen outflow of undegraded
feed. The respective values for RS and TR were 54.8 and 51.6 for DM and
65.8 and 78.9% for CP. This method seems to be a promising technique to
estimate IED, although more studies are needed to improve its accuracy
