#MoreLearningLessDebt: Voices of Aspiring Teachers on Why Money Matters

    Get PDF
This report delves into a 2019-2020 survey that Prepared To Teach conducted at twelve institutions across seven states and explores aspiring teachers’ financial burdens with a specific focus on the link between said burdens and the desire for strong teacher preparation programs that include clinical practice. Learn about the many daily anxieties that aspiring teachers face, the difficult choices they are often forced to make in order to pursue their passion for teaching, and the impact this has on the quality and diversity of teacher candidates. Finally, find out why the future of the teaching profession depends on improving access to quality preparation programs by ensuring that aspiring teachers are supported financially in their journey to becoming the best-prepared educators they can be.https://educate.bankstreet.edu/pt/1007/thumbnail.jp

An empirical study of challenges in managing the security in cloud computing

    Get PDF
Cloud computing is being heralded as an important trend in information technology throughout the world. Benefits for business and IT include reducing costs and increasing productivity. The downside is that many organizations are moving swiftly to the cloud without making sure that the information they put in the cloud is secure. The purpose of this paper is to learn from IT and IT security practitioners in the Indian Continent the current state of cloud computing security in their organizations and the most significant changes anticipated by respondents as computing resources migrate from on-premise to the cloud. As organizations grapple with how to create a secure cloud computing environment, we believe the findings from this study can provide guidance on how to address business and technology risks exacerbated by cloud computing. Specifically, in this paper cloud computing users evaluate security technologies and control practices they believe are best deployed either onpremise or in the cloud. Survey results are presented where we have asked cloud-computing users to rate the types of sensitive or confidential information too risky to be moved to the cloud. Alongside this paper also discusses the need of having SSL in the cloud to provide definitive way of securing the cloud

The Affordability Imperative: Creating Equitable Access to Quality Teacher Preparation

This report is one of three case studies on the 3Rs of sustainably funded teacher preparation (reallocation, reduction, and reinvestment) developed by Prepared To Teach. This case focuses on reduction—the strategies and stories inside are intended to help universities maximize access to financial aid sources and minimize costs associated with quality programs.https://educate.bankstreet.edu/pt/1010/thumbnail.jp

Aspiring for More: Deeper Partnerships for Sustainable Residencies

    Get PDF
Aspiring for More: Deeper Partnerships for Sustainable Residencies shares lessons learned from 12 university/school district sites as they implemented teacher residency programs during the 2019-2020 school year. Sites began their programs in 2019, after a year of development and co-construction activities led by Prepared To Teach, and contributed to a national learning network. The report focuses on findings from this work in six domains: sustainability, partnership development, program redesign, supporting school improvement, mentor development, and resident learning. Learn more about the residency implementation process in different contexts and the key takeaways for universities and districts looking to establish a sustainable residency program.https://educate.bankstreet.edu/pt/1008/thumbnail.jp

The Anti-radical Classicism of Karl Marx's Dissertation

    Get PDF
This chapter situates Karl Marx’s dissertation The Difference between the Democritean and Epicurean Philosophy of Nature (1841) within his intellectual biography. It explores the role of a German ideal known as Bildung, translated as “education”, “cultivation” or “culture”, within Marx’s classical education in the Gymnasium and the dissertation itself. Both Wilhelm von Humboldt, who reformed the Gymnasium curriculum prior to Marx’s attendance, and philosopher G.W.F. Hegel have classically inspired notions of Bildung. Each presents the white European man as the model for this “education” or “cultivation”. This chapter argues that the dissertation assimilates Epicurus and his atom into this Eurocentric paradigm, with Marx taking for granted his predecessors’ racist teleology of history and applying their conception of the individual to the atom. Then, it addresses the dissertation’s influence in the development of historical materialism, a facet of Marxism already critiqued for its Eurocentrism. This chapter concludes by showing how non-White and non-Western Marxists have updated Marxist thought through constant critique of its Eurocentrism instead of abandoning its revolutionary vision. It suggests that Marxism is relevant to scholars of antiquity not because of the dissertation but the tradition’s self-interrogation of its foundational ideas and persistent focus on improving the conditions of the marginalised

Five Domains for Transforming Teacher Preparation

    Get PDF
This report describes the process of establishing the current Prepared To Teach theory of change, which supports national communities of practice in five domains identified by the Network\u27s learning agenda in the 2019-2020 school year: mindset shifts, educator roles, labor market alignment, school improvement, and deeper learning. Read how these five domains are explored through existing residency partnership programs, how individual programs both solidified and strengthened existing partnerships, and important insights into how to expand and share the benefits partnerships can reap through their work together. Finally, explore how the domains center the need for systemic changes built upon the cornerstones of justice and equity in order to construct an educational system that helps every student thrive.https://educate.bankstreet.edu/pt/1009/thumbnail.jp

Sox2 induction by FGF and FGFR2 activating mutations inhibits Wnt signaling and osteoblast differentiation

    Get PDF
Activating mutations in fibroblast growth factor receptor 2 (FGFR2) cause several craniosynostosis syndromes by affecting the proliferation and differentiation of osteoblasts, which form the calvarial bones. Osteoblasts respond to FGF with increased proliferation and inhibition of differentiation. We analyzed the gene expression profiles of osteoblasts expressing FGFR2 activating mutations (C342Y or S252W) and found a striking down-regulation of the expression of many Wnt target genes and a concomitant induction of the transcription factor Sox2. Most of these changes could be reproduced by treatment of osteoblasts with exogenous FGF. Wnt signals promote osteoblast function and regulate bone mass. Sox2 is expressed in calvarial osteoblasts in vivo and we show that constitutive expression of Sox2 inhibits osteoblast differentiation and causes down-regulation of the expression of numerous Wnt target genes. Sox2 associates with β-catenin in osteoblasts and can inhibit the activity of a Wnt responsive reporter plasmid through its COOH-terminal domain. Our results indicate that FGF signaling could control many aspects of osteoblast differentiation through induction of Sox2 and regulation of the Wnt–β-catenin pathway
