Remote sensing of cirrus clouds and aerosols by a sun photometer in Tunisia

    Get PDF
International audienceSome ground based measurements of solar radiation by using a sun photometer, have been conducted in Tunisia during the period of November 2000–February 2002. Five key measurement sites were selected: Three Sites (Tunis, Sousse, Gabes) are located on the Mediterranean coast and Two sites (Gafsa, Tozeur) on the boarder of Sahara. Over a total of 149 measurement days, 21 days are identified as clear sky, 114 days as Cirrus clouds and 14 days as aerosols. Aerosols and Cirrus clouds Optical Thickness (AOT) are derived from photometric measurements at 532 nm wavelength. Spatial and temporal variabilities of AOT are presented and discussed in this paper. Cirrus clouds were frequently observed at Gafsa and Tozeur where saharan aerosol events are expected to be more frequent than cirrus clouds. The mediterranean sea and saharan aerosols are suspected to have the main role in cirrus clouds formation, by providing water vapor and high concentrations of cloud condensation and ice forming nuclei

Plant Diversity Patterns Along Altitudinal Gradient in Understory Communities of Darkesh Region, Bojnord, Iran

The ecotone region of Darkesh with an area of 22,500 hectares is located in the Irano-Turanian xeric-continental bioclimatic zone of Khorassan-Kopet Dagh. To investigate the plant diversity patterns of understory communities along three elevation classes of 1100-1600, 1600-2100, and 2100-2600 m, 187 plots were sampled randomly and abundance and cover of species were recorded using 4-m2 plots. Beta diversity and Hill indices were calculated by using R and PAST software. A total of 252 species were recorded including 31 perennial grasses. The most abundant grasses were Poa nemoralis, Poa bulbosa, Bromus sterilis, Brachypodium sylvaticum, and Dactylis glomerata subsp. glomerata. Poa nemoralis was an important dominant grass under Quercus community. From the standpoint of species richness, Hill indices were highest under woods stories along the elevation of 1100-1600 m. Understories of oak forest and alpine communities had almost the same indices and were in the second rank compared to woods communities. Based on the ÎČ diversity index, the wood understory had the highest indices followed by Quercus and alpine communities. By increasing the elevations, the diversity of understory communities also decreased

Educating for Entrepreneurial Leadership: From Didacticism to Co-creation

    Get PDF
Entrepreneurial leadership promotes organisational competitive advantage and innovation resulting in increased attention on entrepreneurial leadership development. Many higher education institutions (HEIs) claim to develop entrepreneurial leaders. However, knowledge of how to facilitate entrepreneurial leadership development is limited, the effectiveness of development practices is contestable, and current understanding of the phenomenon is mostly conceptual. We address this void by exploring educators’ perspectives of entrepreneurial leadership development and consider how the phenomenon is facilitated. We employ Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) as our research methodology and analyse the data following IPA data analysis guidance. Findings signify the importance of placing strong emphasis on co-creating education experience with wider stakeholder involvement, thereby forming an entrepreneurial community which works collectively over the longer-term to facilitate entrepreneurial leadership development. The findings also reveal the pedagogic significance of facilitating supportive learning conditions and ‘handholding,’ a broader form of support which contradicts the established notion of ‘independent learners’ thereby challenging current ontologies around ‘student support’ when facilitating entrepreneurial leadership development

Quantum Correlations Dynamics In Two Coupled Semiconductor InAs Quantum Dots

We investigate the dynamics of quantum discord and concurrence between two excitonic qubits placed inside two coupled semiconductor quantum dots independently interacting with dephasing reservoirs. We explore their behavior against the dimensionless time and the temperature in both Markovian and non-Markovian environments. Moreover, we analyze the external electric field effects and the F\"orster interaction effects on these correlations. We show that, although the quantum correlations amount is strongly influenced by the variation of the electric field and the F\"orster interaction, their non-Markovian behavior is still preserved under the variation of these two parameters. Furthermore, we show that for large values of temperature and dimensionless time, unlike concurrence which vanishes, nonzero discord can still be observed.Comment: 15 pages, 12 figure

The incidence of prostate cancer in Iran: Results of a population-based cancer registry

    Get PDF
Background: Little is known about the epidemiology of prostate cancer in Iranian men. We carried out an active prostate cancer surveillance program in five provinces of Iran. Methods: Data used in this study were obtained from population-based cancer registries between 1996 and 2000. Results: The age-standardized incidence rate of prostate carcinoma in the five provinces was 5.1 per 100,000 person-years. No significant difference was seen in the age-standardized incidence rate of prostate cancer within the provinces studied. The mean±SD age of patients with prostate cancer was 67±13.5 years. Conclusion: The incidence of prostate cancer in Iran is very low as compared to the Western countries. This can partly be explained by lack of nationwide screening program, younger age structure and quality of cancer registration system in Iran

Drug-related mutational patterns in hepatitis B virus (HBV) reverse transcriptase proteins from Iranian treatment-NaĂŻve chronic HBV patients

Background: Immunomodulators and Nucleotide analogues have been used globally for the dealing of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. However, the development of drug resistance is a major limitation to their long-term effectiveness. Objectives: The aim of this study was to characterize the hepatitis B virus reverse transcriptase (RT) protein variations among Iranian chronic HBV carriers who did not receive any antiviral treatments. Materials and Methods: Hepatitis B virus partial RT genes from 325 chronic in active carrier patients were amplified and directly sequenced. Nucleotide/amino acid substitutions were identified compared to the sequences obtained from the database. Results: All strains belonging to genotype D.365 amino-acid substitutions were found. Mutations related to lamivudine, adefovir, telbivudine, and entecavir occurred in (YMDD) 4% (n = 13), (SVQ) 17.23% (n = 56), (M204I/V + L180M) 2.45% (n = 8) and (M204I) 2.76% (n = 9) of patients, respectively. Conclusions: RT mutants do occur naturally and could be found in HBV carriers who have never received antiviral therapy. However, mutations related to drug resistance in Iranian treatment-naïve chronic HBV patients were found to be higher than other studies published formerly. Chronic HBV patients should be monitored closely prior the commencement of therapy to achieve the best regimen option. © 2013, KOWSAR Corp

ÎČ\beta-NMR of Isolated 8^{8}Li+^{+} Implanted into a Thin Copper Film

Depth-controlled ÎČ\beta-NMR was used to study highly spin-polarized 8^8Li in a Cu film of thickness 100 nm deposited onto a MgO substrate. The positive Knight Shifts and spin relaxation data show that 8^8Li occupies two sites at low temperatures, assigned to be the substitutional (SS) and octahedral (OO) interstitial sites. Between 50 to 100 K, there is a site change from OO to SS. The temperature dependence of the Knight shifts and spin-lattice relaxation rates at high temperatures, i.e. when all the Li are in the SS site, is consistent with the Korringa Law for a simple metal.Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys.
