Faire et refaire l’histoire de l’architecture : le rôle des archives d’architecture face aux erreurs de la recherche

Cet article entend interroger les méthodes de l’histoire de l’architecture au regard d’un travail de définition de la notion d’« erreur » dans le champ de la recherche scientifique. Il s’agit, ensuite, d’analyser la contribution de la redécouverte et de la collecte des archives de l’architecture à partir des années 1970 en France au renouvellement méthodologique et épistémologique en histoire de l’architecture.In the 1970’s, André Chastel and various actors of Architecture called for measures regarding the alarming situation that architectural archives and records in France are facing. The recognition and the collecting of theses architectural artefacts contribute to the renewal of the history of architecture as a discipline which is simultaneously examined with regards to the various errors implanted in its construction

Vers une définition épistémologique de l’archive en histoire de l’architecture contemporaine

Cet article entend définir la notion d’archive dans le champ de l’histoire de l’architecture. Les archives des architectes sont des objets identifiés et familiers des historiens de l’architecture français. Cependant, leur rôle dans la fabrication de l’histoire de l’architecture n’a été que peu développé. Ici, nous interrogeons la notion d’«  archive » au singulier, telle qu’elle a été définie par quelques philosophes de l’histoire, à la recherche d’éléments permettant de définir les apports de ces archives à la construction disciplinaire de l’histoire de l’architecture.This paper aims at defining the notion of “archive” in the field of architectural history. Architects’ archives have been known and identified by French architectural historians. However, their role in the making of architectural history has not been explained and analysed thoroughly. Acteurs et dynamiques de l’histoire de l’architecture à Bordeaux dans la seconde moitié du XXe siècle.

Cette contribution s’inscrit dans un dynamique visant à appréhender l’évolution de l’histoire de l’architecture en tant que champ d’enseignement et de recherche, au-delà des clivages institutionnels qui le segmentent et au sein de pôles régionaux identifiés. Ainsi, une première situation concrète analysée dans le cadre d’une journée d’études tenue à Bordeaux en novembre 2018, permet de faire émerger quelques d’hypothèses et d’alimenter des questionnements autour des acteurs, des institutions et des courants d’idée qui ont façonné le champ de l’histoire de l’architecture au fil du second XXe siècle en France. Les parcours d’historiens, témoignant de la diversité du champ et de sa structuration au fil des cinquante dernières années, mettent en lumière tant l’hybridité des profils professionnels que la pluralité des approches théoriques développées.This contribution is part of a wider dynamic aimed at understanding the evolution of Architectural History as a field of teaching and research, beyond the institutional divisions that segment it and within identified regional poles. Thus, a first concrete situation, analysed during a one-day workshop held in Bordeaux in November 2018, allows a certain number of hypotheses to emerge and to feed questions around the actors, the institutions and the currents of thought that have shaped the field of Architectural History throughout the second half of the 20th century in France. The careers of historians, which bear witness to the diversity of the field and its structuring over the last fifty years, highlight both the hybridity of professional profiles and the plurality of theoretical approaches

History and Historiography of the Archives of the Architects in France at the Institut français d’architecture, 1968-1998

Cette thèse analyse les jalons de la fabrication d’une politique publique et nationale de conservation et de valorisation des archives des architectes en France dans le dernier quart du XXe siècle et ses effets sur l’histoire de l’architecture contemporaine française. En parcourant une période qui s’étale de la fin des années 1960 au début des années 2000, ce travail met en exergue le rôle d’une institution : l’Institut français d’architecture. Ainsi, la thèse analyse, d’une part, les modalités d’émergence et d’institutionnalisation des structures chargées de la collecte et de la valorisation des archives d’architectes en France en restituant les « jeux d’acteurs », c’est-à-dire à la fois les enjeux de concurrence institutionnelle, les jalons du débat programmatique et les trajectoires individuelles. D’autre part, à travers la question des archives d’architectes, c’est la construction de la discipline historique en architecture qui est interrogée. En dressant le portrait d’un milieu, l’étude interroge l’autonomie d’un champ disciplinaire partagé entre des lieux d’enseignement isolés et divisé entre des ambitions divergentes. En examinant les évolutions de la collecte et de ses modalités de valorisation à travers les publications et expositions, l’étude établit la place de l’IFA et de son Centre d’archives d’architecture du XXe siècle dans la fabrication de l’histoire de l’architecture récente en France. A travers l’analyse croisée de sources écrites et de sources orales, ce travail propose de considérer trois périodes (1968-1980 ; 1980-1988 ; 1988-1998) au cours desquelles l’élaboration d’une politique de conservation des archives des architectes a défini un cadre institutionnel, méthodologique et épistémologique grâce auquel l’histoire de l’architecture a pu entreprendre sa rénovation. Outre les dynamiques institutionnelles, administratives et politiques, la thèse souligne le rôle de quelques personnalités pionnières (André Chastel, Maurice Culot, Bruno Foucart, etc.) qui ont façonné l’histoire de l’architecture contemporaine française telle que nous la connaissons aujourd’hui.This thesis analyses the milestones of the development of a public and national policy for the conservation of the archives of architects in France in the last quarter of the 20th century and its effects on the history of contemporary French architecture. Covering a period from the late 1960s to the early 2000s, this work highlights the role of an institution: the Institut français d'architecture. On the one hand, the thesis analyses the modalities of emergence and institutionalization of structures in charge of collecting architectural archives in France by looking into the challenges of institutional competition, the stakes of the programmatic debate and the individual trajectories. On the other hand, through the question of architects' archives, this work questions the construction of the historical discipline in architecture. By drawing the portrait of a milieu, the study questions the autonomy of a disciplinary field divided between different educational institutions and between divergent ambitions. By examining the evolution of its collection and the way history was written through publications and exhibitions, the study establishes the place of the IFA and its Centre d'archives d'architecture du XXe siècle in the production of the history of recent architecture in France. Through the cross-referenced analysis of written and oral sources, this work proposes to consider three periods (1968-1980; 1980-1988; 1988-1998) during which the development of a policy for the conservation of the archives of architects defined an institutional, methodological and epistemological framework which renovated the way architectural history was made, taught and written. In addition to the institutional, administrative and political dynamics, the thesis highlights the role of pioneering personalities (André Chastel, Maurice Culot, Bruno Foucart, etc.) who have shaped contemporary architectural French history as we know it today

Archives de l’architecture des administrations : un état de la question et de la recherche

This paper seeks to address the topic of 'administrative architecture' with regards to the gathering and the preservation of the sources of their recent history (since 1945). Acknowledging the latest research, this analysis aims to clarifiy the vocabulary used to refer to this architectural theme which is characterised by an interesting contradiction: rather neglected by research, it has the advantage of being documented by very numerous and diverse sources. Like other architectural categories, the history of administrative architectures make use of public archives (from State archives to local archives), and private archives. Among the latest, architects’ archives can be relevant sources to analyse the evolution of architectural programmes, the understanding of construction methods and actors, and forms of architectural languages of these buildings embodying and accomodating power. Conceived in 1986 in the period of “decentralisation” in france, le Centre d’archives d’architecture du xx e siècle of the Institut français d’architecture now has more than 450 architects’ archives. Most of them can enrich the history of architecture of power
