Group-Average Observables as Controls for Sorting on Unobservables When Estimating Group Treatment Effects: The Case of School and Neighborhood Effects
We consider the classic problem of estimating group treatment effects when individuals sort based on observed and unobserved characteristics. Using a standard choice model, we show that controlling for group averages of observed individual characteristics potentially absorbs all the across-group variation in unobservable individual characteristics. We use this insight to bound the treatment effect variance of school systems and associated neighborhoods for various outcomes. Across four datasets, our conservative estimates indicate that a 90th versus 10th percentile school system increases high school graduation and college enrollment probabilities by at least 0.047 and 0.11. Evaluations are presented of alternative LANDSAT follow-on launch configurations to derive the propulsion requirements for the multimission modular spacecraft (MMS). Two basic types were analyzed including use of conventional launch vehicles and shuttle-supported missions. It was concluded that two sizes of modular hydrazine propulsion modules would provide the most cost-effective combination for future missions of this spacecraft. Conceptual designs of the selected propulsion modules were performed to the depth permitting determination of mass properties and estimated costs

Asthma Education and Care Coordination in the Medical Home
Asthma is the most common chronic disease in childhood. In spite of the many advances in the medical management of asthma, families frequently seek treatment for acute exacerbations of asthma in the emergency department. The purpose of this project was to evaluate asthma care provided to pediatric patients at a community health center in New England through scheduled nursing visits for asthma education and care coordination. The asthma education and care coordination program was developed based on both the NHLBI, NAEPP, Expert Panel 3, 2007 guidelines and ANA White Paper and Agency for Health Care Quality (AHRQ) value of nursing care coordination. The evaluation phase of the Ottawa Model for Research Utilization Model using data gathered from patients, practitioners, and systems was used to assess the effectiveness of the intervention. Results of this evaluation reveal that although all of the nurses received education and training at each of twelve clinic sites the results from the three sites identify that the nurses were not providing the asthma education and care coordination visits. Recommendations include further education, training, and a change in clinic nurse role to fully implement the program

This study selects novels from French and Spanish language traditions, which may not be available to English-speakers, in order to determine if specific aspects throw light on our understanding of Madrid as a destination. Marc Lambron's L'Impromptu de Madrid and Antonio Munoz Molina’s Mysteries of Madrid are taken as proof of the influence the narrative can exert on social daily life and consumption. Narrative foregrounds the fictions which are at stake in imagining the city as destination and also provides a vehicle for presenting the much broader social forces that converge in the author at the time of imagining and writing
Measurement of focusing properties for high numerical aperture optics using an automated submicron beamprofiler
The focusing properties of three aspheric lenses with numerical aperture (NA)
between 0.53 and 0.68 were directly measured using an interferometrically
referenced scanning knife-edge beam profiler with sub-micron resolution. The
results obtained for two of the three lenses tested were in agreement with
paraxial gaussian beam theory. It was also found that the highest NA aspheric
lens which was designed for 830nm was not diffraction limited at 633nm. This
process was automated using motorized translation stages and provides a direct
method for testing the design specifications of high numerical aperture optics.Comment: 6 pages 4 figure
Nitric oxide, a survival factor for lens epithelial cells
Purpose: Nitric oxide (NO) is capable of promoting either cell death or cell survival depending on cell type and experimental conditions. In this study, the possible effects of NO on the viability of lens epithelial cells were investigated in an explant model used previously to identify cellular changes associated with posterior capsule opacification following cataract surgery.
Methods: Rat lens epithelial explants prepared from weanling rats were cultured in a serum-free medium for five days with or without the addition of the nitric oxide synthase inhibitor, L-Nω-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME), using the inactive enantiomer D-NAME as a control. Alternatively, explants were cultured for nine days with or without the NO donor, sodium nitroprusside. Explants were assessed morphologically and immunohistochemically or by determining DNA content.
Results: In the presence of L-NAME but not in controls, progressive rounding up and detachment of cells from the lens capsule occurred, leading to extensive cell loss. Affected cells showed apoptosis-like cell-surface blebbing and nuclear fragmentation. Conversely, inclusion of sodium nitroprusside suppressed the morphological changes and spontaneous cell loss that occurred when sparsely covered explants were cultured for nine days, increased cell coverage fourfold during that period, and prevented the expression of the transdifferentiation markers α-smooth muscle actin and fibronectin. In addition, whereas L-NAME exacerbated cell loss induced by culturing with 50 pg/ml transforming growth factor-β2, sodium nitroprusside offered protection.
Conclusions: This study points to a previously unidentified role for NO as an endogenously produced survival factor for lens epithelial cells, raising the possibility of using NO deprivation as a means of removing residual lens cells following cataract surgery and thereby preventing posterior capsule opacification
Curvature condensation and bifurcation in an elastic shell
We study the formation and evolution of localized geometrical defects in an
indented cylindrical elastic shell using a combination of experiment and
numerical simulation. We find that as a symmetric localized indentation on a
semi-cylindrical shell increases, there is a transition from a global mode of
deformation to a localized one which leads to the condensation of curvature
along a symmetric parabolic crease. This process introduces a soft mode in the
system, converting a load-bearing structure into a hinged, kinematic mechanism.
Further indentation leads to twinning wherein the parabolic crease bifurcates
into two creases that move apart on either side of the line of symmetry. A
qualitative theory captures the main features of the phenomena and leads to
