Schiff bases of N-methyl and N-acetyl isatin derivatives with different aryl amines have been synthesized and screened for anticonvulsant activities against maximal electroshock (MES) and subcutaneous metrazole (ScMet). N-methyl-5-bromo-3-(p-chlorophenylimino) isatin 2 exhibited anticonvulsant activity in MES and ScMet with LD50 > 600 mg kg-1, showing better activity than the standard drugs phenytoin, carbamazepine and valproic acid. Thus, compound 2 may be chosen as a prototype for development of new anticonvulsants.

    MTA-Based Root Canal Sealers

Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) has been recommended for pulp capping, pulpotomy, apical barrier formation in teeth with open apexes, repair of root perforation and root canal obturation. Since, its introduction in 1993 by Torabinejad numerous studies have been published regarding various aspects of this material. The aim of this review was to consider MTA as root canal sealer and various laboratory experiments and clinical studies of MTAbased root canal sealers. An extensive search of the endodontic  literature was made to identify publications related to MTA-based root canal sealers. The articles were assessed for the outcome of laboratory and clinical studies on their biological properties and physical characteristics. Comparative studies with other sealers were also considered. Several studies were evaluated covering different properties of MTA-based sealers includingphysical properties, biocompatibility, leakage, adhesion, solubility, antibacterial properties and periapical healing effect. Comparative studies reveal their mild cytotoxicity, but theirantibacterial effects are variable. Further research is required to establish the role of MTA as root canal sealers

Spatio-temporal genetic diversity in Indian barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) varieties based on SSR markers

545-552Barley is a popular cereal crop of nutritious and industrial importance and there is always a scope to improve a particular crop in view of its value and demand. Spatio-temporal studies discuss the diversity level among the existing varieties as well as the trend of genetic variation over a period of time and are useful in designing suitable strategies for genetic enhancement and improvement of a particular crop. Here, we used SSR markers to assess the level of spatio-temporal genetic diversity among fifty diverse released varieties of barley from India. Spatial diversity (0.233±0.16) was higher in varieties having exotic parentage as compared to the indigenous varieties (0.176±0.18) and significant diversity was also observed among the varieties released from different developing centers. There was a rising trend in % polymorphism and other diversity parameters among the barley varieties released before 1960s to 1970s, which may be attributed to the increasing usage of exotic germplasm during these decades. Increase in temporal diversity from 1970s to 1980s and to 1990s was not much as compared to earlier decades, which suggests that more diverse germplasm should be used to widen the genetic base of barley varieties released over the years. Further, structure and AMOVA results revealed strong differentiation among spatial groups, but not between temporal groups. The role of spatio-temporal genetic diversity studies and the importance of periodic monitoring of the varieties released for further crop improvement was emphasized

Not AvailableIn plants, Calcium-Dependent Protein Kinases (CDPKs) play multiple roles with a variety of functions in physiological processes, biotic and abiotic stress together with plant hormone signalling. We conducted a genome-wide analysis of CDPK gene family in eggplant. Total 28 CDPKs and 2 CDPK-related kinases (CRKs) genes were identified in eggplant genome. Structural organisation of Solanum melongena CDPKs and CRK genes as well as different conserved domains and motifs were studied. Both SmeCDPKs and SmeCRK proteins harbour STKc_CAMK type protein kinase domain, while only SmeCDPKs contained EF-hand type Ca2+ binding domain(s). Phylogenetic analysis suggested the conserved basic structure of SmeCDPKs and classified into four clades. The amino acid residue patterns of sub-domains including the conserved EF hands were identified for SmeCDPKs. An elaborate search of eggplant ESTs available in public domain shows presence of SmeCDPK in different tissue specific libraries and most of them were expressed in mixture of flower bud, young fruit, leaf and ovary tissues. SmeCDPK 28/18 and 34 were specific to ovary and stamen libraries, respectively. Further, expression of SmeCDPKs was checked making use of eggplant transcriptome available in public domain. The information generated will significantly imparts the basic step for further functional study of CDPKs gene family in eggplant. Not Availabl

Not AvailableUnderstanding the level of genetic diversity and structure of landraces is essential for economical use of genetic resources. In the present study, we investigated the genetic diversity of 36 representative sample of cucumber genotypes based on 10 quantitative traits and 17 polymorphic simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers. Our result revealed variability in flowering behavior, growth habit and fruit characters. We found that the traits, days to opening of first female flower varied from 39.03 to 51.94, fruit length 6.09 to 30.01(cm), fruit weight 104.39 to 277.05(g) and yield per plant 699.38 to 1670.93(g). Genetic distance based on 17 SSR markers among 36 genotypes was quantified ranging from 0.03 to 0.70 indicated a wide diversity among the genotypes selected for evaluation in the present study. These primers produced 2-4 number of alleles with an average 2.76. Polymorphism information content varied from 0.005 to 0.550 with an average of 0.348. The observed heterozygosity mean was 0.098, while gene diversity or expected heterozygosity was 0.625 to 0.057. The distinct genotypes found in this study based on morpho-molecular characters will great interest to cucumber breeder for selection of diverse parent or production of mapping population. Not Availabl
