The Study of Information Revisited: Chaos in the Emergence of Disciplinary Identity

    Get PDF
This research will develop time-series fractal maps of LIS and CIS. The maps will be used to trace the trajectory of Information Science from its beginnings in 1965 into the future. Following Machlup and Mansfield (1983), we plan to analyze the logical, methodological, and pragmatic relations among and between these two areas of study centered on information creation, access, distribution and use. Our goal is to facilitate understanding of the future trajectories of the discipline of Information Science, and thereby, those of LIS and CIS through systematic examination of past and present trends. Because these trends are neither linear in their progression nor take place in a vacuum, our analysis will be guided by the fractal theory developed by Andrew Abbott in Chaos of Disciplines

Information technology and the information technology workforce are essential to Internet innovation, infrastructure, development, and maintenance. A comprehensive and dynamic definition of information technology will help develop and coordinate interventions to ensure that a viable, diverse, and talented workforce is available to support information technology innovation, development, implementation, maintenance and application. A viable, diverse, and talented workforce is essential if the United States is to remain competitive in the economy. It is therefore necessary to establish consensus among information technology stakeholders on a definition of information technology prior to proceeding with classification of the workforce and development of educational programs. Wiki and ontology (Topic Maps) are two recent information technology innovations that provide the technological infrastructure necessary to achieve these goals

How do successful Latina IT professionals construct and reconstruct their conceptions of gender before, during, and after contact with the information world of the IT industry? We conducted semi-structured phone interviews with five Latinas who held senior management positions in IT firms in 2008 to explore their reasons for choosing and persisting in the workforce. Using the theory of information worlds as a framework for analysis of gender as a boundary object, this article reports four trends in the perceptions of these women dealing with the relationship between gender and success in IT
