    Poverty and Aspirations Failure

    Get PDF
We develop a theoretical framework to study the psychology of poverty and 'aspirations failure'. In our framework, the rich and the poor share the same preferences - and also a behavioral bias in setting aspirations. Greater downside risks imposed by poverty exacerbates the effects of this behavioral bias: the poor are more susceptible to both an aspirations failure and pessimism about the likelihood of achieving success. Poverty limits the set of people whose life experiences the poor consider relevant for forming their own beliefs and aspirations. Mitigating behavioral poverty traps require policies which go beyond reducing material deprivation.Reference-dependent Preferences;Aspirations;Persistent Poverty;Locus of control;Simillarity and Belief Formation

A new method for the determination of atmospheric turbidity

Atmospheric turbidity is usually measured using either a pyrheliometer fitted with a red RG630 filter or a Volz sun photometer, the turbidity coefficients so determined being designated as β and B, respectively. Both techniques are subject to error, the former in underestimating high turbidities and the latter in giving rise to errors at low turbidities. The present paper describes a new, simpler and less expensive method of evaluating β from measurements of direct and diffuse solar radiation, made as a routine at principal radiation stations. Using a theoretical model for determining the attenuation of solar radiation due to absorption and scattering by water vapour and other gases, dust and aerosols in the atmosphere, an expression for the ratio of diffuse to direct solar radiation D/IH is derived as a function of β. Then, from the hourly mean values of global and diffuse solar radiation routinely recorded at principal radiation stations, D/IH is calculated. β can now be readily evaluated using a special nomogram based on the formula relating β to D/IH. The values of β derived for Indian stations using the above technique show remarkable internal consistency and stability, proving its utility and reliabilit

Quantum discord and non-Markovianity of quantum dynamics

The problem of recognizing (non-)Markovianity of a quantum dynamics is revisited through analyzing quantum correlations. We argue that instantaneously-vanishing quantum discord provides a necessary and sufficient condition for Markovianity of a quantum map. This is used to introduce a measure of non-Markovianity. This measure, however, requires demanding knowledge about the system and the environment. By using a quantum correlation monogamy property and an ancillary system, we propose a simplified measure with less requirements. Non-Markovianity is thereby decided by quantum state tomography of the system and the ancilla.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

Privacy Preserving Mining on Vertically Partitioned Database

This system allows multiple data owners to outsource their data in a common could. This paper mainly emphases on privacy preserving mining on vertically partitioned database. It provides an even solution to protect data owner's raw data from the other data owners. To achieve secure outsourcing technique, the system proposes a cloud-aided frequent itemset mining solution. The run time in this system is one order higher than non-privacy preserving mining algorithms

Spray Deposition and Characterization of p-type Li doped NiO Thin Films

Undoped and lithium doped nickel oxide (Li doped NiO) thin films have been prepared onto glass substrates at 450 °C by chemical spray pyrolysis technique. The effect of lithium (Li) concentrations on the structural, optical, photoluminescence and electrical properties of the Li doped NiO films were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-vis- NIR spectrophotometer, Photoluminescence (PL) spectrophotometer, Hot probe and Hall effect measurement system. The PL results confirmed that the band gap reduces when the lithium concentration increases. The structural properties of undoped and Li doped NiO films showed polycrystalline cubic structure. The optical transmittance and band gap values of the films decreases, while the absorption values increases with the increase in Li concentration. Moreover, it has been observed that the resistivity of the above films decreases with the increase in Li concentration
