Total SciComm — All out science communication
This essay seeks to introduce a philosophy of science communication: Total SciComm or all out science communication. The concept is inspired by the Dutch total football, in which, every player can play at any role. Similarly, in Total Scicomm, the scientific community employs every medium to communicate scientific ideas and engages all scientist in the process.
Comparison and maximum principles for a class of flux-limited diffusions with external force fields
In this paper, we are interested in a general equation that has finite speed
of propagation compatible with Einstein's theory of special relativity. This
equation without external force fields has been derived recently by means of
optimal transportation theory. We first provide an argument to incorporate the
external force fields. Then we are concerned with comparison and maximum
principles for this equation. We consider both stationary and evolutionary
problems. We show that the former satisfies a comparison principle and a strong
maximum principle. While the latter fulfils weaker ones. The key technique is a
transformation that matches well with the gradient flow structure of the
equation.Comment: 15 pages. Comments are welcom
Volume form on moduli spaces of d-differentials
Given , , and an integral vector
such that and , let
denote the moduli space of meromorphic
-differentials on Riemann surfaces of genus whose zeros and poles have
orders prescribed by . We show that
carries a canonical volume form that is parallel with respect to its affine
complex manifold structure, and that the total volume of
with respect to the measure induced by this volume form is finite.Comment: Streamlined, minor corrections added, definition of the volume form
independent of the choice of a d-th root of unit
A review of growth stage deficit irrigation affecting sticky maize production
The shortage of water resources influences the future sustainability of sticky Maize (Zea mays L.) production. Deficit irrigation (DI) – a water management strategy – has gained much attention from scientists because of enhanced water use efficiency (WUE). Nonetheless, in reality, when applying this technique, its impact on yield and economic returns should be considered. Through an analytical literature review, this study examined the effect of growth stage DI on Maize production factors, i.e. yield, WUE, and economic returns. The results revealed that Maize’s WUE could be improved with the lowest reduction in yield as water stress was imposed during the vegetative or maturation growth stages. Therefore, the profitable returns could be reached even if the yield was reduced; however, the economic return was sensitive to commodity prices. The present review addressed that the Maize flexible capacities under growth stage water stress presented an opportunity for the optimization of irrigated water and profit preservation by accurately judging the managing time of irrigation implementation
Domestic Violence in Lac Su’s I Love Yous Are for White People: A Sociological Criticism Approach
This article employs sociological criticism to examine domestic violence, parenting, and communication behavior in Lac Su’s Vietnamese American memoir. The book debunks the seemingly positive myth of Asian Americans as a model minority, substantiates certain negative stereotypes of Asian men, and challenges some of the classic Asian values that apparently have shaped the Asian American identity. I argue that Su’s memoir is a critique of structural inequalities, urban poverty, unemployment, inaccessibility to a support network, and the intersection between class, gender, and race in the contexts of war and its aftermath
Translation surfaces and the curve graph in genus two
Let be a (topological) compact closed surface of genus two. We associate
to each translation surface a subgraph
of the curve graph of . The vertices of this subgraph are free homotopy
classes of curves which can be represented either by a simple closed geodesic,
or by a concatenation of two parallel saddle connections (satisfying some
additional properties) on . The subgraph is by
definition -invariant. Hence, it may be seen as
the image of the corresponding Teichm\"uller disk in the curve graph. We will
show that is always connected and has infinite
diameter. The group of affine automorphisms of
preserves naturally , we show that
is precisely the stabilizer of in . We also prove that is
Gromov-hyperbolic if is completely periodic in the sense of Calta.
It turns out that the quotient of by is closely related to McMullen's prototypes in the case
is a Veech surface in . We finally show that this
quotient graph has finitely many vertices if and only if is a
Veech surface for in both strata and

Thematic Shifts in Contemporary Vietnamese American Novels
This article examines the thematic shifts in three contemporary Vietnamese American novels published since 2003: Monique Truong\u27s The Book of Salt, Dao Strom\u27s Grass Roof, Tin Roof, and Bich Minh Nguyen\u27s Short Girls. I argue that by concentrating on the themes of inferiority and invisibility and issues related to ethnic and racial relationships in U.S. culture (instead of concentrating on the Vietnam War and the refugee experiences), some contemporary Vietnamese American authors are attempting to merge their voices into the corpus of ethnic American literature, which usually is thematically characterized by identity, displacement, alienation, and cultural conflict, etc. Each author explores the problems confronted by individuals caught up in various phases of the Vietnamese diaspora of the twentieth century. These important works are treated primarily thematically, even as the theoretical approaches of various critics are employed to examine those themes. All three novels take Vietnamese American literature in new thematic directions, which signals great promise for future developments. Key words: contemporary Vietnamese American novels, Monique Truong\u27s The Book of Salt, Dao Strom\u27s Grass Roof, Tin Roof, Bich Minh Nguyen\u27s Short Girls, invisible identity
