    On-Board Oxygen Generation Using High Performance Molecular Sieve

    The majority of high performance combat aircrafts presently being operated by Indian air Force are fitted with conventional oxygen systems in which a replenishable store of oxygen is carried, most often as liquid oxygen and the flow of gas to each crew member is controlled by an individual pressure demand regulator in which the oxygen is diluted with cabin air to provide breathing gas.Moreover, in-flight refueling capability of present generation fighter aircraft has made it possible to fly for long durations (6 to 8 hours). In such case, the oxygen source becomes one of the limiting factors. In order to meet this requirement, a large supply of Gaseous Oxygen (GASOX) or Liquid Oxygen (LOX) have proven to be a costly affair and the Onboard Oxygen Generating System (OBOGS) has become a very convenient and attractive proposal. The OBOGS employs molecular sieves to adsorb nitrogen from engine bleed air using pressure swing adsorption (PSA) technique, wherein two molecular sieve beds are continuously cycled between steps of pressurization (adsorption) and depressurization (desorption) to generate oxygen enriched breathing gas for aircrew. This paper describes the design of OBOGS using high performance Lithium based Low Silica X-type (Li-LSX) molecular sieves and its performance characteristics. It consists of two Zeolite beds filled with Li-LSX material which adsorbs nitrogen fromengine bleed air tapped from Environmental Control System pipe line. The two beds are cycled by a 5/2 way solenoid valve. The input air is supplied to the solenoid valve through a coalescent filter to reduce moisture from it and a pressure regulator is fitted at the upstream of solenoid valve to regulate the system pressure. The experimental setup for evaluation of OBOGS is also discussed. The OBOGS, presented in this paper, meets all the performance requirements as specified in MIL-C-85521 (AS).

    Synergistic effects of bombesin and epidermal growth factor on cancers.

    Bombesin and gastrin-releasing peptide act as autocrine mitogens in various cancers. Bombesin antagonist RC-3095 inhibited growth in some cancers and slowed the progression of premalignant lesions, possibly by down-regulating epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptors. Since the EGF receptor mitogen response involves tyrosine kinase stimulation, we tested the hypotheses that bombesin stimulates, and RC-3095 inhibits, phosphorylation; EGF and bombesin promote the phosphorylation of the same substrates; and EGF and bombesin act synergistically on phosphorylation. Therefore, in vitro assays for phosphorylation were performed in the presence or absence of EGF, bombesin, RC-3095, and combinations in samples derived from tumor, tissue surrounding tumor, cell lines, and normal and transforming tissue derived from the 9,10-dimethyl-1,2-benzanthracene-induced squamous cell lesions of the hamster cheek pouch. Bombesin increased, and RC-3095 decreased, phosphorylation in these samples. In the human hepatoma sample and surrounding tissue, these ligands altered the phosphorylation of the same substrates affected by EGF. EGF and bombesin stimulated phosphorylation synergistically in the hamster samples and the hepatoma. Bombesin-induced phosphorylation was greater in tissue surrounding the hepatoma, whereas RC-3095 was more effective in inhibiting phosphorylation in the hepatoma itself. This cancer, therefore, could be endogenously stimulated by gastrin-releasing peptide. These observations support the hypothesis that bombesin stimulates growth of tissues and tumors by amplifying the phosphorylation response to EGF. The growth inhibitory response to RC-3095, or other bombesin analogues, of individual tumors may be prognosed by in vitro phosphorylation assays using the samples from the patient's tumor

    The second ESGAR consensus statement on CT colonography

    To update quality standards for CT colonography based on consensus among opinion leaders within the European Society of Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Radiology (ESGAR). A multinational European panel of nine members of the ESGAR CT colonography Working Group (representing six EU countries) used a modified Delphi process to rate their level of agreement on a variety of statements pertaining to the acquisition, interpretation and implementation of CT colonography. Four Delphi rounds were conducted, each at 2 months interval. The panel elaborated 86 statements. In the final round the panelists achieved complete consensus in 71 of 86 statements (82 %). Categories including the highest proportion of statements with excellent Cronbach's internal reliability were colon distension, scan parameters, use of intravenous contrast agents, general guidelines on patient preparation, role of CAD and lesion measurement. Lower internal reliability was achieved for the use of a rectal tube, spasmolytics, decubitus positioning and number of CT data acquisitions, faecal tagging, 2D vs. 3D reading, and reporting. The recommendations of the consensus should be useful for both the radiologist who is starting a CTC service and for those who have already implemented the technique but whose practice may need updating

    Superconductivity and Pseudogap in Quasi-Two-Dimensional Metals around the Antiferromagnetic Quantum Critical Point

    Spin fluctuations (SF) and SF-mediated superconductivity (SC) in quasi-two-dimensional metals around the antiferrromagnetic (AF) quantum critical point (QCP) are investigated by using the self-consistent renormalization theory for SF and the strong coupling theory for SC. We introduce a parameter y0 as a measure for the distance from the AFQCP which is approximately proportional to (x-xc), x being the electron (e) or hole (h) doping concentration to the half-filled band and xc being the value at the AFQCP. We present phase diagrams in the T-y0 plane including contour maps of the AF correlation length and AF and SC transition temperatures TN and Tc, respectively. The Tc curve is dome-shaped with a maximum at around the AFQCP. The calculated one-electron spectral density shows a pseudogap in the high-density-of-states region near (pi,0) below around a certain temperature T* and gives a contour map at the Fermi energy reminiscent of the Fermi arc. These results are discussed in comparison with e- and h-doped high-Tc cuprates.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    Phase Decomposition and Chemical Inhomogeneity in Nd2-xCexCuO4

    Extensive X-ray and neutron scattering experiments and additional transmission electron microscopy results reveal the partial decomposition of Nd2-xCexCuO4 (NCCO) in a low-oxygen-fugacity environment such as that typically realized during the annealing process required to create a superconducting state. Unlike a typical situation in which a disordered secondary phase results in diffuse powder scattering, a serendipitous match between the in-plane lattice constant of NCCO and the lattice constant of one of the decomposition products, (Nd,Ce)2O3, causes the secondary phase to form an oriented, quasi-two-dimensional epitaxial structure. Consequently, diffraction peaks from the secondary phase appear at rational positions (H,K,0) in the reciprocal space of NCCO. Additionally, because of neodymium paramagnetism, the application of a magnetic field increases the low-temperature intensity observed at these positions via neutron scattering. Such effects may mimic the formation of a structural superlattice or the strengthening of antiferromagnetic order of NCCO, but the intrinsic mechanism may be identified through careful and systematic experimentation. For typical reduction conditions, the (Nd,Ce)2O3 volume fraction is ~1%, and the secondary-phase layers exhibit long-range order parallel to the NCCO CuO2 sheets and are 50-100 angstromsthick. The presence of the secondary phase should also be taken into account in the analysis of other experiments on NCCO, such as transport measurements.Comment: 15 pages, 17 figures, submitted to Phys.     Subthreshold K+ production in deuteron and alpha induced nuclear reactions

    Double differential cross sections have been measured for pi+ and K+ emitted around midraidity in d+A and He+A collisions at a beam kinetic energy of 1.15 GeV/nucleon. The total pi+ yield increases by a factor of about 2 when using an alpha projectile instead of a deuteron whereas the K+ yield increases by a factor of about 4. According to transport calculations, the K+ enhancement depends both on the number of hadron-hadron collisions and on the energy available in those collisions: their center-of-mass energy increases with increasing number of projectile nucleons

    Advances in single crystal growth and annealing treatment of electron-doped HTSC

    High quality electron-doped HTSC single crystals of Pr2xCexCuO4+δ\rm Pr_{2-x}Ce_{x}CuO_{4+\delta} and Nd2xCexCuO4+δ\rm Nd_{2-x}Ce_{x}CuO_{4+\delta} have been successfully grown by the container-free traveling solvent floating zone technique. The optimally doped Pr2xCexCuO4+δ\rm Pr_{2-x}Ce_{x}CuO_{4+\delta} and Nd2xCexCuO4+δ\rm Nd_{2-x}Ce_{x}CuO_{4+\delta} crystals have transition temperatures TcT_{\rm c} of 2525\,K and 23.523.5\,K, respectively, with a transition width of less than 11\,K. We found a strong dependence of the optimal growth parameters on the Ce content xx. We discuss the optimization of the post-growth annealing treatment of the samples, the doping extension of the superconducting dome for both compounds as well as the role of excess oxygen. The absolute oxygen content of the as-grown crystals is determined from thermogravimetric experiments and is found to be 4.0\ge 4.0. This oxygen surplus is nearly completely removed by a post-growth annealing treatment. The reduction process is reversible as demonstrated by magnetization measurements. In as-grown samples the excess oxygen resides on the apical site O(3). This apical oxygen has nearly no doping effect, but rather influences the evolution of superconductivity by inducing additional disorder in the CuO2_{2} layers. The very high crystal quality of Nd2xCexCuO4+δ\rm Nd_{2-x}Ce_{x}CuO_{4+\delta} is particularly manifest in magnetic quantum oscillations observed on several samples at different doping levels. They provide a unique opportunity of studying the Fermi surface and its dependence on the carrier concentration in the bulk of the crystals.Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures, submitted to Eur. Phys. J.

    On the α\alpha-decay of deformed actinide nuclei

    α\alpha-decay through a deformed potential barrier produces significant mixing of angular momenta when mapped from the nuclear interior to the outside. Using experimental branching ratios and either semi-classical or coupled-channels transmission matrices, we have found that there is a set of internal amplitudes which are essentially constant for all even--even actinide nuclei. These same amplitudes also give good results for the known anisotropic α\alpha-particle emission of the favored decays of odd nuclei in the same mass region.     Strength of Correlations in electron and hole doped cuprates

    High temperature superconductivity was achieved by introducing holes in a parent compound consisting of copper oxide layers separated by spacer layers. It is possible to dope some of the parent compounds with electrons, and their physical properties are bearing some similarities but also significant differences from the hole doped counterparts. Here, we use a recently developed first principles method, to study the electron doped cuprates and elucidate the deep physical reasons why their behavior is so different than the hole doped materials. We find that electron doped compounds are Slater insulators, e.g. a material where the insulating behavior is the result of the presence of magnetic long range order. This is in sharp contrast with the hole doped materials, where the parent compound is a Mott charge transfer insulator, namely a material which is insulating due to the strong electronic correlations but not due to the magnetic order.Comment: submitted to Nature Physic
