A comparative study of angle dependent magnetoresistance in [001] and [110] La2/3Sr1/3MnO3La_{2/3}Sr_{1/3}MnO_3

The angle dependent magnetoresistance study on [001] and [110] La2/3_{2 / 3}Sr1/3_{1 / 3}MnO3_{3} thin films show that the anisotropy energy of [110] films is higher when compared with a [001] oriented La2/3_{2 / 3}Sr1/3_{1 / 3}MnO3_{3} film of similar thickness. The data has been analyzed in the light of multidomain model and it is seen that this model correctly explains the observed behavior.Comment: 8pages, 2 figure

Drell-Yan, ZZ, W+W- production in SM & ADD model to NLO+PS accuracy at the LHC

In this paper, we present the next-to-leading order QCD corrections for di-lepton, di-electroweak boson (ZZ, W+W-) production in both the SM and the ADD model, matched to the HERWIG parton-shower using the aMC@NLO framework. A selection of results at the 8 TeV LHC, which exhibits deviation from the SM as a result of the large extra-dimension scenario are presented.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures, search sensitivity for the 14 TeV LHC discussed, version to appear in Eur. ZD6474 in combination with paclitaxel and UVB irradiation enhances the antiproliferative effect and apoptosis on breast carcinoma

Breast cancer is the leader of cancer deaths among women. Despite developments in surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, the long-term survival of patients with metastatic and higher staging breast cancer has remained very low. Breast cancers and their aggressive nature are characterized by overexpression of Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR) and Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Receptor (VEGFR). There is a common downstream signaling molecule involved in both EGFR and VEGFR mediated pathways. There are reports that cancer cells acquired resistance to anti-EGF/EGFR therapy by increased tumor-induced angiogenesis due to the constitutive overexpression of VEGF. Hence, the inhibition of both EGFR and VEGFR signaling pathways simultaneously may provide greater benefit than blockade of either pathway alone. There are also reports that breast cancer acquired resistance to conventional chemotherapy and radiotherapy by increased phosphorylation of EGFR and VEGFR. Moreover, patients suffering from breast cancer have a poor prognosis because of a lack of effective treatment strategies. We hypothesized that inhibiting the phosphorylation of the EGFR and VEGFR by ZD6474, a dual tyrosine kinase inhibitor of EGFR and VEGFR, in combination with paclitaxel or radiation would inhibit breast cancer cell growth. We tested this hypothesis using the human breast cancer cell lines MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231. In culture, ZD6474 in combination with paclitaxel or UVB had a synergistic effect in inhibition of cell proliferation, and lowered the IC50 by 10-fold and fivefold, respectively, compared with paclitaxel/UVB alone. Flow cytometry data suggest that combination therapy of ZD6474 with paclitaxel increases apoptosis from 20% to 45% in MDA-MB-231 and from 16% to 38% in MCF-7 compared with paclitaxel alone. This is further supported by a decrease in cell cycle regulatory protein cyclin D1 and an increase in apoptosis marker poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase in combination therapy compared with paclitaxel and UVB irradiation alone. Moreover, combination therapy sensitizes the paclitaxel resistance MCF-7/PTX and MDA-MB-231/PTX. ZD6474 along with paclitaxel or radiation can therefore be used for treatment in drug-insensitive advanced breast cancers

Humoral and cytokine response elicited during immunisation with recombinant Immune Mapped protein-1 (EtIMP-1) and oocysts of Eimeria tenella

Eimeria tenella, the causative agent of caecal coccidiosis, is a pathogenic gut dwelling protozoan which can cause severe morbidity and mortality in farmed chickens. Immune mapped protein-1 (IMP-1) has been identified as an anticoccidial vaccine candidate; in the present study allelic polymorphism was assessed across the IMP-1 coding sequence in E. tenella isolates from four countries and compared with the UK reference Houghton strain. Nucleotide diversity was low, limited to expansion/contraction of a CAG triplet repeat and five substitutions, three of which were non-synonymous. The EtIMP-1 coding sequence from a cloned Indian E. tenella isolate was expressed in E. coli and purified as a His-tagged thioredoxin fusion protein. An in-vivo vaccination and challenge trial was conducted to test the vaccine potential of recombinant EtIMP-1 (rEtIMP-1) and to compare post-vaccination immune responses of chickens to those stimulated by live oocyst infection. Following challenge, parasite replication measured using quantitative PCR was significantly reduced in chickens that had been vaccinated with rEtIMP-1 (rIC group; 67% reduction compared to UC or unimmunised controls; 79% reduction compared to rTC group or recombinant thioredoxin mock-immunised controls, p < 0.05), or the birds vaccinated by infection with oocysts (OC group, 90% compared to unimmunised controls). Chickens vaccinated with oocysts (OC) had significantly higher levels of interferon gamma in their serum post-challenge, compared to rEtIMP-1 vaccinated birds (rIC). Conversely rEtIMP-1 (rIC) vaccinated birds had significantly higher antigen specific serum IgY responses, correlating with higher serum IL-4 (both p < 0.05)

RVB gauge theory and the Topological degeneracy in the Honeycomb Kitaev model

We relate the Z2_2 gauge theory formalism of the Kitaev model to the SU(2) gauge theory of the resonating valence bond (RVB) physics. Further, we reformulate a known Jordan-Wigner transformation of Kitaev model on a torus in a general way that shows that it can be thought of as a Z2_2 gauge fixing procedure. The conserved quantities simplify in terms of the gauge invariant Jordan-Wigner fermions, enabling us to construct exact eigen states and calculate physical quantities. We calculate the fermionic spectrum for flux free sector for different gauge field configurations and show that the ground state is four-fold degenerate on a torus in thermodynamic limit. Further on a torus we construct four mutually anti-commuting operators which enable us to prove that all eigenstates of this model are four fold degenerate in thermodynamic limit.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures.
