A triad of pastoral leadership for congregational health and well-being: Leader, manager and servant in a shared and equipping ministry

    Get PDF
That ministry is to be given back to the laity is a laudable proposition. However, the level of development in many township and village communities is still such that a strong leadership and management facilitation role is demanded of the pastor. In such contexts, the pastor is also the only one who is always available for church tasks. The point of departure of this article was that the pastor is primarily a facilitator who assumes the tasks of a leader, a manager and a servant. The Trinitarian office of Christ is taken as model. Christian leadership, as discussed from a systems perspective, is seen as enabling rather than hegemonic. The pastor fulfils the seven leadership functions in order to equip the saints for their Christian service. Church management is redefined as a process which takes place in meaningful collaboration with others, over against the objectification found in conventional definitions which focus on ‘getting things done through people’. This article discussed servant leadership and service provision as the central purpose of Christian leadership. Keywords: triad of pastoral leadership; congregational health and well-being; leadership; management; facilitation; servant leadershi

Mediated representations of violence against women (VAW) in the South African public broadcasting service: a study of cognitive effects of gendered communication

    Get PDF
This research seeks to investigate, in an explanatory nature, how South Africa’s broadcast media represents the narrative of gender equality amid the culture of violence against women (VAW) within this society. Feminist scholars have over the years seen the emergence of work concerned with the representation of gender with specific focus on women. The crucial argument is that gender politics are central to the project of representation. In a way representations of women, mostly negative, such as domesticated roles, submissiveness and powerlessness have encouraged this inquiry. The South African Broadcasting Service (SABC), owing to its wide audience reach, has been a key catalyst for the progression and limitations regarding the representation of women. The South African society has been deeply and consistently exposed to the public broadcaster as it has entrenched itself in the living rooms of the nation and created an intimate resonance through daily soap operas that seek to illuminate the populace’s lived experiences. However, dramas and soap operas have not been a passive agent of entertainment. It is either they are a direct expression of social reality or an actual distortion of that reality. They have psychological and social weavings that inform how we attach meaning to the world, each other, and our own selfhood. Thus, in a country spotlighted for Violence Against Women (VAW) and femicide, this study, using four soap operas and three tv dramas investigates how the SABC represents women in its programming content. This qualitative study employs the critical political economy of the media (CPEM) as its theoretical framework to explore gendered dimensions of texts in television representation. Further, an inquisition of gendered production is drawn from Stuart Hall’s encoding/decoding model as the interpretive framework that unpacks the process of representation both at the production/encoding of texts by producers and decoding/consumption by the audiences to map out the true effects.M.A. (Communication Science)Communication Scienc

Abstracts in English, Sotho and ZuluThe purpose of this research was to identify critical factors necessary for the implementation of a trusted repository for managing research data. A research data survey was conducted with 36 Information professionals at the NRF to investigate the state of readiness at the organisation for implementing the repository. According to the survey results a need was identified for storage and preservation of student data, databases and reports managed by the Information professionals. Other research data types that are mostly generated were Websites, Databases and manuals that require secure storage. The study further revealed the need for metadata training in the organisation as an important component for research data preservation. More than half of the Information professionals revealed that their metadata is system generated and there is minimum involvement required from them. Through the review of the existing literature and the NRF data survey, the researcher was able to bring forward recommendations that can be applied for improvement of preservation services. Recommendations made include that professionals should be trained, there should be policy development and review of existing research data within the organisation. Secure storage mediums should be an investment for the organisation based on the research data generated through research activities and managed by the NRF professionals.Morero oa lipatlisiso tsena e ne e le ho supa lintlha tsa bohlokoa tse hlokahalang bakeng sa ho kenya tsebetsong polokelo e tsepahalang ea taolo ea data ea lipatlisiso. Food Waste Behavior of Young Fast-food Consumers in the Philippines

    Get PDF
The foodservice industry is considered to be one of the largest and most profitable sectors in the Philippine economy. Literature reveals that one of the pressing and urgent concerns of foodservice outlets is food waste. Food waste is defined as any food appropriate and intended for human consumption being discarded, whether or not it is kept beyond its expiry date or left to spoil. Economically speaking, it impacts the cost firms incur in disposing food waste and has serious environmental and social implications. This study investigates the out-of-home food waste behavior of young consumers within the context of the Philippine fast-food industry. Given the local, regional, and global presence of the industry, studying food waste behavior contributes to the call for sustainability. It is beneficial to fast-food management and industry by providing insights on food waste behavior of young consumers. Data from a sample of 145 college students were gathered and analyzed using relevant variables from the consumer food waste model and partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) algorithm. Analyses reveal that awareness and social norms have a significant influence on ordering fast-food as mediated by the consumer’s motivation to avoid or reduce food waste. Mainly, the results suggest that management can shape the ordering behavior of young consumers by strengthening their motivation through individual consumer awareness campaigns and peer group behavior. None of the paths leading from attitude, awareness, and social norm to food consumption were significant. It can thus be concluded that, per the results of this study, management intervention at the point of consumption may no longer be useful in mitigating food waste. The final and critical point at which management may intervene to influence consumer behavior is the in-store ordering stage. We recommend that future studies explore additional constructs that improve the prediction power and fit of the model. Future research can expound on the social circle of the consumer and local values, beliefs, and practices that contribute to sustainable food consumption

Adoption of e-banking amongst small, micro and medium enterprises in the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to examine the level of adoption, usage and factors that influence the adoption of electronic banking (e-banking) by small, micro and medium enterprises (SMMEs) listed in the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality (CTMM). Despite efforts by commercial banks to promote e-banking (internet and cell phone banking) to its customers, the adoption rate for internet and cell phone banking appears to be low. Based on the literature reviewed, the SMME sector has been widely excluded from the formal banking services. It is also observed that e-banking can enable SMMEs to grow and enter international markets. Technology acceptance model (TAM) integrated with perceived risk theory (PRT) was used to investigate factors that influence adoption and usage of e-banking. The study followed a quantitative research approach. Respondents were selected using simple random sampling technique. A structured survey questionnaire was used to collect the data. The survey was conducted on 160 SMMEs in the CTMM with the assistance of fieldworkers. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, exploratory factor analysis (EFA), Pearson’s bivariate correlation, and multiple regression. The results revealed that perceived ease of use had a significant positive influence on the attitude towards e-banking. Perceived usefulness had a positive but insignificant influence on the attitude towards e-banking. Security risk was the only perceived risk dimension that had a significant negative influence on attitude towards e-banking. However, financial risk, privacy risk, performance risk and social risk had a positive and insignificant influence on attitude towards e-banking. It was envisaged that this study will enable banks to develop strategies that are aimed at increasing their SMME market share.M. Com. (Finance)Finance, Risk management and Bankin

Gratitude as a Christian lifestyle: An Afro-reformed theological perspective

    Get PDF
31 October 2017 marked the 500th anniversary of the birth of the Reformation in Germany, West Europe. One of the most important legacies of the Reformation is the teaching concerning God’s gracious salvation, received and appropriated only through faith in Christ Jesus our Saviour. The current article seeks to focus on reflection on gratitude as a Christian lifestyle in response to God’s redemption. The article reflects on gratitude as recognition account, highlighting the importance of gratitude as a Christian virtue, as a socioreligious phenomenon, and its importance in human happiness and well-being. This, as it shaped the life of Christians, is found especially in the African continent, in whose traditional life, gratitude was ubiquitous, known and practised even before conversion to the Protestant religion. The article also briefly highlights the fact that a relaxed attitude regarding the teaching on gratitude could result in Sunday or nominal Christianity and the demise of prophetic Christianity. Some concluding thoughts regarding gratitude are shared

This article forms part of a special collection titled 'Maranatha Reformed Church of Christ Centenary Celebration, sub-edited by Matsobane Manala (University of South Africa)'.DATA AVAILABITY STATEMENT: Data sharing is not applicable to this article as no new data were created or analysed in this article. This article had as a point of departure, the fact that the most important component of church life and work, was its members, whose edification and enablement were of vital importance. A background was proffered to help the reader acquaint themselves with the church circumstances. An important question in this article was, what would revive and sustain the growth momentum in the 100-year-old plus Maranatha Reformed Church of Christ (MRCC), going forward? I identified the leader’s key performance area as serving God and those who needed his or her gifts, leadership and purpose. This article followed a literary research approach in which various literary sources, especially on the MRCC, servant leadership, practical theology, and cell groups were studied. The aim was to find a solution to the problem of membership decline in this church. Some exploration, interpretation, discernment and discovery was done and achieved, leading to the required solution. A brief definition and discussion of the act of leading through serving and of cell groups were presented. It further, expressed the need to establish and utilise cell groups, as a necessary tool through which the MRCC could attain and sustain needed growth. Having discussed servant leadership, cell groups and their importance, I drew some conclusions. CONTRIBUTION: This article makes a meaningful contribution to the MRCC, other mainline churches and church growth theoretical studies, by uncovering the resilience and dynamism for church growth residing in servant leadership principles and practices and the utilisation of cell groups.https://hts.org.za/index.php/htsPractical TheologyNon
