    Antitrust and (Foreign) Innovation: Evidence from the Xerox Case

    How does antitrust enforcement against patent-based monopolies affect innovation? I address this question by empirically studying the US antitrust case against Xerox, the monopolist in the market for plain-paper copiers. In 1975, Xerox was ordered to license all its copier-technology patents in the US and abroad. I show that this promoted innovation by other firms in the copier industry, measured by a disproportionate increase in patenting in technologies where Xerox patents became available for licensing. This positive effect is driven by increased innovation by Japanese competitors. They started developing smaller desktop copiers and their innovation became more diverse

    Imperfect Price Information, Market Power, and Tax Pass-Through

    Pass-through determines how consumers respond to taxes. We investigate the impact of imperfect price information on pass-through of commodity taxes. Our theoretical model predicts that the pass-through rate increases with the share of well-informed consumers. Pass-through is higher for the minimum price, paid by well-informed consumers, than for the average price, paid by uninformed consumers. Moreover, pass-through to the average price is non-monotonic with respect to the number of sellers. An empirical analysis of multiple recent tax changes in the German and French retail fuel markets confirms our theoretical predictions. Our results have implications for tax policy and shed light on the relative effectiveness of Pigouvian taxes versus regulation

    C2M: Configurable Chemical Middleware

    One of the vexing problems that besets concurrent use of multiple, heterogeneous resources is format multiplicity. C2M aims to equip scientists with a wrapper generator on their desktop. The wrapper generator can build wrappers, or converters that can convert data from or into different formats, from a high-level description of the formats. The language in which such a high-level description is expressed is easy enough for scientists to be able to write format descriptions at minimal cost. In C2M, wrappers and documentation for human reading are automatically obtained from the same user-supplied specifications. Initial experiments demonstrate that the idea can, indeed, lead to the advent of usergoverned wrapper generators. Future research will consolidate the code and extend the approach to a realistic variety of formats

    Inhaled nitric oxide suppresses neuroinflammation in experimental ischemic stroke

    Ischemic stroke is a major global health issue and characterized by acute vascular dysfunction and subsequent neuroinflammation. However, the relationship between these processes remains elusive. In the current study, we investigated whether alleviating vascular dysfunction by restoring vascular nitric oxide (NO) reduces post-stroke inflammation. Mice were subjected to experimental stroke and received inhaled NO (iNO;50 ppm) after reperfusion. iNO normalized vascular cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) levels, reduced the elevated expression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), and returned leukocyte adhesion to baseline levels. Reduction of vascular pathology significantly reduced the inflammatory cytokines interleukin-1 beta (Il-1 beta), interleukin-6 (Il-6), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), within the brain parenchyma. These findings suggest that vascular dysfunction is responsible for leukocyte adhesion and that these processes drive parenchymal inflammation. Reversing vascular dysfunction may therefore emerge as a novel approach to diminish neuroinflammation after ischemic stroke and possibly other ischemic disorders

    RS-FISH: precise, interactive, fast, and scalable FISH spot detection

    Fluorescent in-situ hybridization (FISH)-based methods extract spatially resolved genetic and epigenetic information from biological samples by detecting fluorescent spots in microscopy images, an often challenging task. We present Radial Symmetry-FISH (RS-FISH), an accurate, fast, and user-friendly software for spot detection in two- and three-dimensional images. RS-FISH offers interactive parameter tuning and readily scales to large datasets and image volumes of cleared or expanded samples using distributed processing on workstations, clusters, or the cloud. RS-FISH maintains high detection accuracy and low localization error across a wide range of signal-to-noise ratios, a key feature for single-molecule FISH, spatial transcriptomics, or spatial genomics applications
