    Rain-Fed Farming System at a Crossroads in Semi-Arid Areas of Tanzania: What Roles do Climate Variability and Change Play?

    Positive changes, like adopting drought resistant crop varieties, in the rain-fed farming system (RFFS) in response to climate variability and change enhance system’s ability to support people’s living as opposed to negative changes, like lack of pastures, which put the system at risk of failure in supporting the living. Using participatory rural appraisal (PRA) and household survey, this paper examined the roles of climate variability and change in triggering changes in RFFS. Specifically, the paper: (i) assessed dominant crop and livestock farming system; (ii) assessed the change element of crop and livestock production systems; and (iii) examined factors for the changes in RFFS. A random sample of 388 households was used. Qualitative data analysis was done through content analysis. Binary logistic regression was used to assess factors that explain changes on RFFS. The results showed that dominant crops were different in each village. Secondly, some changes in crop varieties and in livestock grazing arrangements were noted in response to climate variability and change. Unlike the hypothesis (P>0.05), the results demonstrated that warming (ß = -10.61, Wald = 36.26, P ? 0.001) showed highest significant impact on likelihood of adopting new crop varieties relative to other factors. Similarly, drought (ß = 2.16, Wald = 6.82, P ? 0.009) showed highest impact on the likelihood of changing a grazing place. Yet, the changes were constrained by factors like natural resources protective policies, failure of crop varieties to withstand warming and drought, and poor land use management. Therefore, the RFFS was at a crossroads with implications on system sustainability and livelihoods. The government and private interventions should support farmers and agro-pastoralists to manage risks related to the changes in RFFS in response to climate variability and change.     Exploring the relationship between chronic undernutrition and asymptomatic malaria in Ghanaian children

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>A moderate association has been found between asymptomatic parasitaemia and undernutrition. However, additional investigation using the gold standard for asymptomatic parasitaemia confirmation, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), is needed to validate this association. Anthropometric measurements and blood samples from children less than five years of age in a rural Ghanaian community were used to determine if an association exists between chronic undernutrition and PCR-confirmed cases of asymptomatic malaria.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This was a descriptive cross-sectional study of 214 children less than five years of age from a community near Kumasi, Ghana. Blood samples and anthropometric measurements from these children were collected during physical examinations conducted in January 2007 by partners of the Barekuma Collaborative Community Development Programme.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Findings from the logistic model predicting the odds of asymptomatic malaria indicate that children who experienced mild, moderate or severe stunting were not more likely to have asymptomatic malaria than children who were not stunted. Children experiencing anaemia had an increased likelihood (OR = 4.15; 95% CI: 1.92, 8.98) of asymptomatic malaria. Similarly, increased spleen size, which was measured by ultrasound, was also associated with asymptomatic malaria (OR = 2.17; 95% CI: 1.44, 3.28). Fast breathing, sex of the child, and age of the child were not significantly associated with the asymptomatic malaria.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>No significant association between chronic undernutrition and presence of asymptomatic malaria was found. Children who experience anaemia and children who have splenomegaly are more likely to present asymptomatic malaria. Programmes aimed at addressing malaria should continue to include nutritional components, especially components that address anaemia.</p

    Yield and mushroom size of Pleurotus ostreatus grown on rice straw basal substrate mixed and supplemented with various crop residues

    Journal of Animal & Plant Sciences, 2011. Vol. 10, Issue 1: 1211- 1218.Two crops of Pleurotus ostreatus were grown on rice straw as the basal substrate. In crop I, rice straw was mixed at spawning with 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% of banana leaves or Leucaena leucocephala or maize bran or maize cobs. In crop II, rice straw was supplemented at spawning with 0%, 1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, and 5% of sunflower or cotton seed cake. Mushroom yield (1,040.0 g) and Biological efficiency (BE) (98.5%) were greater on a 50/50 mixture of rice straw and banana leaves. Rice straw supplemented with 2% sunflower seed hulls (yield 1,087.5 g, BE 103.3%) gave similar yield and BE to rice straw supplemented with 2% cotton seed hulls (yield 1,073.8 g, BE 101.8%), and were significantly greater than (p < 0.001) other supplement ratios. By comparison, mushroom yield on banana leaves were 786.5 g, on rice straw were 582.5 g, on Leucaena leucocephala were 534.5 g, on maize cobs were 468.5 g, on rice bran were 406.0 g and on maize bran were 305.3 g. On the other hand, oyster mushroom contains essential nutritional elements comparable to leafy vegetables. Objectives: The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of substrate types and substrate containers on yield, biological efficiency, size and solid content of oyster mushroom Pleurotus ostreatus; and to compare mineral content of mushrooms produced from different types of substrates to common leafy vegetables. Methodology and results: Substrate containers: clear plastic bags, re-usable substrate containers (RSC), coloured plastic bags, shelved clear plastic bags and substrates: banana leaves, rice straws and maize cobs were used to grow oyster mushrooms. The experiment was carried out in complete randomized block design (CRBD) in a factorial arrangement. The mineral content of oyster mushroom grown on rice straws, Leucaena leucocophala, sorghum grains, banana leaves and maize cobs substrates were compared in a CRBD to those of pumpkin leaves (Curcubita spp.), narrow-leaved African night shade (Solanum villosum), broad-leaved African night shade (Solanum scabrum), cowpea leaves (Vigna unguiculata), cabbage (Brassica spp.), sweet potato leaves (Ipomea batatas), amaranth (Amaranthus spp.) and cassava leaves (Manihot esculentus L.). Mushroom yields and BE in RSC were comparable to non-RSC. The highest yields (1,116.25 g/g) and BE (105.75%) were produced from rice straws substrate in coloured bags followed by RSC (yield 694.6 g/g, BE 65.6%). Mushroom solids content (19.4%) was highest from banana leaves substrates. The highest Fe, Zn, Se and Ca were obtained from amaranth, oyster mushrooms produced from rice straws, narrow- and broad-leaves African nightshade and pumpkin leaves respectively. Conclusion and application of results: The utilization of RSC to produce oyster mushrooms protects the environment from disposed plastic bags which are non-biodegradable and if burned may cause ill-health effect to the human. Additional research is needed to specify quality of material to be used in the manufacture of RSC and specifications to suit cultivation of oyster mushrooms. In addition, consumption of oyster mushrooms in combination with other vegetables complements availability of various essential dietary elements such as Fe, Zn, Se and Ca

    Nutritional quality and utilization of local and improved cowpea varieties in some Regions in Tanzania

    Cowpeas are grown for their leaves and grains both of which are used as relish or side dishes together with the staple food. Little information is available on the nutritional quality of local and improved cowpea varieties grown in Tanzania as well as the recipes in which they are ingredients. This study was done to investigate cowpea utilization in Iringa and Dodoma regions of Tanzania. A cross-sectional survey was carried out where a total of 517 farmers were interviewed using a pre-tested structured questionnaire. Proximate and mineral composition of different varieties of cowpea grains and leaves were determined using standard AOAC methods. More than half of the households interviewed consumed cowpeas in one or more forms. Most cowpea recipes included them as relish being eaten with rice or stiff porridge (ugali), a mixture of dehulled maize and cowpea grains (kande) and cowpea buns (bagia). Improved cowpea varieties had relatively higher fat content ranging from 8 to 11.2% compared to local varieties (5.4%). Local cowpea grains had higher levels of calcium varying between 958.1 and 992.4 mg/kg than dehulled cowpea (360 to 364 mg/kg) and cowpea flour (303 to 311 mg/kg). Zinc ranged from 32.6 to 31.5 mg/kg, while iron content ranged from 27.6 to 28.9 mg/kg. Fresh cowpea leaves had the highest levels of minerals, with calcium varying between 1800.6 and 1809.6 mg/kg, zinc between 36.1 and 36.0 mg/kg and iron between 497.0 and 499.5 mg/kg. The improved cowpea varieties, IT99K-7212-2-1 (23.8 mg/kg) and IT96D-733 (21.2 mg/kg) had the highest iron content. IT99K-7-21-2-2-1 (32.2 mg/kg) and IT97K499-38 (28.3 mg/kg) had the highest zinc concentration. The bagia (cowpea buns), prepared in Dodoma had higher mineral composition, calcium (893mg/kg), zinc (13.7 mg/kg) and iron (16.3 mg/kg) compared to those prepared in Iringa; calcium (32.6mg/kg), zinc (4.96 mg/kg) and iron (5.2 mg/kg). The cowpea daily per capita consumption for the majority of the households surveyed ranged from 41 to 200 gm. The contribution of micro and macro nutrients is significant for both developed lines and local varieties but with leaves having greater mineral content than the grains; hence, promotion of consumption of the leaves alongside the grains would be of nutritional advantage. Additionally, farmers should be encouraged to plant the higher yielding cowpea varieties and preferred local varieties

    Effect of germination and autoclaving of sprouted finger millet and kidney beans on cyanide content

    Tanzania Journal of Health Research, 2010; 12 (4)Cyanide contents of locally purchased brown finger millet (Eleusine corocana L. Gaertner) and brown speckled kidney bean seeds (Phaseolus vulgaries var. Rose Coco) were determined using raw, germinated and autoclaved samples. The aim was to establish the extent of cyanide content increase resulting from the germination process and the effectiveness of the autoclaving process on the reduction of cyanide levels in the samples, for safety considerations. Autoclaving was carried out at 121°C for 20 minutes. It was found that germination increased the cyanide content by 2.11 to 2.14 fold in finger millet for laboratory processed samples. In the case of kidney beans the increment was 1.76 to 1.77 fold for laboratory samples. The increments for field processed samples were in the same range as those for laboratory samples. Autoclaving reduced the cyanide content to between 61.8 and 65.9 % of the original raw contents for finger millet and between 56.6 to 57.8% in the case of kidney beans. The corresponding reductions for field samples were also found to be within the same ranges as the laboratory processed samples.
