Humanising higher education through a culturally responsive curriculum

    Get PDF
During the student protests in South Africa, students indicated that they were still taught irrelevant knowledge after 25 years of independence. The decolonisation of the curriculum was one of the demands of the Fees-Must-Fall protests. The purpose of this chapter is to join the debate by determining the way in which the higher education curriculum can be humanised by making it culturally responsive. This was a qualitative study and the sample included six academics selected from the programme of the London International Conference on Education (LICE‐2018) and World Congress on Special Needs Education held from 10 to 13 December 2018 at Cambridge, UK. Presenters whose papers were related to the contextualisation of the curriculum were targeted. An e-mail requesting a 60-minute interview was sent to ten of them. Only five agreed to participate. The participants cited initiatives by Tanzanians (Ujamaa) and Zimbabweans (unhu) to promote culturally responsive education. This study makes recommendations that include education that encourages self-reliance

This article sought to investigate the implementation of strategies to realise the decoloniality of the Comparative and International Education (CIE) curriculum in South African higher education. This is a qualitative study in which the participants were selected from CIE senior lecturers and students who are registered for the CIE module. Data was collected from four senior lecturers and nine students who were identified using multi-stage sampling. Data pertaining to the experiences of these academics and students were collected by semi-structured interviews. The study revealed numerous decolonial challenges, including people valuing the Western system more than their own system and a reluctance to move out of their comfort zone. Valuable information was received from the participants suggesting strategies to realise the decoloniality of the CIE curriculum in South African higher education. Based on the suggestions made by participants, this study recommends ways in which to implement strategies of the decoloniality of the CIE curriculum

Research report submitted to Wits School of Governance in 25% fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Management in Public and Development, 2016The research investigated the high rate of road traffic accidents and the high mortality rate on the Moloto road in the western region popularly known as the Nkangala region of Mpumalanga province. The purpose of the research was to explore suggestions from the stakeholders on how to reduce road traffic accidents on the Moloto road. The research also aimed at discussing the relationship between the road traffic accidents and the road congestion. The research attempted to find the interventions suggested by stakeholders on how to reduce road traffic accidents on the Moloto road. The unprecedented number of road accidents on the Moloto road is a serious concern for both government and road users. In 2012 alone, 890 traffic accidents were recorded on the Moloto road. This research found that the majority of these accidents were caused by human behaviour such as reckless driving, over speeding, drinking and driving. The relative invisibility of traffic officials on the Moloto Road partly explains why road users engage in such behaviours. Increased visibility of traffic officials may encourage change in road user behaviour and help reduce the number of road traffic accidents on the Moloto Road. Congestion as one of the major causes of road traffic accidents can be solved by widening the Moloto road. Congestion can also be dealt with through the development of the Moloto rail corridor which is seen as a tool to remove vehicles on the Moloto road. It is also realised that both the government and the road users can play an important role in the reduction of road traffic accidents on the Moloto road. The government must develop infrastructure and the road users must obey the rules of the road. The sampling method for this qualitative case study was purposive sampling. The selection of respondents was done within stakeholders of the Moloto Road. Collection of data was done on the individuals representing their organisations. Data was analysed according to the accepted procedures for qualitative data processing.XL201

Text in EnglishSpecially prepared 2-amino-5-bromo-3-iodoacetophenone and 5-bromo-2-hydroxy-3 iodoacetophenone were subjected to Claisen-Schmidt aldol condensation with benzaldehyde derivatives followed by sequential and/or one-pot palladium catalyzed Sonogashira cross coupling and heteroannulation of the 3-alkynylated intermediates to afford indole-chalcones and benzofuran-chalcones, respectively. The indole-chalcones derivatives were, in turn, subjected to trifluoroacetic anhydride in tetrahydrofuran under reflux to afford the corresponding 3-trifluoroacetyl substituted indole-chalcone derivatives. The coupling constant values (Jtrans) of about 16.0 Hz for the chalcone derivatives corresponding to the vinylic protons confirmed the trans geometry of the α,β-unsaturated carbonyl framework in all the cases. Their trans geometry of the chalcone derivatives was further confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses. Further structural elaboration of the ambident electrophilic α,β unsaturated carbonyl (chalcone) moiety of the indole-chalcones and the analogous benzofuran chalcones with 2-aminothiophenol afforded novel benzothiezapine-appended indole and benzofuran hybrids, respectively. Sonogashira cross-coupling of 5-bromo-2-hydroxy-3 iodoacetophenone with terminal acetylenes followed by heteroannulation of the intermediate 3-alkynylated 5-bromo-2-hydroxyacetophenones afforded the corresponding 7-acetyl-2-aryl-5-bromobenzofurans in a single-pot operation. The oximes derived from the 7-acetyl–substituted 2-aryl-5-bromobenzofurans were subjected to Beckmann rearrangement with triflic acid in acetonitrile under reflux. We isolated the corresponding 7-amino-2-aryl-5 bromobenzofuran derivatives formed from hydrolysis in situ of the intermediate 7-acetamide 2-aryl-5-bromobenzofurans. Amino-dechlorination of the 4-chloroquinazoline derivatives with the 7-aminobenzofurans afforded novel benzofuran 4-aminoquinazoline hybrids. The prepared compounds were characterized using a combination of nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR & 13C-NMR including 19F-NMR), infrared (IR) and mass spectroscopic techniques complemented with single crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses and/or density functional (DFT) method. The benzofuran-chalcone 203a–y derivatives were evaluated for anti-growth effect against the breast cancer (MCF-7) cell line by the MTT cell viability assay. Their mode of cancer cell death (apoptosis versus necrosis) was detected by Annexin V-Cy3 SYTOX staining and caspase-3 activation. The most cytotoxic compounds 203i and 203o were also evaluated for potential to inhibit tubulin polymerization and/or epidermal growth factor receptor-tyrosine kinase (EGFR-TK) phosphorylation. The experimental results were complemented with theoretical data from molecular docking into ATP binding site of the EGFR and colchicine binding site of tubulin, respectively. The benzofuran–4-aminoquinazoline hybrids 215a–j, on the other hand, were evaluated for antiproliferative propeties in vitro against the human lung cancer (A549), epithelial colorectal adenocarcinoma (Caco-2) and hepatocellular carcinoma (C3A) cell lines. The benzofuran-aminoquinazoline hybrids were also evaluated for potential to induce apoptosis and for their capability to inhibit EGFR-TK phosphorylation complemented with molecular docking (in silico) into the ATP binding site of EGFR. Mechanistic studies demonstrated that the benzofuran-appended aminoquinazoline hybrids 215d and 215j induced apoptosis via activation of caspase-3 pathway. Moreover, compounds 215d and 215j exhibited significant and moderate inhibitory effects against EGFR (IC50 = 29.3 nM and 61.5 nM, respectively) when compared to Gefitinib (IC50 = 33.1 nM). Molecular docking of compounds 215 into EGFR-TK active site suggested that they bind to the region of EGFR like Gefitinib does.ChemistryD. Phil. (Chemistry

A Novel Synthesis of Cyclic and Acyclic 3-Alkenoic Acids via Ionization/Elimination of β-Lactones

    Get PDF
Exposure of spiro β-lactones and 3-substituted 4,4-dialkyl oxetan-2-ones to magnesium bromide in diethyl ether solvent resulted in the smooth generation of β,γ-unsaturated acid derivatives in high yield and isomeric purity. It is believed that this reaction occurs via the formation of a stable tertiary carbocation at the β-carbon resulting from cleavage of the carbon-oxygen sigma bond due to the complexation of magnesium cation with the ring oxygen atom. Rapid loss of an adjacent proton then furnishes the unsaturated acids. The β-lactone precursors were prepared by the dehydration of β-hydroxy acid derivatives (obtained from the condensation of ketones with acetic acid dianions) employing benzenesulfonyl chloride in pyridine solvent. Since this synthetic method offers ready access to a wide range of β,γ-unsaturated acids which were previously difficult to obtain, a detailed synthetic methodology and suggestions pertaining to the reaction mechanism are of prime interest and are discussed in detail

The relevance of indigenous technology in curriculum 2005/RNCS with special reference to the technology learning area

    Get PDF
In this article it is argued that indigenous technology with its long history cannot be ignored and should be as signed a more prominent place in the Technology Learning Area (TLA) within Curriculum 2005/RNCS Grades R – 9.2 The argument is based on the findings of a study in which the relevance of indigenous technology in the TLA curriculum was investigated. The findings not only pointed to the long history of indigenous technology, but also evidenced the continued use of such technology among indigenous people, especially in the rural contexts. The findings in the study are suggestive of an enhanced recognition of indigenous technology in the TLA curriculum. Therefore, informed by the findings, the authors pose certain recommendations pertaining to the TLA curriculum. The article has as secondary purpose creation of awareness of, and sensitivity for, the cultural heritage of indigenous people in South Africa and context-specific community needs which can be recognised and addressed in learning areas such as the TLA.South African Journal of Education Vol. 26 (4) 2006: pp. 501-51

Fallism as decoloniality : towards a decolonised school history curriculum in post-colonial-apartheid South Africa

    Get PDF
The 2015/16 student protests in South Africa, dubbed #MustFall protests, signalled a historic moment in the country’s post-colonial-apartheid history in which student-worker collaborations called for the decolonising of the university and its Eurocentric curriculum and, by extension, basic education and its Eurocentric curriculum too. Since then, there have emerged two dominant narratives of decolonisation in South Africa. The first is what I call a nativist delinking approach that recentres decolonial and Africa-centeredness discourses, ontologies, and epistemologies relatively separate from Euro-north and American-centric ones. The second is a broader, inclusive approach to decolonisation, which this study adopts. However, both these dominant narratives fail to counter much of the knowledge blindness informed by a false dichotomy advanced by positivist absolutism and constructive relativism that defines the sociology of education, including many of the calls for decolonisation. Thus, through a decolonial conceptual framework and Karl Maton’s Epistemic-Pedagogic Device as a theoretical framework, fallism as decoloniality is adopted in this study to propose ways to transcend the Eurocentrism that characterises the current school history curriculum in South Africa, as well as the nativist and narrow provincialism of knowledge. Equally, an argument is made for the advancement of an inclusive decolonial project that is concerned with relations within knowledge and curriculum and their intrinsic structureshttps://upjournals.up.ac.za/index.php/yesterday_and_today/article/view/3745pm202

Doctoral Degree. University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban.Competitive Intelligence Embeddedness (CIE) and organisational performance studies have used various techniques and methods to explain the relationships between variables. To address this limitation in the body of knowledge, the objective of this study was to apply PLS-SEM and build a model that explained and identified the critical factors affecting CIE in the SA life insurance environment. This study was deductive and based on a non-experimental research design. Quantitative research methods and descriptive design with the positivist research paradigm were employed. The researcher developed a cross-sectional quantitative approach using smart-PLS version 3.2.7. Data were collected from 276 respondents, and the response rate was 72%. Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) was applied to estimate the proposed theoretical model. This model was examined from an explanatory-predictive perspective and exhibited a high out-of-sample predictive power. Furthermore, this study’s measurement model was confirmed to be valid and reliable and acceptable. The findings of this study revealed that the R² value of the model was scored at 0.615, 0.506, and 0.735, which meant that the fourteen exogenous latent constructs collectively explained 61.5%, 50.60%, and 73.50% of the variance CIE, CS, and OP respectively. The model’s Goodness-of-Fit measured by SRMR and RMS_theta was 0.55 and 0.101 within the acceptable benchmark. The hypothesis validated that CIE was supported by employees, strategy, information usefulness, and information providers. Also, CIE, employee role clarity, and customer satisfaction aided organisational performance. This study showed that CIE is vital in SA life assurance companies because of its close association with customer satisfaction and organisational performance. Moreover, this study highlighted that the success of CIE in SA life assurance companies is influenced by the leadership style, technological readiness of the organisation, corporate culture and the accuracy, and use of information for strategic decision-making. Future research should consider a similar study in other African countries and globally to find similarities in embedding CI in organisations. The future investigation should also consider short-term insurance and other industries to test this study’s conceptual model

The interplay between emotional labour and work-family balance among black women nurses in Johannesburg

    Get PDF
Abstract: Nurses are essential to health care system in South Africa. They ensure that patients receive healing through the provision of health care. Nurses working in the South African public health care system face many challenges including poor practice environments, poor working conditions, lack of resources and staff shortages. Additionally, they are exposed to diseases and they experience traumatic events at work, for example the death of patients. As a result, nurses experience emotional exhaustion more than other professions. Along with dealing with the emotional encounters they experience at work nurses have families who also demand emotional support from them as well. These work and home demands require nurses to strike a difficult work life balance. Using a qualitative approach, this study aimed to understand the interplay between emotional labour and work family balance among Black women nurses in Johannesburg. The study findings indicate that emotional labour impacts on nurses’ ability to deal with home related stresses and leads to an imbalance as work drains their ability effectively deal with family demands. In the same view, this lack of balance is visible in their quality of life and their low job satisfaction and 'ineffective' patient care...M.A. (Social Science

Technology education and curriculum 2005 : staff development through INSET

    Get PDF
Curriculum 2005 together with its learning areas has been introduced in South Africa in 1998. All learning areas, except Technology Learning Area, are not new. Technology is growing so rapidly that it gives so many challenges to people. These challenges include making technology part of our curriculum, formulating and adapting technological solutions to problems people may experience. We have to ask ourselves what technology or Technology Education means. Therefore, this study provides the meaning and the rationale for Technology Education in our curriculum. This study also attempts to shed light on the form of training educators should attend for Technology Education. Although there are different methods of training, for example PRESET and INSET, this study concentrates on various forms of INSET. INSET is chosen because it is a means through which the present need for Technology Education educators can be solved. The percentage of educators involved in part-time study will increase in relation to the number in full-time education. The closing down of some of colleges of education in South Africa reduces the use of PRESET and increases INSET as a means of educator training. The advantages of using INSET instead of PRESET are provided in this study. The National Teacher Audit of 1995 has shown that the quality of INSET in South Africa is poor. In addition, it seems the present ad hoc way of running INSET will not cope with challenges of training educators for Curriculum 2005 and Technology Education. Normally, INSET is the prime strategy for addressing problems in PRESET. Unfortunately, INSET has to train educators for Technology Education (Technology Learning Area) which was never touched by PRESET before. For this reason, this study provides an INSET model, guidelines and recommendations to make the suggested model of INSET work successfully.Educational StudiesM. Ed. (Comparative Education
