A Concise Introduction to Perturbation Theory in Cosmology
We give a concise, self-contained introduction to perturbation theory in
cosmology at linear and second order, striking a balance between mathematical
rigour and usability. In particular we discuss gauge issues and the active and
passive approach to calculating gauge transformations. We also construct
gauge-invariant variables, including the second order tensor perturbation on

Does autonomic function link social position to coronary risk? The Whitehall II study.
BACKGROUND: Laboratory and clinical studies suggest that the autonomic nervous system responds to chronic behavioral and psychosocial stressors with adverse metabolic consequences and that this may explain the relation between low social position and high coronary risk. We sought to test this hypothesis in a healthy occupational cohort. METHODS AND RESULTS: This study comprised 2197 male civil servants 45 to 68 years of age in the Whitehall II study who were undergoing standardized assessments of social position (employment grade) and the psychosocial, behavioral, and metabolic risk factors for coronary disease previously found to be associated with low social position. Five-minute recordings of heart rate variability (HRV) were used to assess cardiac parasympathetic function (SD of N-N intervals and high-frequency power [0.15 to 0.40 Hz]) and the influence of sympathetic and parasympathetic function (low-frequency power [0.04 to 0.15 Hz]). Low employment grade was associated with low HRV (age-adjusted trend for each modality, P< or =0.02). Adverse behavioral factors (smoking, exercise, alcohol, and diet) and psychosocial factors (job control) showed age-adjusted associations with low HRV (P<0.03). The age-adjusted mean low-frequency power was 319 ms2 among those participants in the bottom tertile of job control compared with 379 ms2 in the other participants (P=0.004). HRV showed strong (P<0.001) linear associations with components of the metabolic syndrome (waist circumference, systolic blood pressure, HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and fasting and 2-hour postload glucose). The social gradient in prevalence of metabolic syndrome was explained statistically by adjustment for low-frequency power, behavioral factors, and job control. CONCLUSIONS: Chronically impaired autonomic function may link social position to different components of coronary risk in the general population
A Novel Pulsed Corona Discharge Reactor Based on Surface Streamers for NO Conversion from N2-O2 Mixture Gases
A novel pulsed corona discharge reactor is described which utilizes surface-plasma along insulating surfaces. The electrodes are comprised of a stainless steel wire anode of 150 µm diameter stretched along the surface of a glass sheet and two parallel aluminum strips as cathodes. An eight-stage Marx bank, which provides 60 ns, 40-45 kV monopolar pulses, was used to produce the surface streamers in nitrogen-oxygen mixtures at atmospheric pressure. With increasing oxygen content, the energy efficiency for NO2 and O3 synthesis was found to increase. The energy efficiency is almost the same for the surface-plasma and volume-plasma. However, the surface-plasma was found to be significantly more energy efficient than the volume-plasma for conversion of dilute NO in a feed gas containing 0-15% oxygen and with the balance being nitrogen. It is explained on the basis of surface-mediated reactions, the electric wind effect, and the diffusivity of the plasma which covers a larger fraction of the volume of the discharge gap as compared to volume-plasma. The surface-plasma reactor will be used to explore the treatment of NOx and hydrocarbons in diesel engine exhaust

Electrospray synthesis of PLGA TIPS microspheres
We successfully demonstrate the synthesis of polymer microspheres using a single electrospray source, and show their physical characterisation. Electrospray has proven to be a versatile method to manufacture particles, giving tight control over size with quasi-monodisperse size distributions. It is a liquid atomisation technique that generates a monodisperse population of highly charged liquid droplets over a broad size range (nanometres to tens of microns). The droplets contain liquid precursors for the in-flight synthesis of particles, and control over the trajectory of these droplets can be precisely manipulated with the use of electric fields to drive them to a grounded substrate. This study reports a method to synthesize poly(lactic-co-glycolic) acid (PLGA) microspheres using the electrospray and thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) techniques, followed by subsequent freeze-drying, for particle production. These microspheres are of interest as vehicles for controlled drug release systems
Abelian 2-form gauge theory: superfield formalism
We derive the off-shell nilpotent Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) and
anti-BRST symmetry transformations for {\it all} the fields of a free Abelian
2-form gauge theory by exploiting the geometrical superfield approach to BRST
formalism. The above four (3 + 1)-dimensional (4D) theory is considered on a
(4, 2)-dimensional supermanifold parameterized by the four even spacetime
variables x^\mu (with \mu = 0, 1, 2, 3) and a pair of odd Grassmannian
variables \theta and \bar\theta (with \theta^2 = \bar\theta^2 = 0, \theta
\bar\theta + \bar\theta \theta = 0). One of the salient features of our present
investigation is that the above nilpotent (anti-)BRST symmetry transformations
turn out to be absolutely anticommuting due to the presence of a Curci-Ferrari
(CF) type of restriction. The latter condition emerges due to the application
of our present superfield formalism. The actual CF condition, as is well-known,
is the hallmark of a 4D non-Abelian 1-form gauge theory. We demonstrate that
our present 4D Abelian 2-form gauge theory imbibes some of the key signatures
of the 4D non-Abelian 1-form gauge theory. We briefly comment on the
generalization of our supperfield approach to the case of Abelian 3-form gauge

Variational Mote Carlo Study of Flat Band Ferromagnetism -- Application to CeRh_3 B_2
A new mechanism for ferromagnetism in CeRh_3B_2 is proposed on the basis of
variational Monte Carlo results. In a one-dimensional Anderson lattice where
each 4f electron hybridizes with a ligand orbital between neighboring Ce sites,
ferromagnetism is stabilized due to a nearly flat band which is a mixture of
conduction and 4f electron states. Because of the strong spin-orbit interaction
in 4f electron states, and of considerable amount of hybridization in the
nearly flat band, the magnetic moments from 4f and conduction electrons tend to
cancel each other. The resultant ferromagnetic moment becomes smaller as
compared with the local 4f moment, and the Fermi surface in the ferromagnetic
ground state is hardly affected by the presence of 4f electrons. These
theoretical results are consistent with experimental observations in CeRh_3B_2
by neutron scattering and dHvA effects.Comment: to be published in J.Phys.Soc.Jp
Non-gaussianity of inflationary field perturbations from the field equation
We calculate the tree-level bispectrum of the inflaton field perturbation
directly from the field equations, and construct the corresponding f_NL
parameter. Our results agree with previous ones derived from the Lagrangian. We
argue that quantum theory should only be used to calculate the correlators when
they first become classical a few Hubble times after horizon exit, the

Abelian 2-form gauge theory: special features
It is shown that the four -dimensional (4D) free Abelian 2-form
gauge theory provides an example of (i) a class of field theoretical models for
the Hodge theory, and (ii) a possible candidate for the quasi-topological field
theory (q-TFT). Despite many striking similarities with some of the key
topological features of the two -dimensional (2D) free Abelian (and
self-interacting non-Abelian) gauge theories, it turns out that the 4D free
Abelian 2-form gauge theory is {\it not} an exact TFT. To corroborate this
conclusion, some of the key issues are discussed. In particular, it is shown
that the (anti-)BRST and (anti-)co-BRST invariant quantities of the 4D 2-form
Abelian gauge theory obey the recursion relations that are reminiscent of the
exact TFTs but the Lagrangian density of this theory is not found to be able to
be expressed as the sum of (anti-)BRST and (anti-)co-BRST exact quantities as
is the case with the {\it topological} 2D free Abelian (and self-interacting

Fine needle aspiration cytology in parotid lumps
Over a period of two years, Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC) was performed on 33 patients presenting with a parotid lump. Five patients were excluded as they were treated medically after FNAC report. The FNAC results of 28 cases were compared with histopathological diagnoses of surgically resected specimens. There were 8 true positive, 17 true negative, 1 false positive and 2 false negative cases. Sensitivity was 80%, specificity 94.4% and diagnostic accuracy 89.3%. FNAC is a simple quick, accurate and virtually complications free investigative modality. It is also helpful adjunct to assess preoperatively the suitability and extent of the surgical treatment
