Impact of Technology on Meat Safety
Innovations and new technologies tend to create apprehension among consumers who are not familiar with the technologies and their mode of action. This case currently exists regarding the use of hormones, antibiotics and other feed additives in livestock production. The purpose of this fact sheet is to familiarize consumers with some of the products of technology that are currently utilized in the production of meat animals and to provide an evaluation of how these products impact the safety of meat and meat products
Effects of Limit Feeding a High Concentrate Diet on Feedlot Performance and Carcass Composition of Lambs
Limit feeding high concentrate diets offers several potential benefits to lamb feeders. Limit feeding is one alternative to ad libitum feeding where intake is restricted to an amount which will permit animals to attain some predetermined daily weight gain. This type of feeding system provides a means to reduce day-to-day variations in feed intake, simplifies bunk management, and allows for greater control over feed inventories (Zinn, 1 986) . Using limit feeding to program a particular rate of gain also allows greater marketing flexibility. Restricting intake has been shown to improve the efficiency at which feed is converted into live weight gain in sheep (Glimp et al. , 1989) and cattle (Plegge, 1986) . Reduced average daily gains have been shown to reduce the fat content of empty body weight gains (Turgeon et al. , 1986) . Introducing a basic psychological performance demand model for sport and organisations
This study presents the development of a basic psychological performance demand model (PDM) for sport and organisations, adopting a process view of performance underpinned by reversal theory (Apter [2001] An introduction to reversal theory. In M. J. Apter (Ed.), Motivational styles in everyday life: A guide to reversal theory (pp. 3-36â ). Washington, DC: American Psychological Association). Six elite coaches with extensive coaching experience at European, Commonwealth, Olympic and Paralympic Games were interviewed. Their interview statements were analysed using a combination of deductive and inductive analysis procedures for qualitative data. In conjunction with the interviewer, coaches developed PDMs for their specific sports. Analysis of interview data and coachesâ specific PDMs identified four main cross-sport themes or fundamental psychological capabilities required for meeting performance demands. These were: Mastery motivation, Decision making, Execution, and Teamship. The PDM offers a starting framework for a new basic performance model that is novel and pragmatic with potential applicability across sports and organisations. The model is useful in its existing form, but needs further testing, extended practical application and reflection by coaches, athletes, and sport psychologists. It has potential for use in other coaching contexts beyond sport, such as business, leadership development, education, and health
On the Apparent Orbital Inclination Change of the Extrasolar Transiting Planet TrES-2b
On June 15, 2009 UT the transit of TrES-2b was detected using the University
of Arizona's 1.55 meter Kuiper Telescope with 2.0-2.5 millimag RMS accuracy in
the I-band. We find a central transit time of
HJD, an orbital period of days, and an
inclination angle of , which is consistent with our
re-fit of the original I-band light curve of O'Donovan et al. (2006) where we
find . We calculate an insignificant inclination
change of over the last 3 years, and as
such, our observations rule out, at the level, the apparent
change of orbital inclination to as
predicted by Mislis and Schmitt (2009) and Mislis et al. (2010) for our epoch.
Moreover, our analysis of a recently published Kepler Space Telescope light
curve (Gilliland et al. 2010) for TrES-2b finds an inclination of for a similar epoch. These Kepler results definitively
rule out change in as a function of time. Indeed, we detect no significant

New Spatially Resolved Observations of the T Cha Transition Disk and Constraints on the Previously Claimed Substellar Companion
We present multi-epoch non-redundant masking observations of the T Cha
transition disk, taken at the VLT and Magellan in H, Ks, and L' bands. T Cha is
one of a small number of transition disks that host companion candidates
discovered by high-resolution imaging techniques, with a putative companion at
a position angle of 78 degrees, separation of 62 mas, and contrast at L' of 5.1
mag. We find comparable binary parameters in our re-reduction of the initial
detection images, and similar parameters in the 2011 L', 2013 NaCo L', and 2013
NaCo Ks data sets. We find a close-in companion signal in the 2012 NaCo L'
dataset that cannot be explained by orbital motion, and a non-detection in the
2013 MagAO/Clio2 L' data. However, Monte-carlo simulations show that the best
fits to the 2012 NaCo and 2013 MagAO/Clio2 followup data may be consistent with
noise. There is also a significant probability of false non-detections in both
of these data sets. We discuss physical scenarios that could cause the best
fits, and argue that previous companion and scattering explanations are
