Australian consumers' willingness to pay and willingness to purchase a hypothetical lower cholesterol pork product
This study investigated whether there would be an increase in consumer willingness to pay and purchase if reduced cholesterol pork was introduced to the Australian market. A stated choice analysis was used, with the following questions addressed. How are current purchases of fresh pork affected by concerns about cholesterol content? What financial premium, if any, would consumers place on reduced cholesterol pork? Would consumers buy more pork if a low cholesterol option were available? Is there a group of consumers, such as those with high cholesterol, who have an increased willingness to pay for or purchase reduced cholesterol pork when compared to consumers without this health problem? Results from this study indicated that at present the majority of consumers are relatively unconcerned about the cholesterol content of fresh pork and that there is a minimal effect of such concerns on fresh pork purchases. The results also predicted a significant financial premium for the reduced cholesterol product at the retail level, with increased willingness to pay for and consume reduced cholesterol pork by the average pork consuming family. The effects of concurrent picture presentations on retelling of orally presented stories by adults with aphasia
This study investigated whether measures of verbal productivity, verbal disruption, information content, grammatical complexity, and grammatical well formedness would vary as a function of experimental conditions in which the presence of pictured stimuli was manipulated during the oral presentation and retelling of stories. Fifteen adults with aphasia retold stories under three experimental conditions: (i) concurrent presentation of oral and pictured versions of stories followed by a picture-supported retell, (ii) concurrent presentation of oral and pictured versions of stories followed by a 'free' retell, and (iii) orally presented stories followed by a free retell. Group analyses revealed no significant differences across experimental conditions for any of the dependent measures. Analyses of individual subjects' data revealed clinically important differences for several measures of information content, with individual subjects responding differently to the experimental conditions
Needles in haystacks: using fast-response LA chambers and ICP-TOF-MS to identify asbestos fibres in malignant mesothelioma models
Malignant mesothelioma is an aggressive cancer associated with exposure to asbestos. Diagnosis of mesothelioma and other related lung diseases remains elusive due to difficulties surrounding identification and quantification of asbestos fibres in lung tissue. This article presents a laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) method to identify asbestos fibres in cellular models of mesothelioma. Use of a high-speed laser ablation system enabled rapid imaging of the samples with a lateral resolution of 3 μm, whilst use of a prototype time-of-flight ICP-MS provided pseudo-simultaneous detection of the elements between mass 23 (Na) and mass 238 (U). Three forms of asbestos fibre (actinolite, amosite and crocidolite) were distinguished from a non-asbestos control (wollastonite) based on their elemental profile, which demonstrated that LA-ICP-MS could be a viable technique for identification of asbestos fibres in clinical research samples
The Chandra Multi-Wavelength Project: Optical Spectroscopy and the Broadband Spectral Energy Distributions of X-ray Selected AGN
From optical spectroscopy of X-ray sources observed as part of ChaMP, we
present redshifts and classifications for a total of 1569 Chandra sources from
our targeted spectroscopic follow up using the FLWO, SAAO, WIYN, CTIO, KPNO,
Magellan, MMT and Gemini telescopes, and from archival SDSS spectroscopy. We
classify the optical counterparts as 50% BLAGN, 16% NELG, 14% ALG, and 20%
stars. We detect QSOs out to z~5.5 and galaxies out to z~3. We have compiled
extensive photometry from X-ray to radio bands. Together with our spectroscopic
information, this enables us to derive detailed SEDs for our extragalactic
sources. We fit a variety of templates to determine bolometric luminosities,
and to constrain AGN and starburst components where both are present. While
~58% of X-ray Seyferts require a starburst event to fit observed photometry
only 26% of the X-ray QSO population appear to have some kind of star formation
contribution. This is significantly lower than for the Seyferts, especially if
we take into account torus contamination at z>1 where the majority of our X-ray
QSOs lie. In addition, we observe a rapid drop of the percentage of starburst
contribution as X-ray luminosity increases. This is consistent with the
quenching of star formation by powerful QSOs, as predicted by the merger model,
or with a time lag between the peak of star formation and QSO activity. We have
tested the hypothesis that there should be a strong connection between X-ray
obscuration and star-formation but we do not find any association between X-ray
column density and star formation rate both in the general population or the
star-forming X-ray Seyferts. Our large compilation also allows us to report
here the identification of 81 XBONG, 78 z>3 X-ray sources and 8 Type-2 QSO
candidates. Also we have identified the highest redshift (z=5.4135) X-ray

Effects of training multiple form classes on acquisition, generalization and maintenance of word retrieval in a single subject
A study by McNeil et nl. reported no generalization effects in two individuals with aphasia following application of a word finding treatment in which subjects were trained sequentially on lexical items arranged by form class. The present investigation examined, in one of the two subjects from the original study, whether training on lexical items from a variety of form classes concurrently would result in greater response generalization than was observed previously in this subject. Results replicated earlier findings with positive acquisition and maintenance effects and little evidence of generalization to untrained items within or across form classes
Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry as a novel clinical imaging tool to detect asbestos fibres in malignant mesothelioma.
RATIONALE: Malignant pleural mesothelioma is an extremely aggressive and incurable malignancy associated with prior exposure to asbestos fibres. Difficulties remain in relation to early diagnosis, notably due to impeded identification of asbestos in lung tissue. This study describes a novel laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) imaging approach to identify asbestos within mesothelioma models with clinical significance. METHODS: Human mesothelioma cells were exposed to different types of asbestos fibres and prepared on plastic slides for LA-ICP-MS analysis. No further sample preparation was required prior to analysis, which was performed using an NWR Image 266nm laser ablation system coupled to an Element XR sector-field ICP mass spectrometer, with a lateral resolution of 2 μm. Data was processed using LA-ICP-MS ImageTool v1.7 with the final graphic production made using DPlot Software. RESULTS: Four different mineral fibres were successfully identified within the mesothelioma samples based on some of the most abundant elements that make up these fibres (Si, Mg and Fe). Using LA-ICP-MS as an imaging tool provided information on the spatial distribution of the fibres at cellular level, which is essential in asbestos detection within tissue samples. Based on the metal counts generated by the different types of asbestos, different fibres can be identified based on shape, size, and elemental composition. Detection of Ca was attempted but requires further optimisation. CONCLUSION: Asbestos fibres detection in the lung tissues is very useful, if not necessary, to complete the pathological diagnosis of asbestos-related malignancies in medicolegal field. For the first time, this study demonstrates the successful application of LA-ICP-MS imaging to identify asbestos fibres and other mineral fibres within mesothelioma samples. Ultimately, high-resolution, fast-speed LA-ICP-MS analysis has the potential to be integrated into clinical workflow to aid earlier detection and stratification of mesothelioma patient samples

We offer a framework for assessing what the structure of episodic memory might be, if one accepts the Buddhist denial of persisting selves. Recovery of Metastable Dense Bi Synthesized by Shock Compression
X-ray free electron laser (XFEL) sources have revolutionized our capability to study ultrafast material behavior. Using an XFEL, we revisit the structural dynamics of shock compressed bismuth, resolving the transition sequence on shock release in unprecedented details. Unlike previous studies that found the phase-transition sequence on shock release to largely adhere to the equilibrium phase diagram (i.e., Bi-V → Bi-III → Bi-II → Bi-I), our results clearly reveal previously unseen, non-equilibrium behavior at these conditions. On pressure release from the Bi-V phase at 5 GPa, the Bi-III phase is not formed but rather a new metastable form of Bi. This new phase transforms into the Bi-II phase which in turn transforms into a phase of Bi which is not observed on compression. We determine this phase to be isostructural with β-Sn and recover it to ambient pressure where it exists for 20 ns before transforming back to the Bi-I phase. The structural relationship between the tetragonal β-Sn phase and the Bi-II phase (from which it forms) is discussed. Our results show the effect that rapid compression rates can have on the phase selection in a transforming material and show great promise for recovering high-pressure polymorphs with novel material properties in the future
UBVRI Light Curves of 44 Type Ia Supernovae
We present UBVRI photometry of 44 type-Ia supernovae (SN Ia) observed from
1997 to 2001 as part of a continuing monitoring campaign at the Fred Lawrence
Whipple Observatory of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. The
data set comprises 2190 observations and is the largest homogeneously observed
and reduced sample of SN Ia to date, nearly doubling the number of
well-observed, nearby SN Ia with published multicolor CCD light curves. The
large sample of U-band photometry is a unique addition, with important
connections to SN Ia observed at high redshift. The decline rate of SN Ia
U-band light curves correlates well with the decline rate in other bands, as
does the U-B color at maximum light. However, the U-band peak magnitudes show
an increased dispersion relative to other bands even after accounting for
extinction and decline rate, amounting to an additional ~40% intrinsic scatter

Sarbecoviruses of British Horseshoe Bats; Sequence Variation and Epidemiology
Horseshoe bats are the natural hosts of the Sarbecovirus subgenus that includes SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV- 2. Despite the devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, there is still little known about the underlying epidemiology and virology of sarbecoviruses in their natural hosts, leaving large gaps in our pandemic preparedness. Here we describe the results of PCR testing for sarbecoviruses in the two horseshoe bat species (Rhinolophus hipposideros and R. ferrumequinum) present in Great Britain, collected in 2021–22 during the peak of COVID-19 pandemic. One hundred and ninety seven R. hipposideros samples from 33 roost sites and 277 R. ferrumequinum samples from 20 roost sites were tested. No coronaviruses were detected in any samples from R. ferrumequinum whereas 44 and 56 % of individual and pooled (respectively) faecal samples from R. hipposideros across multiple roost sites tested positive in a sarbecovirus-specific qPCR. Full genome sequences were generated from three of the positive samples (and partial genomes from two more) using Illumina RNAseq on unenriched samples. Phylogenetic analyses showed that the obtained sequences belong to the same monophyletic clade, with >95 % similarity to previously-reported European isolates from R. hipposideros. The sequences differed in the presence or absence of accessory genes ORF 7b, 9b and 10. All lacked the furin cleavage site of SARS-CoV-2 spike gene and are therefore unlikely to be infective for humans. These results demonstrate a lack, or at least low incidence, of SARS-CoV-2 spill over from humans to susceptible GB bats, and confirm that sarbecovirus infection is widespread in R. hipposideros.
