    Arteriovenous Fistula after Femoral Artery Puncture Leading to Pulmonary Edema: The Role of Ultrasonography

    Local complications of arterial puncture include hematoma, pseudoaneurysm and formation of arteriovenous fistula (AVF). The latter could cause ischemia of the particular extremity or can be hemodynamically significant especially in patients suffering from congestive heart failure. We report a case of femoro-femoral AVF after thin needle arterial puncture for blood drawing. The development of this iatrogenic AVF led to pulmonary edema. The patient stabilized completely after surgical closure of the AVF. The AVF was diagnosed by duplex Doppler ultrasonography and this method was also used for estimation of blood flow through the AVF. We discuss the role of ultrasound AVF diagnostics and the method of flow calculation

    Cisplatin induced gamma-glutamyltransferase up-regulation, hypertrophy and differentiation in astrocytic glioma cells in culture

    Gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) hydrolyses gamma-glutamylated peptides, including glutathione and transports amino acids into the cells. The enzyme is up-regulated in some tumors, especially those with a higher degree of malignancy and resistance to cytostatics. In this study we examined the effects of Cisplatin (1.6 x 10-5M) on the activity of GGT in astrocytic C6 glioma cells in cultures monitored for growth, morphology and differentiation. Initially (24 h), the drug inhibited cell division and later (96 h), it caused apoptotic death of about half of the population. The more resistant and surviving cells became hypertrophic and more differentiated, as indicated by their larger size and higher protein content, including the maturationspecific GFAP. In addition, the activity of GGT was significantly elevated in these cells at 48 h and onwards. At 96 h, the biochemically determined enzyme activity was between 230% and 330% above the controls. Compared to the protein content, the GGT activity started to increase later (48 h) but it grew steeper towards 72-96 h. Similarly, histochemical analysis revealed a manifold increase in the number of GGT+ cells in the population and higher intensity of staining per cell from at 48 h and onwards. The study showed that the transformed astrocytic cells can up-regulate GGT activity as part of an adaptation and/or, survivalenhancing reaction triggered by Cisplatin

    Evaluating Discharge Regimes of Karst Aquifer

    Karst springs are typical for abrupt changes of discharge immediately following recharge events. Monitored discharges of springs are used to determine quantitative variability over the period of time, showing their reliability as dependable water sources. Karst aquifers also exhibit (at least) dual ground-water flow regimes, that is, fast (conduit-dominated) flow and slow (diffuse) flow. This is something that can be observed in nature as the fast change of water amount outflowing from the groundwater source, or described by rapidly responding hydrographs, recording water levels or discharges. Selection of proper investigative techniques characterizing discharge regime properties of a karst aquifer is therefore important in order to identify possible theoretical background models describing this behaviour. On this basis, we can also find a particular method of hydrograph separation into flow components linked to the fast-flow regime, slow-flow regime, or intermediate regimes as well. With this point in mind, several quantitative methods that might be particularly useful in hydrograph analysis of water outlets from the karst aquifer system are briefly discussed here

    State of the art of karst vulnerability assessment: overview, evaluation and outlook

    The study gives an overview of the evolution of the concepts and approaches to karst groundwater vulnerability, its connections to previous vulnerability evaluations and of the steps proposed for the assessment. The majority of the methods are based on prerequisites derived from the basic processes of shallow karst systems in the form of transferred parameters. A systematic survey of existing methods and their applications highlights the significance of scale, parameters, its intrinsic or specific and source or resource nature. Revealing the relationships between methods helps to understand their innovations, advantages, disadvantages and the data need. Based on the literature study, the critical examination of the physical reliability of the resulting vulnerability maps and the necessity of their validation is also highlighted. The paper considers the possible and desirable directions for further research, including the development of process-based methods and involvement of an understanding of the flow and transport processes of karstified carbonates. However, the various aspects of water management are not discussed in the present study
