Bianchi type I universes with dilaton and magnetic fields
We consider the dynamics of a Bianchi type I spacetime in the presence of
dilaton and magnetic fields. The general solution of the Einstein-Maxwell
dilaton field equations can be obtained in an exact parametric form. Depending
on the numerical values of the parameters of the model there are three distinct
classes of solutions. The time evolution of the mean anisotropy, shear and
deceleration parameter is considered in detail and it is shown that a
magnetic-dilaton anisotropic Bianchi type I geometry does not isotropize, the
initial anisotropy being present in the universe for all times.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure
Relativistic Compact Objects in Isotropic Coordinates
We present a matrix method for obtaining new classes of exact solutions for
Einstein's equations representing static perfect fluid spheres. By means of a
matrix transformation, we reduce Einstein's equations to two independent
Riccati type differential equations for which three classes of solutions are
obtained. One class of the solutions corresponding to the linear barotropic
type fluid with an equation of state is discussed in detail.Comment: 9 pages, no figures, accepted for publication in Pramana-Journal of

Audit of Antenatal Testing of Sexually Transmissible Infections and Blood Borne Viruses at Western Australian Hospitals
In August 2007, the Western Australian Department of Health (DOH) released updated recommendations for testing of sexually transmissible infections (STI) and blood-borne viruses (BBV) in antenates. Prior to this, the Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) antenatal testing recommendations had been accepted practice in most antenatal settings. The RANZCOG recommends that testing for HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B and C be offered at the first antenatal visit. The DOH recommends that in addition, chlamydia testing be offered. We conducted a baseline audit of antenatal STI/BBV testing in women who delivered at selected public hospitals before the DOH recommendations.
We examined the medical records of 200 women who had delivered before 1st July 2007 from each of the sevenWAhospitals included in the audit. STI and BBV testing information and demographic data were collected. Of the 1,409 women included, 1,205 (86%) were non-Aboriginal and 200 (14%) were Aboriginal. High proportions of women had been tested for HIV (76%), syphilis (86%), hepatitis C (87%) and hepatitis B (88%). Overall, 72% of women had undergone STI/BBV testing in accordance with RANZCOG recommendations. However, chlamydia testing was evident in only 18% of records. STI/BBV prevalence ranged from 3.9% (CI 1.5â 6.3%) for chlamydia, to 1.7% (CI 1â2.4%) for hepatitis C, 0.7% (CI 0.3â1.2) for hepatitis B and 0.6% (CI 0.2â1) for syphilis.
Prior to the DOH recommendations, nearly three-quarters of antenates had undergone STI/BBV testing in accordance with RANZCOG recommendations, but less than one fifth had been tested for chlamydia. The DOH recommendations will be further promoted with the assistance of hospitals and other stakeholders. A future audit will be conducted to determine the proportion of women tested according to the DOH recommendations.

Multilevel blocking approach to the fermion sign problem in path-integral Monte Carlo simulations
A general algorithm toward the solution of the fermion sign problem in
finite-temperature quantum Monte Carlo simulations has been formulated for
discretized fermion path integrals with nearest-neighbor interactions in the
Trotter direction. This multilevel approach systematically implements a simple
blocking strategy in a recursive manner to synthesize the sign cancellations
among different fermionic paths throughout the whole configuration space. The
practical usefulness of the method is demonstrated for interacting electrons in
a quantum dot.Comment: 4 pages RevTeX, incl. two figure
Causal Bulk Viscous Dissipative Isotropic Cosmologies with Variable Gravitational and Cosmological Constants
We consider the evolution of a flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker Universe,
filled with a causal bulk viscous cosmological fluid, in the presence of
variable gravitational and cosmological constants. The basic equation for the
Hubble parameter, generalizing the evolution equation in the case of constant
gravitational coupling and cosmological term, is derived, under the
supplementary assumption that the total energy of the Universe is conserved. By
assuming that the cosmological constant is proportional to the square of the
Hubble parameter and a power law dependence of the bulk viscosity coefficient,
temperature and relaxation time on the energy density of the cosmological
fluid, two classes of exact solutions of the field equations are obtained. In
the first class of solutions the Universe ends in an inflationary era, while in
the second class of solutions the expansion of the Universe is non-inflationary
for all times. In both models the cosmological "constant" is a decreasing
function of time, while the gravitational "constant" increases in the early
period of evolution of the Universe, tending in the large time limit to a
constant value.Comment: 14 pages, 15 figure
Crossover from Fermi liquid to Wigner molecule behavior in quantum dots
The crossover from weak to strong correlations in parabolic quantum dots at
zero magnetic field is studied by numerically exact path-integral Monte Carlo
simulations for up to eight electrons. By the use of a multilevel blocking
algorithm, the simulations are carried out free of the fermion sign problem. We
obtain a universal crossover only governed by the density parameter . For
, the data are consistent with a Wigner molecule description, while
for , Fermi liquid behavior is recovered. The crossover value is surprisingly small.Comment: 4 pages RevTeX, 3 figures, corrected Tabl
Stochastic Cutoff Method for Long-Range Interacting Systems
A new Monte-Carlo method for long-range interacting systems is presented.
This method consists of eliminating interactions stochastically with the
detailed balance condition satisfied. When a pairwise interaction of a
-particle system decreases with the distance as ,
computational time per one Monte Carlo step is for
and for , where is the spatial
dimension. We apply the method to a two-dimensional magnetic dipolar system.
The method enables us to treat a huge system of spins with reasonable
computational time, and reproduces a circular order originated from long-range
dipolar interactions.Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures, 1 figure and 1 reference are adde
Dynamical simulation of transport in one-dimensional quantum wires
Transport of single-channel spinless interacting fermions (Luttinger liquid)
through a barrier has been studied by numerically exact quantum Monte Carlo
methods. A novel stochastic integration over the real-time paths allows for
direct computation of nonequilibrium conductance and noise properties. We have
examined the low-temperature scaling of the conductance in the crossover region
between a very weak and an almost insulating barrier.Comment: REVTex, 4 pages, 2 uuencoded figures (submitted to Phys. Rev. Lett.
Vacuum solutions of the gravitational field equations in the brane world model
We consider some classes of solutions of the static, spherically symmetric
gravitational field equations in the vacuum in the brane world scenario, in
which our Universe is a three-brane embedded in a higher dimensional
space-time. The vacuum field equations on the brane are reduced to a system of
two ordinary differential equations, which describe all the geometric
properties of the vacuum as functions of the dark pressure and dark radiation
terms (the projections of the Weyl curvature of the bulk, generating non-local
brane stresses). Several classes of exact solutions of the vacuum gravitational
field equations on the brane are derived. In the particular case of a vanishing
dark pressure the integration of the field equations can be reduced to the
integration of an Abel type equation. A perturbative procedure, based on the
iterative solution of an integral equation, is also developed for this case.
Brane vacuums with particular symmetries are investigated by using Lie group
techniques. In the case of a static vacuum brane admitting a one-parameter
group of conformal motions the exact solution of the field equations can be
found, with the functional form of the dark radiation and pressure terms
uniquely fixed by the symmetry. The requirement of the invariance of the field
equations with respect to the quasi-homologous group of transformations also
imposes a unique, linear proportionality relation between the dark energy and
dark pressure. A homology theorem for the static, spherically symmetric
gravitational field equations in the vacuum on the brane is also proven.Comment: 13 pages, no figures, to appear in PR
Measurement Invariance of the Internet Addiction Test Among Hong Kong, Japanese, and Malaysian Adolescents
There has been increased research examining the psychometric properties on the Internet Addiction Test across different ages and populations. This population-based study examined the psychometric properties using Confirmatory Factory Analysis and measurement invariance using Item Response Theory (IRT) of the IAT in adolescents from three Asian countries. In the Asian Adolescent Risk Behavior Survey (AARBS), 2,535 secondary school students (55.91% girls) in Grade 7 to Grade 13 (Mean age = 15.61 years; SD=1.56) from Hong Kong (n=844), Japan (n=744), and Malaysia (n=947) completed a survey on their Internet use that incorporated the IAT scale. A nested hierarchy of hypotheses concerning IAT cross-country invariance was tested using multi-group confirmatory factor analysis. Replicating past finding in Hong Kong adolescents, the construct of IAT is best represented by a second-order three-factor structure in Malaysian and Japanese adolescents. Configural, metric, scalar, and partial strict factorial invariance was established across the three samples. No cross-country differences on Internet addiction were detected at latent mean level. This study provided empirical support to the IAT as a reliable and factorially stable instrument, and valid to be used across Asian adolescent populations
