Measurement of Inclusive Spin Structure Functions of the Deuteron
We report the results of a new measurement of spin structure functions of the
deuteron in the region of moderate momentum transfer ( = 0.27 -- 1.3
(GeV/c)) and final hadronic state mass in the nucleon resonance region (
= 1.08 -- 2.0 GeV). We scattered a 2.5 GeV polarized continuous electron beam
at Jefferson Lab off a dynamically polarized cryogenic solid state target
(ND) and detected the scattered electrons with the CEBAF Large
Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS). From our data, we extract the longitudinal
double spin asymmetry and the spin structure function . Our
data are generally in reasonable agreement with existing data from SLAC where
they overlap, and they represent a substantial improvement in statistical
precision. We compare our results with expectations for resonance asymmetries
and extrapolated deep inelastic scaling results. Finally, we evaluate the first
moment of the structure function and study its approach to both the
deep inelastic limit at large and to the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule
at the real photon limit (). We find that the first moment varies
rapidly in the range of our experiment and crosses zero at between
0.5 and 0.8 (GeV/c), indicating the importance of the resonance at

Dependence of Quadrupole Strength in the Transition
Models of baryon structure predict a small quadrupole deformation of the
nucleon due to residual tensor forces between quarks or distortions from the
pion cloud. Sensitivity to quark versus pion degrees of freedom occurs through
the dependence of the magnetic (), electric (), and
scalar () multipoles in the
transition. We report new experimental values for the ratios
and over the range = 0.4-1.8 GeV, extracted from
precision data using a truncated multipole expansion.
Results are best described by recent unitary models in which the pion cloud

The e p -> e' p eta reaction at and above the S11(1535) baryon resonance
New cross sections for the reaction e p -> ep eta are reported for total
center of mass energy W = 1.5--1.86 GeV and invariant momentum transfer Q^2 =
0.25--1.5 GeV^2. This large kinematic range allows extraction of important new
information about response functions, photocouplings, and eta N coupling
strengths of baryon resonances. Expanded W coverage shows sharp structure at W
\~ 1.7 GeV; this is shown to come from interference between S and P waves and
can be interpreted in terms of known resonances. Improved values are derived

Photoproduction of phi(1020) mesons on the proton at large momentum transfer
The cross section for meson photoproduction on the proton has been
measured for the first time up to a four-momentum transfer -t = 4 GeV^2, using
the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. At low
four-momentum transfer, the differential cross section is well described by
Pomeron exchange. At large four-momentum transfer, above -t = 1.8 GeV^2, the
data support a model where the Pomeron is resolved into its simplest component,
two gluons, which may couple to any quark in the proton and in the .Comment: 5 pages; 7 figure
Exclusive Photoproduction of the Cascade (Xi) Hyperons
We report on the first measurement of exclusive Xi-(1321) hyperon
photoproduction in gamma p --> K+ K+ Xi- for 3.2 < E(gamma) < 3.9 GeV. The
final state is identified by the missing mass in p(gamma,K+ K+)X measured with
the CLAS detector at Jefferson Laboratory. We have detected a significant
number of the ground-state Xi-(1321)1/2+, and have estimated the total cross
section for its production. We have also observed the first excited state
Xi-(1530)3/2+. Photoproduction provides a copious source of Xi's. We discuss
the possibilities of a search for the recently proposed Xi5-- and Xi5+

Microstructural mechanisms and advanced characterization of long and small fatigue crack growth in cast A356-T61 aluminum alloys
Fatigue crack growth-based design is a significant modern engineering consideration for the transportation sector, and its implementation requires accurate characterization and understanding of crack propagation mechanisms with respect to microstructure. To support this goal, long and small fatigue crack growth studies were conducted on widely used A356-T6 cast aluminum alloys in various microstructural conditions. Microstructural variations were created through processing and chemistry means in order to systematically investigate the individual and combined effects of the materials’ characteristic microstructural features on fatigue crack growth at all growth stages. Crack growth mechanisms and failure mode transitions are identified with respect to the eutectic Si morphology/distribution and grain structure by fractographic techniques and electron backscatter diffraction. Crack-microstructure interactions were investigated in depth across all crack sizes, and the respective roles of microstructural features were identified experimentally and further corroborated by numerical models. It is concluded that the eutectic Si phase enhances the alloys’ fatigue crack growth resistance in early growth stages (by transferring stresses off of the α-Al matrix), and progressively decreases due to damage localization. In later growth stages, the eutectic Si phase becomes increasingly detrimental to fatigue crack growth resistance because of its inherently low debonding strength and brittle fracture, as evidenced by the crack selectively following eutectic Si colonies
Atorvastatin Improves Survival in Septic Rats: Effect on Tissue Inflammatory Pathway and on Insulin Signaling
The aim of the present study was to investigate whether the survival-improving effect of atorvastatin in sepsis is accompanied by a reduction in tissue activation of inflammatory pathways and, in parallel, an improvement in tissue insulin signaling in rats. Diffuse sepsis was induced by cecal ligation and puncture surgery (CLP) in male Wistar rats. Serum glucose and inflammatory cytokines levels were assessed 24 h after CLP. The effect of atorvastatin on survival of septic animals was investigated in parallel with insulin signaling and its modulators in liver, muscle and adipose tissue. Atorvastatin improves survival in septic rats and this improvement is accompanied by a marked improvement in insulin sensitivity, characterized by an increase in glucose disappearance rate during the insulin tolerance test. Sepsis induced an increase in the expression/activation of TLR4 and its downstream signaling JNK and IKK/NF-κB activation, and blunted insulin-induced insulin signaling in liver, muscle and adipose tissue; atorvastatin reversed all these alterations in parallel with a decrease in circulating levels of TNF-α and IL-6. In summary, this study demonstrates that atorvastatin treatment increased survival, with a significant effect upon insulin sensitivity, improving insulin signaling in peripheral tissues of rats during peritoneal-induced sepsis. The effect of atorvastatin on the suppression of the TLR-dependent inflammatory pathway may play a central role in regulation of insulin signaling and survival in sepsis insult
DRAFT: Photoproduction of the meson on the proton at large momentum transfer
The differential cross section, , for meson
photoproduction on the proton above the resonance region ( GeV) was
measured up to a momentum transfer GeV using the CLAS detector at
the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The channel was
extracted from the measured two charged-pion cross section by fitting the
and invariant masses. The low momentum transfer region
shows the typical diffractive pattern expected from Reggeon-exchange. The
flatter behavior at large -t cannot be explained solely in terms of
QCD-inspired two-gluon exchange models. The data indicate that other processes,

Study of polarized-e polarized-p --> e-prime p pi0 in the Delta(1232) mass region using polarization asymmetries
Measurements of the angular distributions of target and double spin
asymmetries for the Delta(1232) in the exclusive channel (polarized-p
polarized-e,e-prime p)pi0 obtained at Jefferson Lab in the Q2 range from 0.5 to
1.5 gev2 are presented. Results of the asymmetries are compared with the
unitary isobar model, dynamical models, and the effective Lagrangian theory.
Sensitivity to the different models was observed, particularly in relation to
the description of background terms on which the target asymmetry depends
