    Controlling stress corrosion cracking in mechanism components of ground support equipment

    The selection of materials for mechanism components used in ground support equipment so that failures resulting from stress corrosion cracking will be prevented is described. A general criteria to be used in designing for resistance to stress corrosion cracking is also provided. Stress corrosion can be defined as combined action of sustained tensile stress and corrosion to cause premature failure of materials. Various aluminum, steels, nickel, titanium and copper alloys, and tempers and corrosive environment are evaluated for stress corrosion cracking

    Quantum Field Theory with Nonzero Minimal Uncertainties in Positions and Momenta

    A noncommutative geometric generalisation of the quantum field theoretical framework is developed by generalising the Heisenberg commutation relations. There appear nonzero minimal uncertainties in positions and in momenta. As the main result it is shown with the example of a quadratically ultraviolet divergent graph in Ď•4\phi^4 theory that nonzero minimal uncertainties in positions do have the power to regularise. These studies are motivated with the ansatz that nonzero minimal uncertainties in positions and in momenta arise from gravity.     Quantisation of twistor theory by cocycle twist

    We present the main ingredients of twistor theory leading up to and including the Penrose-Ward transform in a coordinate algebra form which we can then `quantise' by means of a functorial cocycle twist. The quantum algebras for the conformal group, twistor space CP^3, compactified Minkowski space CMh and the twistor correspondence space are obtained along with their canonical quantum differential calculi, both in a local form and in a global *-algebra formulation which even in the classical commutative case provides a useful alternative to the formulation in terms of projective varieties. We outline how the Penrose-Ward transform then quantises. As an example, we show that the pull-back of the tautological bundle on CMh pulls back to the basic instanton on S^4\subset CMh and that this observation quantises to obtain the Connes-Landi instanton on \theta-deformed S^4 as the pull-back of the tautological bundle on our \theta-deformed CMh. We likewise quantise the fibration CP^3--> S^4 and use it to construct the bundle on \theta-deformed CP^3 that maps over under the transform to the \theta-deformed instanton.Comment: 68 pages 0 figures.     Generalized exclusion and Hopf algebras

    We propose a generalized oscillator algebra at the roots of unity with generalized exclusion and we investigate the braided Hopf structure. We find that there are two solutions: these are the generalized exclusions of the bosonic and fermionic types.     Physics of Quantum Relativity through a Linear Realization

    The idea of quantum relativity as a generalized, or rather deformed, version of Einstein (special) relativity has been taking shape in recent years. Following the perspective of deformations, while staying within the framework of Lie algebra, we implement explicitly a simple linear realization of the relativity symmetry, and explore systematically the resulting physical interpretations. Some suggestions we make may sound radical, but are arguably natural within the context of our formulation.     Spectral geometry of Îş\kappa-Minkowski space

    After recalling Snyder's idea of using vector fields over a smooth manifold as `coordinates on a noncommutative space', we discuss a two dimensional toy-model whose `dual' noncommutative coordinates form a Lie algebra: this is the well known Îş\kappa-Minkowski space. We show how to improve Snyder's idea using the tools of quantum groups and noncommutative geometry. We find a natural representation of the coordinate algebra of Îş\kappa-Minkowski as linear operators on an Hilbert space study its `spectral properties' and discuss how to obtain a Dirac operator for this space. We describe two Dirac operators. The first is associated with a spectral triple. We prove that the cyclic integral of M. Dimitrijevic et al. can be obtained as Dixmier trace associated to this triple. The second Dirac operator is equivariant for the action of the quantum Euclidean group, but it has unbounded commutators with the algebra.Comment: 23 pages, expanded versio

    Discovery of 16.6 and 25.5 s Pulsations from the Small Magellanic Cloud

    We report the serendipitous detection of two previously unreported pulsars from the direction of the Small Magellanic Cloud, with periods of 16.6 and 25.5 seconds. The detections are based on archival PCA data from the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). The observation leading to these detections occurred in September 2000 extending over 2.1 days with an exposure of 121 ks. A possible identification of the 16.6 s pulsar with an X-ray source RX J0051.8-7310 seen by both ROSAT and ASCA imaging X-ray satellites is presented.Comment: 9 pages with 3 figures.
