    Analysis of Transcripts Expressed in One-Day-Old Larvae and Fifth Instar Silk Glands of Tasar Silkworm, Antheraea mylitta

    Antheraea mylitta is one of the wild nonmulberry silkworms, which produces tasar silk. An EST project has been undertaken to understand the gene expression profile of A. mylitta silk gland. Two cDNA libraries, one from the whole bodies of one-day-old larvae and the other from the silkglands of fifth instar larvae, were constructed and sequenced. A total of 2476 good-quality ESTs (1239 clones) were obtained and grouped into 648 clusters containing 390 contigs and 258 singletons to represent 467 potential unigenes. Forty-five sequences contained putative coding region, and represented potentially novel genes. Among the 648 clusters, 241 were categorized according to Gene Ontology hierarchy and showed presence of several silk and immune-related genes. The A. mylitta ESTs have been organized into a freely available online database “AmyBASE”. These data provide an initial insight into the A. mylitta transcriptome and help to understand the molecular mechanism of silk protein production in a Lepidopteran species

    Design and Synthesis of Fluorescent Carbon Dot Polymer and Deciphering Its Electronic Structure

    Herein we report the one-pot synthesis of a fluorescent polymer-like material (pCD) by exploiting ruthenium-doped carbon dots (CDs) as building blocks. The unusual spectral profiles of pCDswith double-humped periodic excitation dependent photoluminescence (EDPL), and the regular changes in their corresponding average lifetime indicate the formation of high energy donor states and low energy aggregated states due to the overlap of molecular orbitals throughout the chemically switchable π-network of CDs on polymerization. To probe the electronic distribution of pCDs, we have investigated the occurrence of photoinduced electron transfer with a model electron acceptor, menadione using transient absorption technique, corroborated with low magnetic field, followed by identification of the transient radical ions generated through electron transfer. The experimentally obtained B_(1/2) value, a measure of the hyperfine interactions present in the system, indicates the presence of highly conjugated π-electron cloud in pCDs. The mechanism of formation of pCDs and the entire experimental findings have further been investigated through molecular modeling and computational modeling. The DFT calculations demonstrated probable electronic transitions from the surface moieties of pCDs to the tethered ligands

    Abstract: AIDS is a major public health concern today in India. AIDS does not discriminate between classes, castes or communities. It is caused by HIV, which is transmitted mainly through sexual intercourse. India has one of the largest road networks in the world, involving millions of drivers and helpers. This study has been undertaken to understand the burning issues of AIDS from the perspectives of relationship of truckers and commercial sex workers. The study has tried to connect the micro-level reality of AIDS with the issues of sexual behaviours of truckers with sex workers from the perspective of socio-behavioral conditionality of truckers. The methodology of the study was based on the primary data collected through direct interviews with truckers by using an interview schedule with structured questionnaire. The study revealed the sexual behavioural patterns of the truckers with the commercial sex workers (CSWs) who generally transmit STDs/HIV/AIDS. The rising trends in HIV infection in India have already stirred socio-cultural and ethical issues. The most serious impact of AIDS epidemic will be on economic development
