Utilizing Statistical Dialogue Act Processing in Verbmobil

    Get PDF
In this paper, we present a statistical approach for dialogue act processing in the dialogue component of the speech-to-speech translation system \vm. Statistics in dialogue processing is used to predict follow-up dialogue acts. As an application example we show how it supports repair when unexpected dialogue states occur.Comment: 6 pages; compressed and uuencoded postscript file; to appear in ACL-9

A Robust and Efficient Three-Layered Dialogue Component for a Speech-to-Speech Translation System

We present the dialogue component of the speech-to-speech translation system VERBMOBIL. In contrast to conventional dialogue systems it mediates the dialogue while processing maximally 50% of the dialogue in depth. Special requirements like robustness and efficiency lead to a 3-layered hybrid architecture for the dialogue module, using statistics, an automaton and a planner. A dialogue memory is constructed incrementally.Comment: Postscript file, compressed and uuencoded, 15 pages, to appear in Proceedings of EACL-95, Dublin

Context construction as subtask of dialogue processing - the VERBMOBIL case

    Get PDF
This paper presents the dialogue component of the speech translation system VERBMOBIL. In particular, it describes the Dialogue Memory which has been developed to represent contextual information acquired during dialogue processing. Information is stored both chronologically, i.e. in the order of appearance (in the Sequence Memory) and conceptually (in the Thematic Structure). We show how the Dialogue Memory is used to draw contextual inferences, some of which serve as basis for the detection of indirect speech acts

A multi-dimensional representation of context in a speech translation system : a practical approach

In this paper we show how the notion of context has been refined in order to fulfill the requirements posed by a natural language processing system. We describe the context model of the speech translation system Verbmobil which has been derived from constraints given by various system components. In Verbmobil context is stored in the dialogue memory which is incrementally constructed by the dialogue processing component. We describe our context model and give sample representations. We also relate our model to state of the art approaches in linguistics

Semantic and dialogue processing in the VERBMOBIL spoken dialogue translation system

In this paper we sketch the role of semantic and dialogue processing in the Verbmobil spoken dialogue translation system. A full demonstration system is currently under development although a "mini\u27; demonstration system has been implemented

Criteria for the segmentation of spoken input into individual utterances

This report describes how spoken language turns are segmented into utterances in the framework of the verbmobil project. The problem of segmenting turns is directly related to the task of annotating a discourse with dialogue act information: an utterance can be characterized as a stretch of dialogue that is attributed one dialogue act. Unfortunately, this rule in many cases is insufficient and many doubtful cases remain. We tried to at least reduce the number of unclear cases by providing a number of hands-on rules for segmenting dialogues. In that sense, we hope that this document is helpful for labeling dialogues with discourse information. This report has to be seen as an extension of the verbmobil Report No.65 that includes a detailed discussion of the various dialogue act types employed in verbmobil. All dialogue act types used throughout this report are taken from the set defined there

The Approach to the Thermodynamic Limit in Lattice QCD at \mu\neq0

    Get PDF
The expectation value of the complex phase factor of the fermion determinant is computed to leading order in the pp-expansion of the chiral Lagrangian. The computation is valid for μ<mπ/2\mu<m_\pi/2 and determines the dependence of the sign problem on the volume and on the geometric shape of the volume. In the thermodynamic limit with Li L_i \to \infty at fixed temperature 1/L01/L_0, the average phase factor vanishes. In the low temperature limit where Li/L0L_i/L_0 is fixed as LiL_i becomes large the average phase factor approaches one. The results for a finite volume compare well with lattice results obtained by Allton {\it et al}.. After taking appropriate limits, we reproduce previously derived results for the ϵ\epsilon-regime and for 1-dimensional QCD. The distribution of the phase itself is also computed.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure
