The Effect Of Place Of Origin On The Relative Earnings Of Immigrant Women

    Get PDF
This paper explores the earnings differentials between female immigrants from 14 places of origin when compared to each other and a number of other groups.   The very large differences in average earnings between female immigrant groups are found to be largely due to human capital and family characteristic differences.  The study employs OLS regression to make earnings comparisons between immigrant women from each of the 14 places of origin to three reference groups.  We find that although female immigrants from most countries are doing well relative to female natives, they fall significantly behind native males and male immigrants, even after controlling for differences in human capital.  Thus, some groups of immigrant women suffer a double disadvantage in the U.S. workforce, one due to gender and the other due to their relatively low levels of human capital

Best technique for fixation of displaced transverse olecranon fractures: tension band wiring or plate fixation?

    Get PDF
Background: Fractures of olecranon are common fractures in upper limb. Tension band wiring (TBW) and plate fixation (PF) are mostly used techniques but choice is based on type of fracture and surgeon’s preference. Methods:  A study assessed functional results in 28 patients that were enrolled after the clinical event of trauma has occurred. Patients were divided into two groups- Group (A) for TBW and Group (B) for PF; here gender, age and side of fracture were ignored. Post-operative functional outcome were evaluated by using the Mayo Elbow Performance (MEP) and the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) score parameters. Results: Mean (SD) union time as determined by postoperative radiographs was 8.5 (1.48) weeks for group (A) and 9 (2.08) weeks for group (B). Mean (SD) MEP score at 9 months in group (A) 84.28 (7.28) and 80.71 (10.92) in group (B). Mean (SD) DASH at 9 months in group (A) 12.2 (8.8) and 11.7 (10.4) in group (B). Complications were reported in group (A) 6 patient (42.85%) out of 14 patients and in group (B) 1 patient (7.14%) out of 14 patients. Conclusions: The current study shows that there are no significant differences in functional outcome between both the study groups. Due to lesser complications, we recommend the plate fixation approach as the better choice for transverse displaced olecranon fractures. More large scale studies are required to further confirm our results

Quantum Coherence Oscillations in Antiferromagnetic Chains

Macroscopic quantum coherence oscillations in mesoscopic antiferromagnets may appear when the anisotropy potential creates a barrier between the antiferromagnetic states with opposite orientations of the Neel vector. This phenomenon is studied for the physical situation of the nuclear spin system of eight Xe atoms arranged on a magnetic surface along a chain. The oscillation period is calculated as a function of the chain constant. The environmental decoherence effects at finite temperature are accounted assuming a dipole coupling between the spin chain and the fluctuating magnetic field of the surface. The numerical calculations indicate that the oscillations are damped by a rate (N1)/τ\sim (N-1)/ \tau, where NN is the number of spins and τ\tau is the relaxation time of a single spin.Comment: 10 pages, Latex, two postscript figures; submitted to Phys. Breakup Density in Spectator Fragmentation

Proton-proton correlations and correlations of protons, deuterons and tritons with alpha particles from spectator decays following 197Au + 197Au collisions at 1000 MeV per nucleon have been measured with two highly efficient detector hodoscopes. The constructed correlation functions, interpreted within the approximation of a simultaneous volume decay, indicate a moderate expansion and low breakup densities, similar to assumptions made in statistical multifragmentation models. Proton-proton correlations and correlations of p-alpha, d-alpha, and t-alpha from spectator decays following Au + Au collisions at 1000 AMeV have been measured with an highly efficient detector hodoscope. The constructed correlation functions indicate a moderate expansion and low breakup densities similar to assumptions made in statistical multifragmentation models. In agreement with a volume breakup rather short time scales were deduced employing directional cuts in proton-proton correlations. Greek high phenolic early harvest extra virgin olive oil reduces the over-excitation of information-flow based on dominant coupling mode model in patients with mild cognitive impairment: an EEG resting-state validation approach

Background:Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) constitutes a natural compound with high protection over cognitive function that could positively alter brain dynamics and the mixture of within and between-frequency connectivity. Objective:The balance of cross-frequency coupling over within-frequency coupling can build a nonlinearity index (NI) that encapsulates the over-excitation of information flow between brain areas and across experimental time. The present study investigated for the very first time how the Greek High Phenolic Early Harvest Extra Virgin Olive Oil (HP-EH-EVOO) versus Moderate Phenolic (MP-EVOO) and Mediterranean Diet (MeDi) intervention in people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) could affect their spontaneous EEG dynamic connectivity. Methods:Forty-three subjects (14 in MeDi, 16 in MP-EVOO, and 13 in HP-EH-EVOO) followed an EEG resting-state recording session (eyes-open and closed) before and after the treatment. Following our dominant coupling mode model, we built a dynamic integrated dynamic functional connectivity graph that tabulates the functional strength and the dominant coupling mode model of every pair of brain areas. Results:Signal spectrum within 1–13 Hz and theta/beta ratio have decreased in the HP-EH-EVOO group in the eyes-open condition. The intervention improved the FI D oCM across groups and conditions but was more prominent in the HP-EH-EVOO group (p <  0.001). Finally, we revealed a significant higher post-intervention reduction of NI (ΔNITotal and α ) for the HP-EH-EVOO compared to the MP-EVOO and MeDi groups (p <  0.0001). Conclusion:Long-term intervention with HP-EH-EVOO reduced the over-excitation of information flow in spontaneous brain activity and altered the signal spectrum of EEG rhythms

Thermal and Chemical Freeze-out in Spectator Fragmentation

Isotope temperatures from double ratios of hydrogen, helium, lithium, beryllium, and carbon isotopic yields, and excited-state temperatures from yield ratios of particle-unstable resonances in 4He, 5Li, and 8Be, were determined for spectator fragmentation, following collisions of 197Au with targets ranging from C to Au at incident energies of 600 and 1000 MeV per nucleon. A deviation of the isotopic from the excited-state temperatures is observed which coincides with the transition from residue formation to multi-fragment production, suggesting a chemical freeze-out prior to thermal freeze-out in bulk disintegrations.Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, submitted to Phys. Circumstantial Evidence for a Critical Behavior in Peripheral Au + Au Collisions at 35 MeV/nucleon

The fragmentation resulting from peripheral Au + Au collisions at an incident energy of E = 35 MeV/nucleon is investigated. A power-law charge distribution, AτA^{-\tau} with τ2.2\tau \approx 2.2, and an intermittency signal are observed for events selected in the region of the Campi scatter plot where "critical" behavior is expected.Comment: 11 pages, RevTex file, 4 postscript figures available upon request from [email protected]
