Background: Transforaminal epidural steroid injection (TFESI) is a useful therapeutic tool for lumber disc herniation with radiculopathy. TFESI reduce inflammation and edema around herniated disc and nerve root, thus alleviating pain and accelerating the natural history of the herniated disc by shrinkage. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of TFESI in lumber disc herniation with radiculopathy. Methods: In this prospective observational study, 273 patients were included considering inclusion & exclusion criteria. All subjects received TFESI for lumber disc herniation with radiculopathy. The primary outcome was assessed with a Bengali version of Oswestry disability index (ODI) score and Roland-Morris disability questionnaire (RMDQ) scores at 2 weeks, 1 month, 3 months and 1 year. Results: From baseline (18.6±3.6), mean RMDQ score was significantly reduced at 2 weeks (14.4±3.7), at 1 month (13.8±3.8), at 3 months (11.6±3.6) and at 1 year (7.8±3.7) respectively. 69.2% patients had severe disability at baseline according to disability rank of ODI score; after procedure during follow up severe disability was found in 21.6% cases at 2 weeks, 9.1% at 1 month, 5.0% at 3 months and 1.2% at 1 year. The reduction of severe disability from baseline in subsequent follow up was significant. From baseline (45.7±10.0), mean ODI score was significantly reduced at 2 weeks (36.4±9.0), at 1 month (28.2±8.9), at 3 months (24.3±8.9) and at 1 year (18.9±10.5) respectively. Conclusions: Transforaminal epidural steroid injection significantly reduced disability and provide improved functional outcome in patients with lumber disc herniation with radiculopathy

New insights into the medicinal importance, physiological functions and bioanalytical aspects of an important bioactive compound of foods ‘Hyperin’: Health benefits of the past, the present, the future

Herbal medicines have been used for the treatment of various disorders in the world since very early age. A large number of phytochemicals have been derived from the natural sources in the form of food supplement, neutraceuticals, oils and colour pigments. Flavonoids are a widely distributed group of phytochemicals having benzo-pyrone nucleus. Till so far more than 4000 different types of flavonoids have been described and categorized into different groups like flavonols, flavones, flavanones, isoflavones, catechins and anthocyanidins. Flavonoids have an attractive candidate in the food industry as natural colorants due to its health beneficial effect and safety issue. Hyperin, an important flvonoid were found in the different plants have various pharmacological activities like antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antiviral, antibacterial, antiparasitic, cardioprotective, hepatoprotective and antispasmodic. The aim of this review is to collect all the valuable scientific information of hyperin regarding its medicinal importance, pharmacological activities, isolation and analytical techniques. From the presented data’s in this review it will be beneficial to the scientific person, pharmaceutical manufacturer and consumers in order to it health beneficial effect of hyperin. Thus this valuable information will be helpful to the researchers for developing alternative methods of treatment for different diseases

Emerging advances in cancer nanotheranostics with graphene nanocomposites: opportunities and challenges

International audienceAs an inorganic nanomaterial, graphene nanocomposites have gained much attention in cancer nanotechnology compared with the other inorganic nanomaterial in recent times. Although a relatively new drug carrier, it has been extensively explored as a potential chemotherapeutic carrier and theranostic because of its numerous physicochemical properties, including, capability of multiple pay load, functionalization for drug targeting and photothermal effect. Despite potential benefit, its translation from bench to bed-side in cancer therapy is challenged due to its toxicity concern. Here, we discussed the present progress and future possibilities of graphene nanocomposites as a cancer theranostic. Moreover, the paper also exemplifies the effects of graphene/graphene oxide on tissues and organ functions in order to understand the extent and mechanism of toxicity

Nanoporous metal organic frameworks as hybrid polymer–metal composites for drug delivery and biomedical applications

    No full text
International audienceMetal organic frameworks (MOFs), porous hybrid polymer-metal composites at the nanoscale, are recent innovations in the field of chemistry; they are novel polymeric materials with diverse biomedical applications. MOFs are nanoporous materials, consisting of metal ions linked together by organic bridging ligands. The unique physical and chemical characteristics of MOFs have attracted wider attention from the scientific community, exploring their utility in the field of material science, biology, nanotechnology and drug delivery. The practical feasibility of MOFs is possible owing to their abilities for biodegradability, excellent porosity, high loading capacity, ease of surface modification, among others. In this regard, this review provides an account of various types of MOFs, their physiochemical characteristics and use in diverse disciplines of biomedical sciences - with special emphasis on drug delivery and theranostics. Moreover, this review also highlights the stability and toxicity issues of MOFs, along with their market potential for biomedical applications

Rice Price Stabilization in Bangladesh: An Analysis of Policy Options

To meet its overall objective of ensuring food security for all households, the Government of Bangladesh undertakes several activities: it intervenes in markets to stabilize prices, targets food distribution to poor households and provides emergency relief after natural disasters. This paper provides measures of the variability of domestic and international rice prices, and examines the mix of government intervention and private sector participation in rice markets. The analysis shows that the relatively high degree of price stability achieved in the 1990s was due in large part to private sector imports that stabilized markets following major production shortfalls. Domestic rice procurement contributed relatively little to raising domestic producer prices at harvest time, involved only a small percentage of farmers, and incurred excessive costs following successful harvests because of procurement prices set far in excess of market prices. ii TABLE OF CONTENTS 1
