Professional Characteristic Development of Occupational Therapy Students in Traditional vs. Hybrid Pathways

The development of professional characteristics is crucial to becoming a well-rounded, competent occupational therapist. An exploratory sequential mixed method design was used to determine if there was a difference in the growth of professional characteristics of students in a three-year entry-level Doctor of Occupational Therapy (OTD) program who attended a traditional on-campus program compared to a hybrid program. Ten second and third-year occupational therapy students from the traditional and hybrid pathways participated in a focus group related to cultivating professional characteristics. The themes that evolved from the focus group included: teamwork/team player, time management, communication, self-awareness, critical thinking, and leadership. The themes were then used to create survey questions related to the development of professional characteristics. Twenty first-year, 23 second-year, and 25 third-year students completed the survey. Twenty-seven of the 68 survey participants attended the program in the traditional pathway, and 41 of the 68 survey participants attended the hybrid pathway. Outcomes from the survey data suggest that there are significant differences in professional characteristics between traditional and hybrid students in the areas of listening (p-value = 0.024) and assertive communication (p-value = 0.003), in which traditional students rated their agreement of the development of these characteristics higher than the hybrid students. The results of this study emphasize the importance of professional occupational therapy education regardless of the delivery model (hybrid or traditional) to help mature professional characteristics in students and prepare them for clinical practice

Multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA) analysis is an effective tool for the detection of novel intragenic PLA2G6 mutations: Implications for molecular diagnosis

Phospholipase associated neurodegeneration (PLAN) comprises a heterogeneous group of autosomal recessive neurological disorders caused by mutations in the PLA2G6 gene. Direct gene sequencing detects 85% mutations in infantile neuroaxonal dystrophy. We report the novel use of multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA) analysis to detect novel PLA2G6 duplications and deletions. The identification of such copy number variants (CNVs) expands the PLAN mutation spectrum and may account for up to 12.5% of PLA2G6 mutations. MLPA should thus be employed to detect CNVs of PLA2G6 in patients who show clinical features of PLAN but in whom both disease-causing mutations cannot be identified on routine sequencin

Developing a Reliable Welfare Assessment Tool for Captive Hibernatory Bear Species

Animal welfare assessments are essential for the identification of welfare hazards and benchmarking of welfare improvements, though welfare assessments for zoo species are lacking. Bears are commonly housed in zoos but currently no composite welfare assessment tool exists for captive bears. This study describes the development of such a tool for use across hibernating bear species. A draft tool was developed using indicators derived from the literature and a modified Delphi analysis with an international group of bear keepers. A total of 18 bear keepers from 12 zoos were recruited to trial the tool on 24 brown bears and American black bears. The participating keepers assessed their bears three times across a period of nine days. Intraclass correlation coefficients analysis was used to analyse inter-, intra-rater and item reliability. The inter- and intra-rater reliability showed good to excellent levels of agreement (>0.7, p 0.05). Item reliability was also assessed and showed good to excellent levels of agreement (>0.75, p 0.05). The resulting bear welfare assessment is an important step in identifying and understanding challenges to bear welfare in captivity

Cognitive impairment in sporadic cerebral small vessel disease:A systematic review and meta-analysis

This paper is a proposal for an update on the characterization of cognitive impairments associated with sporadic cerebral small vessel disease (SVD). We pose a series of questions about the nature of SVD-related cognitive impairments and provide answers based on a comprehensive review and meta-analysis of published data from 69 studies. Although SVD is thought primarily to affect executive function and processing speed, we hypothesize that SVD affects all major domains of cognitive ability. We also identify low levels of education as a potentially modifiable risk factor for SVD-related cognitive impairment. Therefore, we propose the use of comprehensive cognitive assessments and the measurement of educational level both in clinics and research settings, and suggest several recommendations for future research
