‘Go Fish’: Conceptualising the challenges of engaging national web archives for digital research

    Get PDF
Our work considers the sociotechnical and organisational constraints of web archiving in order to understand how these factors and contingencies influence research engagement with national web collections. In this article, we compare and contrast our experiences of undertaking web archival research at two national web archives: the UK Web Archive located at the British Library and the Netarchive at the Royal Danish Library. Based on personal interactions with the collections, interviews with library staff and observations of web archiving activities, we invoke three conceptual devices (orientating, auditing and constructing) to describe common research practices and associated challenges in the context of each national web archive. Through this framework we centre the early stages of the research process that are often only given cursory attention in methodological descriptions of web archival research, to discuss the epistemological entanglements of researcher practices, instruments, tools and methods that create the conditions of possibility for new knowledge and scholarship in this space. In this analysis, we highlight the significant time and energy required on the part of researchers to begin using national web archives, as well as the value of engaging with the curatorial infrastructure that enables web archiving in practice. Focusing an analysis on these research infrastructures facilitates a discussion of how these web archival interfaces both enable and foreclose on particular forms of researcher engagement with the past Web and in turn contributes to critical ongoing debates surrounding the opportunities and constraints of digital sources, methodologies and claims within the Digital Humanities

THE THREE-DIMENTIONAL PELVIC MOTION IN THE ACCELERATION AND MAXIMUM PHASES

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanism of pelvic motion in the acceleration and maximum velocity phases. Eleven male sprinters performed 30 m and 60 m sprints at maximal effort and captured sprint movement at 15 m and 50 m. The contact time was significantly longer, and the angular displacement of pelvic elevation on the frontal plane was significantly greater in the acceleration phase than in the maximum velocity phase. Additionally, the angular displacement of pelvic elevation on the frontal plane showed a significantly positive correlation with the contact time and the stance length in the acceleration phase. These findings suggest that the greater pelvic frontal plane motion in the acceleration phase could increase the contact time and longer stance length

LOWER LIMB KINETIC CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SIDE-HOP TEST IN HEALTHY INDIVIDUALS

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the kinetics of lower limb joints and the side-hop test (SHT) time in healthy individuals and to clarify the factors that may influence performance on the SHT. Twenty male athletes performed the SHT. The SHT time and lower limb joint torque (hip, knee, and ankle) were calculated to explore the relationship between the two variables. The relationship between the SHT time and joint torque was found specifically at the medial and lateral contact phases of the SHT. These results suggest that hip joint function may be important in the medial contact phase. In the knee joint, it was suggested that the load at the frontal plane of the knee joint increases with shorter SHT time. We have provided these results for researchers/clinicians who consider the performance characteristics related to shorter times in the SHT

Purification and Characterization of l-Methionine Decarboxylase from Streptomyces sp. 590

L-Methionine decarboxylase [EC 4.1.1.57] catalyzes the decarboxylation of L-methionine and is a pyridoxal 5’-phosohate(PLP)-dependent enzyme. L-Methionine decarboxylase has been purified 630-fold by DEAE-Toyopearl 650M, Phenyl-Toyopearl 650M and Sephacryl S-300 column chromatographies from Streptomyces sp.590. The enzyme has a dimeric structure with identical subunits of Mr 60,000. This enzyme shows optimum activity at pH7.0 and 45°C, and is stable between pH5.7 and pH9.0. L-Methionine decarboxylase has antitumor activity against RERF-LC-AI and HeLa cells. Ten N-terminal amino acid sequence of L-methionine decarboxylase was determined, and the sequence showed no homology with other reported proteins

Behavioural finance: the decoy effect on stock investment decisions

    Get PDF
Purpose: This study aims to investigate the occurrence of the decoy effect in stock investment decisions based on fundamental analysis. Design/methodology/approach: In this study, the decoy effect was investigated by applying two questionnaires, one of them with the presence of a decoy alternative, to a set of 224 respondents with knowledge of business fundamentals, simulating investment decisions in stocks of companies listed on the Brazilian Stock Exchange. The data analysis was performed using the Fisher's exact test, Student's t-test and ANOVA. The research also aimed to detect a potential relationship between the variables gender, age, degree and professional experience with the type of decision made. Findings: The results pointed to the occurrence of the decoy effect when analysing the general response data. However, such evidence was not confirmed when the sample was analysed by classes (gender, course, age and professional experience). There is no statistical evidence that the decoy effect influences classes. Originality/value: The recent decoy effect literature is little explored in investment decision-making. This study is unique in examining the decoy effect in investment decisions in the Brazilian context
