    Metal complex oligomer and polymer wires on electrodes: Tactical constructions and versatile functionalities

    AbstractThis review covers recent progress in the construction of metal complex wires on various substrates via the stepwise coordination method, their functions, and the electrochemical evaluation of bis(terpyridine)metal complex oligomer wires on electrodes. In the layer-by-layer process of metal complex wire construction, various combinations of anchor ligands, metal sources, and bridging ligands have been used. The prepared structures show multiple functions, including photocurrent generation, catalytic activity, insulation properties, and long-range electron transport abilities. The electron transport behavior, and the long-range electron transport abilities from the terminal redox site to the electrode via bis(terpyridine)metal complex wires, were evaluated using potential step chronoamperometry. The remarkable long-range electron transport abilities were evidenced in the small values for the attenuation factor, β. The influence of the building blocks in the metal complex wires on the β value and the electron transfer rate constant was demonstrated

    Geometric trade-off between contractile force and viscous drag determines the actomyosin-based motility of a cell-sized droplet

The cell body is propelled by the contractile force of actomyosin networks transmitted from the cell membrane to the external substrates. However, physical determinants of actomyosin-based migration capacity in confined environments are not fully understood. Here, we develop an in vitro migratory cell model, where cytoplasmic actomyosin networks are encapsulated into droplets surrounded by a lipid monolayer membrane. We find that the droplet can move when the actomyosin networks are bound to the membrane, in which the physical interaction between the contracting actomyosin networks and the membrane generates a propulsive force. The droplet moves faster when it has a larger contact area with the substrates, while narrower confinement reduces the migration speed. By combining experimental observations and active gel theory, we propose a mechanism where the balance between sliding friction force, which is a reaction force of the contractile force, and viscous drag determines the migration speed, providing a physical basis of actomyosin-based motility in confined environments

    Rapid Disease Progression of Advanced Non-small Cell Lung Cancer Five Months after Cessation of Pembrolizumab

    We report a case of late-onset hyperprogressive disease after cessation of a PD-1 inhibitor. A male was diagnosed with metastatic lung adenocarcinoma with little progression for 2 months before treatment. He received pembrolizumab as a second-line treatment and was subsequently prescribed docetaxel for 3 months until a slight increase in pleural effusion. At the time of progression to docetaxel, he commenced prednisolone because of immune-system-related diarrhea. After that, his general condition rapidly worsened with severe fatigue and hypoxia. Computed tomography revealed a massive increase of pleural effusion and replacement of almost the entire liver with cancer over a period of 5 weeks

    A Feasibility Study on the Simultaneous Sensing of Turbidity and Chlorophyll a Concentration Using a Simple Optical Measurement Method

    We have been developing a wireless sensor network system to monitor the quality of lake water in real time. It consists of a sensor module and a system module, which includes communication and power modules. We have focused on pH, turbidity and chlorophyll a concentration as the criteria for qualifying lake water quality. These parameters will be detected by a microfluidic device based sensor module embedded in the wireless sensor network system. In order to detect the turbidity and the chlorophyll a concentration simultaneously, we propose a simple optical measurement method using LED and photodiode in this paper. Before integrating a turbidity and chlorophyll a concentration sensor into the microfluidic device based pH sensor, we performed feasibility studies such as confirmation of the working principle and experiments using environmental water samples. As a result, we successfully verified our simultaneous sensing method by using a simple optical setup of the turbidity and the chlorophyll a concentration

    Laparoscopic Resection of a Primary Retroperitoneal Mucinous Cystadenoma

    Primary retroperitoneal mucinous cystadenoma (PRMC) is a rare cystic lesion occurring mostly in women with a histological analogy to ovarian mucinous cystadenoma. The tumor is difficult to detect during early stages because it causes symptoms only when it grows large enough to be palpable or to displace the adjacent internal organs. The primary treatment is resection, but the optimal surgical approach remains poorly known. We report the case of a 41-year-old woman who complained of right-sided intermittent abdominal pain. Imaging studies revealed a right retroperitoneal smooth cystic lesion (50 mm) without invasive features. Laparoscopic resection was then performed. During surgery, a right retroperitoneal mass with no connection to neighboring tissues was found. The tumor, wrapped by retroperitoneal fat tissue, was resected and removed from the body without exposure. Furthermore, histopathological findings indicated PRMC. The patient was discharged without any complications and observed to have no recurrence 6 months postoperatively

    Laparoscopic Resection of an Abdominal Wall Metastasis 5 Years after Primary Colorectal Cancer Resection

    We report the case of a 65-year-old male with a metachronous abdominal wall metastasis secondary to colorectal cancer. The patient had presented 5 years ago to another facility with a perforated sigmoid colon cancer (pT4a[SE], N0, M0, pStage II), rectal cancer (T2[MP], N0, M0, pStage I), and Fournier gangrene. He had then undergone sigmoidectomy and rectal resection along with S-1 adjuvant chemotherapy. No relapse was observed thereafter. However, currently, 5 years after initial surgery, the patient noticed a palpable mass in the left lower abdomen and was referred to our hospital for further assessment and treatment. Percutaneous echo-guided needle biopsy of the tumor revealed an adenocarcinoma tissue. Following 6 courses of FOLFOX plus cetuximab chemotherapy, laparoscopic resection for abdominal wall metastasis was successfully performed. The resected tissue was pathologically characterized as adenocarcinoma, which was compatible with the recurrence of the primary colorectal carcinoma resected 5 years ago. The abdominal wall metastasis was attributed to the cancer cell implantation secondary to the perforated sigmoid colon cancer treated 5 years ago
