High Redshift HCN Emission: Dense Star-Forming Molecular Gas in IRAS F10214+4724
Hydrogen cyanide emission in the J=1-0 transition has been detected at
redshift z=2.2858 in IRAS F10214+4724 using the Green Bank Telescope . This is
the second detection of HCN emission at high redshift. The large HCN line
luminosity in F10214 is similar to that in the Cloverleaf (z=2.6) and the
ultra-luminous infrared galaxies Mrk231 and Arp220. This is also true of the
ratio of HCN to CO luminosities. The ratio of far-infrared luminosity to HCN
luminosity, an indicator of the star formation rate per solar mass of dense
gas, follows the correlation found for normal spirals and infrared luminous
starburst galaxies. F10214 clearly contains a starburst that contributes,
together with its embedded quasar, to its overall infrared luminosity. A new
technique for removing spectral baselines in the search for weak, broad

Molecular clouds in Orion and Monoceros
About one-eighth of a well-sampled 850 deg. sq. region of Orion and Monoceros shows CO emission coming from either local clouds (d < 1 kpc) lying as much as 25 deg. from the galactic plane or from more distant objects located within a few degrees of the plane. Local giant clouds associated with Orion A and B have enhanced temperatures and densities near their western edges possibly due to compression by a high pressure region created by approx.10 supernovae that occurred in the Orion OB association. Another giant cloud associated with Mon R2 may be related to the Orion clouds. Two filamentary clouds (one possibly 300 pc long but 10 pc wide) may represent a new class of object. An expanding ring of clouds concentric with the H II region ionized by lambda Ori probably constitute fragments of the original cloud from which lambda Ori formed; the gas pressure of the H II region and the rocket effect probably disrupted the original cloud. At a distance of 3 kpc, a large (250 x 100 pc) and massive (7-11x10 to the 5th power solar mass) cloud was found with the unusual combination of low temperatures (T sub R < 2.7 K) and wide spectral lines (approx. 7 km /sec). Most of the signs of star formation expected for such a massive cloud being absent, this may be a young cloud that has not yet started to form stars. The approx. 15 large clouds found in the outer galaxy (1 approx. 206 deg. - 220 deg.) probably lie in two spiral arms. 90GHz and 150GHz observations of the Orion M42 region. A sub-millimeter to radio analysis
We have used the new 90GHz MUSTANG camera on the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank
Telescope (GBT) to map the bright Huygens region of the star-forming region M42
with a resolution of 9" and a sensitivity of 2.8mJy/beam. 90GHz is an
interesting transition frequency, as MUSTANG detects both the free-free
emission characteristic of the HII region created by the Trapezium stars,
normally seen at lower frequencies, and thermal dust emission from the
background OMC1 molecular cloud, normally mapped at higher frequencies. We also
present similar data from the 150GHz GISMO camera taken on the IRAM telescope.
This map has 15" resolution. By combining the MUSTANG data with 1.4, 8, and
21GHz radio data from the VLA and GBT, we derive a new estimate of the emission
measure (EM) averaged electron temperature of Te = 11376K by an original method
relating free-free emission intensities at optically thin and optically thick
frequencies. Combining ISO-LWS data with our data, we derive a new estimate of
the dust temperature and spectral emissivity index within the 80" ISO-LWS beam
toward OrionKL/BN, Td = 42K and Beta=1.3. We show that both Td and Beta
decrease when going from the HII region and excited OMC1 interface to the
denser UV shielded part of OMC1 (OrionKL/BN, Orion S). With a model consisting
of only free-free and thermal dust emission we are able to fit data taken at
frequencies from 1.5GHz to 854GHz.Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, submitted to the Astrophysical Journa
Testing the Persistence of Phenotypic Plasticity After Incubation in the Western Fence Lizard, Sceloporus Occidentalis
Hypothesis: Phenotypic variation in traits induced by different incubation temperatures does not persist into the lifetime of young lizards, and therefore contributes little to variation in long-term fitness.
Organism: Western fence lizard (Sceloporus occidentalis).
Methods: Split-clutch laboratory incubation experiment including eggs from two different populations under two different incubation regimes, measurement of morphological traits at hatching, and tracking of morphology and temperature preference behaviour for 7 weeks after hatching.
Results: Several morphological traits, including body mass, hindlimb length, inter-limb length, and tail length, initially differed between the two incubation treatments, but only the difference in tail length persisted to age 7 weeks. Thermal preference was relatively conserved, with juveniles showing no difference in mean selected body temperatures across treatments; however, warm-incubated lizards thermoregulated more precisely than their cool-incubated counterparts.
Conclusion: Studies of incubation effects can reveal changes in animal phenotypes post-hatching, but if these effects do not persist, they may not be subject to natural selection and consequently be of little ecological relevance
Coulomb-nuclear interference in the breakup of Be
Within a theory of breakup reactions formulated in the framework of the post
form distorted wave Born approximation, we calculate contributions of the pure
Coulomb and the pure nuclear breakup as well as those of their interference
terms to a variety of cross sections in breakup reactions of the one-neutron
halo nucleus Be on a number of target nuclei. In contrast to the
assumption often made, the Coulomb-nuclear interference terms are found to be
non-negligible in case of exclusive cross sections of the fragments emitted in
this reaction on medium mass and heavy target nuclei. The consideration of the

Diffuse HI Disks in Isolated Galaxies
In order to investigate the contribution of diffuse components to their total
HI emission, we have obtained high precision HI line flux densities with the
100m Green Bank Telescope for a sample of 100 isolated spiral and irregular
galaxies which we have previously observed with the 43m telescope. A comparison
of the observed HI line fluxes obtained with the two different telescopes,
characterized by half-power beam widths of 9 arcmin and 21 arcmin respectively,
exploits a ``beam matching'' technique to yield a statistical determination of
the occurrence of diffuse HI components in their disks. A simple model of the
HI distribution within a galaxy well describes ~75 % of the sample and accounts
for all of the HI line flux density. The remaining galaxies are approximately
evenly divided into two categories: ones which appear to possess a
significantly more extensive HI distribution than the model predicts, and ones
for which the HI distribution is more centrally concentrated than predicted.
Examples of both extremes can be found in the literature but little attention
has been paid to the centrally concentrated HI systems. Our sample has
demonstrated that galaxies do not commonly possess extended regions of low
surface brightness HI gas which is not accounted for by our current
understanding of the structure of HI disks. Eight HI-rich companions to the
target objects are identified, and a set of extragalactic HI line flux density
calibrators is presented.Comment: 26 page
Elastic scattering and breakup of 17^F at 10 MeV/nucleon
Angular distributions of fluorine and oxygen produced from 170 MeV 17^F
incident on 208^Pb were measured. The elastic scattering data are in good
agreement with optical model calculations using a double-folding potential and
parameters similar to those obtained from 16^O+208^Pb. A large yield of oxygen
was observed near \theta_lab=36 deg. It is reproduced fairly well by a
calculation of the (17^F,16^O) breakup, which is dominated by one-proton
stripping reactions. The discrepancy between our previous coincidence
measurement and theoretical predictions was resolved by including core
absorption in the present calculation.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure
