    Profile of female students of engineering universities in Mexico and Spain

    Gender studies in higher education have emerged in parallel to reflections and rising feminist movement. The main objectives of academic feminism are related to women's visibility improvement as well as soft skills developers’ roles. But a gap in TECH studies can be detected. Women studies in higher education are mostly related to life and social sciences, behavioral, journalism and information, business and management and law, in contrast to engineering, architecture, manufacturing, construction, ICT or any kind of TECH studies. Thus, the main objective of this work is related to survey design in order to develop a qualitative research to inquire about TECH higher education, female population profile, both at UdG-CUALTOS (Guadalajara, Mexico) and UPC (Barcelona, Spain).This profile can provide some influent identity elements, related to perceptions and expectations of women-TECH, deemed appropriate from their professions as engineers.     Courtship plasticity reveals the evolution of dialects in allopatric fish populations

    Traditionally, reproductive isolation between disjoint populations has been thought to emerge as a result of the accumulation of different mutations, genetic drift, or through the effects of natural and sexual selection^1^. Alternatively, the ability of an organism to express different phenotypes depending on the environment (i.e. phenotypic plasticity) could produce reproductive isolation^2,3^. Sexually selected traits are expected to be phenotypically plastic and can result in modifications of the species recognition system and thus originate new species^4^. Here we show that the population-characteristic male courtship behaviour of a fish (Girardinichthys multiradiatus) is modified in the presence of females from other populations, that this is due to the males responding to subtle cues from females, and that they fail to emulate the female's population-characteristic behaviour. We conclude that plasticity has led to the creation of local dialects in the courtship pattern that hampers communication between heterogametic individuals and promotes pre-mating isolation

    Preparing relative and near kin caregivers : evaluation of ROOTS

    Family and Children’s Services at the Monterey County Department of Social and Employment Services, MCDSES, strive for children’s stability and safety. In Monterey County, there are too many unsuccessful relative and near kin placements. Relatives and near kin caregivers are mandated to complete ROOTS training, Relative Offering Ongoing Ties and Support. ROOTS\u27 curriculum intends to increase caregiver\u27s knowledge to prepare and guide them in becoming a stable home for a child in need. The evaluation of ROOTS, a knowledge based pre/posttest, demonstrated the caregivers\u27 appreciation of support and it gave a broad understanding of the knowledge gained by the caregivers

    Constraining New Physics with D meson decays

    Latest Lattice results on DD form factors evaluation from first principles show that the standard model (SM) branching ratios prediction for the leptonic Ds→ℓνℓD_s \to \ell \nu_\ell decays and the semileptonic SM branching ratios of the D0D^0 and D+D^+ meson decays are in good agreement with the world average experimental measurements. It is possible to disprove New Physics hypothesis or find bounds over several models beyond the SM. Using the observed leptonic and semileptonic branching ratios for the D meson decays, we performed a combined analysis to constrain non standard interactions which mediate the csˉ→lνˉc\bar{s}\to l\bar{\nu} transition. This is done either by a model independent way through the corresponding Wilson coefficients or in a model dependent way by finding the respective bounds over the relevant parameters for some models beyond the standard model. In particular, we obtain bounds for the Two Higgs Doublet Model Type-II and Type III, the Left-Right model, the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model with explicit R-Parity violation and Leptoquarks. Finally, we estimate the transverse polarization of the lepton in the D0D^0 decay and we found it can be as high as PT=0.23P_T=0.23.Comment: 28 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables.     A new strategy for probing the Majorana neutrino CP violating phases and masses

    We propose a new strategy for detecting the CP-violating phases and the effective mass of muon Majorana neutrinos by measuring observables associated with neutrino-antineutrino oscillations in π±\pi^{\pm} decays. Within the generic framework of quantum field theory, we compute the non-factorizable probability for producing a pair of same-charged muons in π±\pi^{\pm} decays as a distinctive signature of νμ−νμˉ\nu_{\mu}-\bar{\nu_{\mu}} oscillations. We show that an intense neutrino beam through a long baseline experiment is favored for probing the Majorana phases. Using the neutrino-antineutrino oscillation probability reported by MINOS collaboration, a new stringent bound on the effective muon-neutrino mass is derived.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur

    Scattering processes could distinguish Majorana from Dirac neutrinos

    It is well known that Majorana neutrinos have a pure axial neutral current interaction while Dirac neutrinos have the standard vector-axial interaction. In spite of this crucial difference, usually Dirac neutrino processes differ from Majorana processes by a term proportional to the neutrino mass, resulting in almost unmeasurable observations of this difference. In the present work we show that once the neutrino polarization evolution is considered, there are clear differences between Dirac and Majorana scattering on electrons. The change of polarization can be achieved in astrophysical environments with strong magnetic fields. Furthermore, we show that in the case of unpolarized neutrino scattering onto polarized electrons, this difference can be relevant even for large values of the neutrino energy.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure
