What can we learn about the lepton CP phase in the next 10 years?

    Get PDF
We discuss how the lepton CP phase can be constrained by accelerator and reactor measurements in an era without dedicated experiments for CP violation search. To characterize globally the sensitivity to the CP phase \delta_{CP}, we introduce a new measure, the CP exclusion fraction, which quantifies what fraction of the \delta_{CP} space can be excluded at a given input values of \theta_{23} and \delta_{CP}. Using the measure we study the CP sensitivity which may be possessed by the accelerator experiments T2K and NOvA. We show that, if the mass hierarchy is known, T2K and NOvA alone may exclude, respectively, about 50%-60% and 40%-50% of the \delta_{CP} space at 90% CL by 10 years running, provided that a considerable fraction of beam time is devoted to the antineutrino run. The synergy between T2K and NOvA is remarkable, leading to the determination of the mass hierarchy through CP sensitivity at the same CL.Comment: Analyses and plots improved, conclusions unchanged, 23 pages, 8 figures, 1 tabl

A new fractional derivative without singular kernel: Application to the modelling of the steady heat flow

In this article we propose a new fractional derivative without singular kernel. We consider the potential application for modeling the steady heat-conduction problem. The analytical solution of the fractional-order heat flow is also obtained by means of the Laplace transform.Comment: 1 figur

3-D TRANSIENT SIMULATION OF A FLAT CAPPILARY HEAT PIPE VIA AN INTERFACE TRACKING METHOD

In capillary and micro heat pipes the internal porous media is replaced by acapillary groove, yielding a meniscus formed by the liquid phase. The meniscus height varies along the groove length, from the condenser section to the evaporator section, and the difference between the pressures in each extremity is responsible for pumping the liquid. Such devices have been employed in electronic cooling, due its small dimensions. This system provides excellent thermal control, assuring uniform temperature distribution. In previous works related to capillary heat pipe simulation, empirical or simple 1-D models have been used, but not taking into account the complete unsteady phenomena. In this work, the 3-D unsteady simulation of a flat micro heat pipe is presented, where the meniscus radius is considered constant along the transversal section. The phase change problem of a heated liquid meniscus in a groove is simulated via an interface tracking method, which is an hybrid Lagrangean-Eulerian method for moving boundary problems. A variation of the one-dimensional Stephan problem is used to validate the numerical code

Measuring the Relative Performance of Providers of a Health Service

A methodology is developed and applied to compare the performance of publicly funded agencies providing treatment for alcohol abuse in Maine. The methodology estimates a Wiener process that determines the duration of completed treatments, while allowing for agency differences in the effectiveness of treatment, standards for completion of treatment, patient attrition, and the characteristics of patient populations. Notably, the Wiener process model separately identifies agency fixed effects that describe differences in the effectiveness of treatment ('treatment effects'), and effects that describe differences in the unobservable characteristics of patients ('population effects'). The estimated model enables hypothetical comparisons of how different agencies would treat the same populations. The policy experiment of transferring the treatment practices of more cost-effective agencies suggests that Maine could have significantly reduced treatment costs without compromising health outcomes by identifying and transferring best practices.

The Higgs decay rate to two photons in a model with two fermiophobic-Higgs doublets

We consider a three Higgs doublet model with an S3S_3 symmetry in which beside the SM-like doublet there are two fermiophobic doublets. Due to the new charged scalars there is an enhancement in the two-photon decay while the other channels have the same decay widths that the SM neutral Higgs. The fermiophobic scalars are mass degenerated unless soft terms breaking the S3S_3 symmetry are added.Comment: typos were corrected, the figures have been modified and the conclusions were increased. PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF THERMAL DIODES

The thermal diode consists in a common brick empty inside, where the internal cavity is geometrically arranged as two rectangles, disposed one over the other but not aligned. When the lower side is heated, natural convection in the air inside yields high heat transfer rates from this side to the other. When the upper side is heated, the heat transfer should run by pure conduction, and the brick with air inside works as a thermal insulator. As this brick allows a good conductance in one direction and insulation in the opposite sense, it behaves as an electric diode, being known as thermal diode. This principle is already known for a long time, but its use is still not extensive, and there are no basic rules for the cavity design or even a theoretical study of viability for this use replacing the conventional insulation systems. The objective of this work is to simulate the heat transfer process inside a thermal diode, in order to obtain the optimal geometry and dimensions and to verify the viability of its use in buildings for thermal optimization. The numerical data are validated through comparing with that obtained from the test applied to cellular concrete bricks
