Challenging the Scientific Foundations for an IUCN Red List of Ecosystems
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is currently discussing the development of a Red List of Ecosystems (RLE) that would mirror the categories and criteria used to assess the conservation status of species. The suggested scientific foundations for the RLE are being considered by IUCN for adoption as the backbone of the RLE. We identify conceptual and operational weaknesses in the draft RLE approach, the categories, and criteria.While species are relatively well-described units, there is no consistent means to classify ecosystems for assessing conservation status. The proposed RLE is framed mostly around certain features of ecosystems such as broad vegetation or habitat types, and do not consider major global change drivers such as climate change. We discuss technical difficulties with the proposed concept of ecosystem collapse and suggest it is not analogous to species extinction. We highlight the lack of scientific basis for the criteria and thresholds proposed by the RLE, and question the need to adopt the structure of the Red List of Species for an RLE. We suggest that the proposed RLE is open to ambiguous interpretations and uncertain outcomes, and that its practicality and benefit for conservation should be carefully evaluated before final approval
Charge-exchange mechanisms at the threshold for inelasticity in Ne+ collisions with surfaces
We present a study on scattering of 100–1400 eV Ne+ ions off Mg, Al, Si, and P surfaces. Exit energy distributions and yields of single-scattered Ne+ and Ne2+ were separately measured to investigate charge exchange mechanisms occurring at the onset of inelastic losses in binary hard collision events. At low incident energies, collisions appear elastic and projectile ion survival is dominated by nonlocal Auger-type neutralization involving the target valence band. However, once a critical Rmin (distance of closest approach) is reached, three phenomena occur simultaneously: Ne2+ generation, reversal of the Ne+ yield trend, and inelastic losses in Ne+ and Ne2+. Rmin values for the Ne2+ turn-on agree very well with the L-shell overlap distances of the colliding partners, suggesting that electron transfer involving the highly promoted 4fsigma molecular orbital (correlated to the Ne 2p) at close internuclear distance (~0.5 Å) is responsible. For the Ne+ yield, a clear transition from nonlocal neutralization to Rmin-dependent collision induced neutralization was observed. Binary collision inelasticities (Qbin) were evaluated for Ne+ and Ne2+ off Al and Si by taking into account electron straggling. Saturation-like behavior at RminNe** (2p43s2, 41–45 eV) and Ne+-->Ne+** (2p33s2/3s3p, 69–72 eV), followed by autoionization as the projectile leaves the surface region to give Ne+ and Ne2+. In contrast, Qbin values for Ne2+ at the +2 turn-on were seen much lower (35–40 eV off Al, 55–60 eV off Si) than that required for double promotion—eliminating the possibility that Ne2+ is only generated in double excitation of surviving Ne+. Thus single-electron excitation appears to be more important in the threshold region compared to the two-electron events seen at higher collision energies. In addition, the Ne+[Single Bond]P system shows striking similarities with the other target cases from the perspective of a well-defined Ne2+ turn-on, continually increasing Ne2+ yield with impact energy, and inelasticity values which point to the same 4fsigma excitation pathway. The decreasing Rmin requirement for higher target Z in terms of Ne2+ production has been confirmed for the Mg through P series, where hard collision excitation is governed by L-shell orbital overlaps
Evidence of Simultaneous Double-Electron Promotion in F+ Collisions with Surfaces
A high-flux beam of mass-filtered F+ at low energy (100–1300 eV) was scattered off Al and Si surfaces to study core-level excitations of F0 and F+. Elastic scattering behavior for F+ was observed at energies 450 (700) eV off Al (Si) produces F2+—behavior which is remarkably similar to Ne+ off the same surfaces. Inelasticities measured for single collision events agree well with the energy deficits required to form (doubly excited) F** and F+** states from F0 and F+, respectively; these excited species most likely decay to inelastic F+ and F2+ via autoionization
A Comparison of Risk Exposure in Aquaculture and Agricultural Businesses
Agriculture and aquaculture have common features associated with their biological nature affecting risk exposure of the businesses. The aim of this paper is to compare risk exposure in salmon farming and agricultural enterprises in Norway by using an implicit error component model to examine the risk structure of yields, prices and economic returns at the farm level. Results indicate a higher farm-level year-to-year variability in yields, prices and economic returns in salmon farming than in agricultural enterprises. The variability in livestock enterprises was generally lower than for crop enterprises. Return on assets was highest in salmon farming with an average annual return of 9.2%. All of the agricultural farm types exhibited a negative average return on assets on average. Stochastic dominance tests of the distribution of economic returns from aquaculture and agricultural farm types showed salmon farming to be the most risk efficient alternative and salmon farming was most attractive from an investor’s perspective.Risk analysis, variability, Norway, Risk and Uncertainty,
Sexual frequency is associated with age of natural menopause: results from the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation
It is often observed that married women have a later age of natural menopause (ANM) than unmarried women; however, the reason for this association is unknown. We test an original hypothesis that sexual frequency acts as a bio-behavioural mediator between marital status and ANM. We hypothesize that there is a trade-off between continued ovulation and menopause based on the woman's chances of becoming pregnant. If a woman is sexually inactive, then pregnancy is impossible, and continued investment in ovulation would not be adaptive. In addition, we test an existing hypothesis that the observed relationship is because of the exposure to male pheromones. Data from 2936 women were drawn from 11 waves of the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation, which is a longitudinal study conducted in the United States. Using time-varying Cox regression, we found no evidence for the pheromone hypothesis. However, we did observe that women who reported to have sex weekly during the study period were 28% less likely to experience menopause than women who had sex less than monthly. This is an indication that ANM may be somewhat facultative in response to the likelihood of pregnancy
An evolutionary perspective on kin care directed up the generations
Within evolutionary sciences, care towards younger kin is well understood from an inclusive fitness framework, but why adults would care for older relatives has been less well researched. One existing model has argued that care directed towards elderly parents might be adaptive because of their benefits as carers themselves, with their help freeing up the middle generations’ energy which can then be invested into direct reproduction. However, in this model, elder care is more beneficial to fitness if the carer is fecund. To offer an initial test of this hypothesis, we look at caring behaviour relative to fecundity status in a contemporary dataset from the United Kingdom. If elder care is contingent on possible direct fitness benefits, we would expect women who are still menstruating to care more for their parents than women who can no longer reproduce. Based on this, we also predict that women who are physiologically post-reproductive would invest more in their grandchildren, through whom they can increase their inclusive fitness. After controlling for age and other relevant factors, we find that women who are still menstruating spend more time caring for their parents than those who are not, and the reverse is true when looking at time spent caring for grandchildren. These findings demonstrate that potential inclusive fitness outcomes influence how women allocate care up and down the generations
Detection of Coulomb Charging around an Antidot
We have detected oscillations of the charge around a potential hill (antidot)
in a two-dimensional electron gas as a function of a perpendicular magnetic
field B. The field confines electrons around the antidot in closed orbits, the
areas of which are quantised through the Aharonov-Bohm effect. Increasing B
reduces each state's area, pushing electrons closer to the centre, until enough
charge builds up for an electron to tunnel out. This is a new form of the
Coulomb blockade seen in electrostatically confined dots. We have also studied
h/2e oscillations and found evidence for coupling of opposite spin states of
