    A reusable, externally applied thermal protection system for use on aerospace vehicles subject to high thermal and mechanical stresses utilizes a shell tile structure which effectively separates its primary functions as an insulator and load absorber. The tile consists of structurally strong upper and lower metallic shells manufactured from materials meeting the thermal and structural requirements incident to tile placement on the spacecraft. A lightweight, high temperature package of insulation is utilized in the upper shell while a lightweight, low temperature insulation is utilized in the lower shell. Assembly of the tile which is facilitated by a self-locking mechanism, may occur subsequent to installation of the lower shell on the spacecraft structural skin

    A satellite in the form of a large rotating rim which can be used to boost spacecraft from low-Earth orbit to higher orbits is described. The rim rotates in the plane of its orbit such that the lower portion of the rim is traveling at suborbital velocity, while the upper portion is travelling at greater than orbital velocity. Ascending spacecraft or payloads arrive at the lowest portion of the rim at suborbital velocities, where the payloads are released on a trajectory for higher orbits; descending payloads employ the reverse procedure. Electric thrusters placed on the rim maintain rim rotational speed and altitude. From the standpoint of currently known materials, the capture-ejector concept may be useful for relatively small velocity increments

    A miniature spectrally selective dosimeter capable of measuring selected bandwidths of radiation exposure on small mobile areas is described. This is achieved by the combination of photovoltaic detectors, electrochemical integrators (E-cells) and filters in a small compact case which can be easily attached in close proximity to and substantially parallel to the surface being measured. In one embodiment two photovoltaic detectors, two E-cells, and three filters are packaged in a small case with attaching means consisting of a safety pin. In another embodiment, two detectors, one E-cell, three filters are packaged in a small case with attaching means consisting of a clip to clip over a side piece of an eye glass frame

    Preliminary Design of a New Hybrid and Technology Innovative Suborbital Vehicle for Space Tourism

    The general enthusiasm aroused by space tourism combined with the great technological achievement of Scaled Composites with the SpaceShipOne in 2004 initiated a new era: suborbital space tourism. As of today, most of the vehicles have been designed for performance, combining the most advanced technologies from both aeronautics and astronautics. Nevertheless, in order to become viable, vehicles must be safe enough to carry paying passengers and they must match the increasing demand. Thus, the implementation of a new design process based on adapted requirements led to a new vehicle. The latter is mainly powered by newly designed hybrid rocket engines but it also makes use of turbofans for the first segment of the climb and a safe powered landing. It takes-off and lands horizontally and is able to carry up to eight passengers and two pilots to an altitude of 109 km. The micro-gravity experienced by the passengers lasts approximately 4 minutes while the maximum load factor is reduced to 3.3 g in order to improve the passenger experience
