    Artificial Neural Networks in archaeology

    Artificial neural networks are adaptive models that can be used for classification and pattern recognition purposes. ANNs do not differ from standard statistical models. The main difference between ANNs and traditional statistical models is their construction and definition process. In fact ANNs are adaptive in the sense that they can learn. Landscape Archaeology is a research area where the application of ANNs can be very useful. ANNs can be used for Landscape pattern recognition and Settlement systems modeling. This paper illustrate some aspects of the development of new tools and the application of ANNs in a raster GIS environment for archaeological predictive modeling purposes

    Results of automatic and continuous analysis of both physical and chemical parameters of sea water between Marbella (Malaga) and Brest (Mechelen cruise, Mediterranean 1968, supported by the « Institut royal des Sciences naturelles de Belgique ») are studied in this paper.Two conclusions are reached: 1° The distribution of salinity, temperature and nitrate, sometimes anomalous, appears to follow some rythm or law. 2° There appears a close spacial relationship too between these anomalies and fishery. Then, it is possible to use the continuous automatic method for the exploratory work on fishery technology

    A Femtosecond Neutron Source

    The possibility to use the ultrashort ion bunches produced by circularly polarized laser pulses to drive a source of fusion neutrons with sub-optical cycle duration is discussed. A two-side irradiation of a thin foil deuterated target produces two countermoving ion bunches, whose collision leads to an ultrashort neutron burst. Using particle-in-cell simulations and analytical modeling, it is evaluated that, for intensities of a few 1019Wcm210^{19} W cm^{-2}, more than 10310^3 neutrons per Joule may be produced within a time shorter than one femtosecond. Another scheme based on a layered deuterium-tritium target is outlined.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figure

    Surface Oscillations in Overdense Plasmas Irradiated by Ultrashort Laser Pulses

    The generation of electron surface oscillations in overdense plasmas irradiated at normal incidence by an intense laser pulse is investigated. Two-dimensional (2D) particle-in-cell simulations show a transition from a planar, electrostatic oscillation at 2ω2\omega, with ω\omega the laser frequency, to a 2D electromagnetic oscillation at frequency ω\omega and wavevector k>ω/ck>\omega/c. A new electron parametric instability, involving the decay of a 1D electrostatic oscillation into two surface waves, is introduced to explain the basic features of the 2D oscillations. This effect leads to the rippling of the plasma surface within a few laser cycles, and is likely to have a strong impact on laser interaction with solid targets.Comment: 9 pages (LaTeX, Revtex4), 4 GIF color figures, accepted for publication in Phys.     The paper presents a methodology for the integrated sustainability assessment of a product-service system lifecycle, with the purpose to support continuous improvement on the side both of the manufacturer and of the user. Its eight steps are an extension of ISO 14040 life cycle assessment and consider all three sustainability dimensions – economic, environmental and social – and a service perspective, using the service unit. A set of indicators for the three dimensions, aligned to the service unit concept, is proposed based on literature suggestions

    Starting from enantiomeric pure 1-[(3S,5R)- and 1-[(3R,5S)-3-(hydroxymethyl)-2-methylisoxazolidin-5-yl]-5-methylpyrimidine-2,4(1H,3H)-diones (-)7a and (+)7b, obtained by lipase-catalyzed resolution, pure diethyl{[(3S,5R)-2-methyl-5-(5-methyl-2,4-dioxo-3,4-dihydropyrimidin-1(2H)-yl)isoxazolidin-3-yl]methyl}phosphonate (-)12a and diethyl{[(3R,5S)-2-methyl-5-(5-methyl-2,4-dioxo-3,4-dihydropyrimidin-1(2H)-yl)isoxazolidin-3-yl]methyl}phosphonate (+)12b have been synthesized. The obtained compounds showed no cytotoxic activity versus the U937 cell line in comparison with AZT, and were poorly able to inhibit HIV infection in vitro

    Ion dynamics and coherent structure formation following laser pulse self-channeling

    The propagation of a superintense laser pulse in an underdense, inhomogeneous plasma has been studied numerically by two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations on a time scale extending up to several picoseconds. The effects of the ion dynamics following the charge-displacement self-channeling of the laser pulse have been addressed. Radial ion acceleration leads to the ``breaking'' of the plasma channel walls, causing an inversion of the radial space-charge field and the filamentation of the laser pulse. At later times a number of long-lived, quasi-periodic field structures are observed and their dynamics is characterized with high resolution.     Experimental and numerical study of a micro-cogeneration Stirling unit under diverse conditions of the working fluid

    Micro-cogeneration Stirling units are promising for residential applications because of high total efficiencies, favorable ratios of thermal to electrical powers and low CO as well as NOx emissions. This work focuses on the experimental and the numerical analysis of a commercial unit generating 8 kW of hot water (up to 15 kW with an auxiliary burner) and 1 kW of electricity burning natural gas. In the experimental campaign, the initial pressure of the working fluid is changed in a range from 9 to 24 barg – 20 barg being the nominal value – while the inlet temperature of the water loop and its mass flow rate are kept at the nominal conditions of, respectively, 50°C and 0.194 kg/s. The experimental results indicate clearly that the initial pressure of the working fluid – Nitrogen – affects strongly the net electrical power output and efficiency. The best performance for the output and efficiency of 943 W and 9.6% (based on the higher heating value of the burnt natural gas) are achieved at 22 barg. On the other hand, the thermal power trend indicates a maximum value of 8420 W at the working pressure of 24 barg, which corresponds to a thermal efficiency of 84.7% (again based on higher heating value). Measurements are coupled to a detailed model based on a modification of the work by Urieli and Berchowitz. Thanks to the tuning with the experimental results, the numerical model allows investigating the profiles of the main thermodynamic parameters and heat losses during the cycle, as well as estimating those physical properties that are not directly measurable. The major losses turn to be the wall parasitic heat conduction from heater to cooler and the non-unitary effectiveness of the regenerator

    Phosphonated isoxazolinyl nucleosides have been prepared via 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction of nitrile oxides with corresponding vinyl or allyl nucleobases for antiviral studies. The cytotoxicity, the anti-HSV activity and the RT-inhibitory activity of the obtained compounds were evaluated and compared with those of AZT and diethyl{(10SR,40RS)-10-[[(5-methyl-2,4-dioxo-3,4- dihydropyrimidin-1(2H)-yl)]-30-methyl-20-oxa-30-azacyclopent-40-yl]}methylphosphonate, a saturated phosphonated dihydroisoxazole nucleoside analogue
