Delivery suite assessment unit: auditing innovation in maternity triage
yesA Delivery Suite Assessment Unit (DSAU) has been established at a large Northern teaching hospital. This was as a recommendation of ASQUAM (achieving sustainable quality in maternity) to reduce antenatal admissions to delivery suite and provide a more appropriate environment for women attending for antenatal or labour assessment. The DSAU has also provided an effective teaching environment where skills such as effective telephone triage, diagnosis of labour and care of women with pre-labour spontaneous rupture of membranes (SROM) have been developed by junior staff.
The first twelve months' audit results indicate that the establishment of the DSAU has been successful in reducing antenatal admissions to delivery suite by increasing the transfers of clients home, rather than to the antenatal wards. This may reflect the confidence of the highly skilled midwives working in this environment and the confidence women feel about their ability to obtain prompt and accurate advice over the telephone

Witches or wise women
This article presents findings from my PhD study entitled Midwifery knowledge and the medical student experience. The research study sought to explore the question: ‘What do medical students learn from midwives?’ In the first part of this dual-phase project I conducted a Delphi study with an international panel of midwives to examine the concept of ‘midwifery knowledge’ (MacVane 2013a). Data from the Delphi survey were used to inform the second phase, which employed a longitudinal case study approach to explore medical students’ experiences of working with midwives during a specialist obstetric rotation. Thirteen medical students, who were recruited from a fourth-year cohort, participated in interviews at the start, middle and end of their specialist obstetric rotation. The students spent the majority of the rotation at their local teaching hospital (LTH), but also spent an interim two-week period at a variety of district general hospitals (DGH)

Obtaining Informed Consent in an Egyptian Research Study
noThis article explores the concept of internationally acceptable codes of ethics within the context of an Egyptian nurse’s PhD studies. Theoretical work, including gaining ethical approval for the project, took place in the UK, while the data collection phase of the study was done in Egypt. This highlighted areas where the Arab Muslim interpretation of some ethical principles, especially around the issue of gaining informed consent, differed from that currently accepted in British research ethics. The authors argue that it may not be possible, or even desirable, to standardize codes of ethics globally in areas such as academic research. Ethical principles develop from a unique mix of culture and religion. It may be more important to develop cultural competence that includes the ability to understand and respect the way in which ethical principles are interpreted by various societies
