    Interactions suppress Quasiparticle Tunneling at Hall Bar Constrictions

    Tunneling of fractionally charged quasiparticles across a two-dimensional electron system on a fractional quantum Hall plateau is expected to be strongly enhanced at low temperatures. This theoretical prediction is at odds with recent experimental studies of samples with weakly-pinched quantum-point-contact constrictions, in which the opposite behavior is observed. We argue here that this unexpected finding is a consequence of electron-electron interactions near the point contact.Comment: 4 page

    Baseline Scotland : groundwater chemistry of the Carboniferous sedimentary aquifers of the Midland Valley

    This report describes the baseline groundwater chemistry of the sedimentary aquifers of Carboniferous age in the Midland Valley of Scotland. Groundwater is an important resource in the Midland Valley, largely for agriculture, but also for industry – including food and drink processing and mineral water bottling, and for domestic use. A large but unquantified volume of groundwater is also still pumped from former mine workings, largely coal mines, in order to maintain water levels and for quality treatment. Analyses for 62 groundwater samples were interpreted for the purposes of this study. Of these, 36 samples were collected for the Baseline Scotland project between September and December 2008. These were augmented with a further 25 samples collected during separate BGS projects since 2001. The sites were chosen largely to be representative of groundwater in the area, and sources that were very poorly constructed were avoided. A small number of samples were deliberately targeted from mines, either from adits, shafts or boreholes. The data were classed in one of five different hydrogeological units (or aquifer groups): four chronostratigraphic groups, which in decreasing order of age are the Inverclyde, Strathclyde, Clackmannan and Coal Measures groups; and a fifth group incorporating waters sampled from mine discharges. An estimate of the baseline groundwater chemistry conditions in the four chronostratigraphic hydrogeological units is presented, based on a statistical summary of the chemical data, which represents values between the 10th and 90th A summary of the conclusions arising from this study follows. percentiles of the full dataset range. This statistical approach to estimating baseline compositions was complemented by selecting 11 analyses of groundwater from sources where there is little or no indication of direct contamination, including likely impact from mining.     Edge State Tunneling in a Split Hall Bar Model

    In this paper we introduce and study the correlation functions of a chiral one-dimensional electron model intended to qualitatively represent narrow Hall bars separated into left and right sections by a penetrable barrier. The model has two parameters representing respectively interactions between top and bottom edges of the Hall bar and interactions between the edges on opposite sides of the barrier. We show that the scaling dimensions of tunneling processes depend on the relative strengths of the interactions, with repulsive interactions across the Hall bar tending to make breaks in the barrier irrelevant. The model can be solved analytically and is characterized by a difference between the dynamics of even and odd Fourier components. We address its experimental relevance by comparing its predictions with those of a more geometrically realistic model that must be solved numerically.Comment: 13 pages, including 4 figures,final version as publishe

    This study attempts to create a comprehensive catalog of all known records of faunal remains recovered from 105 archaeological sites located across southwestern New Mexico. These sites range in age from 2000BC to AD 1450. Approximately 250 taxa of mollusks, fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals are represented in this compilation. Primary reference materials from published and unpublished sources are included, along with the repositories where relevant collections may be found for potential reexamination by researchers from a variety of fields of interest

    A depending on a complex parameter kk superanalog SL{\mathcal S}{\mathcal L} of Calogero operator is constructed; it is related with the root system of the Lie superalgebra gl(nm){\mathfrak{gl}}(n|m). For m=0m=0 we obtain the usual Calogero operator; for m=1m=1 we obtain, up to a change of indeterminates and parameter kk the operator constructed by Veselov, Chalykh and Feigin [2,3]. For k=1,12k=1, \frac12 the operator SL{\mathcal S}{\mathcal L} is the radial part of the 2nd order Laplace operator for the symmetric superspaces corresponding to pairs (GL(V)×GL(V),GL(V))(GL(V)\times GL(V), GL(V)) and (GL(V),OSp(V))(GL(V), OSp(V)), respectively. We will show that for the generic mm and nn the superanalogs of the Jack polynomials constructed by Kerov, Okunkov and Olshanskii [5] are eigenfunctions of SL{\mathcal S}{\mathcal L}; for k=1,12k=1, \frac12 they coinside with the spherical functions corresponding to the above mentioned symmetric superspaces. We also study the inner product induced by Berezin's integral on these superspaces

    Magnetic Anisotropy in Quantum Hall Ferromagnets

    We show that the sign of magnetic anisotropy energy in quantum Hall ferromagnets is determined by a competition between electrostatic and exchange energies. Easy-axis ferromagnets tend to occur when Landau levels whose states have similar spatial profiles cross. We report measurements of integer QHE evolution with magnetic-field tilt. Reentrant behavior observed for the ν=4\nu = 4 QHE at high tilt angles is attributed to easy-axis anisotropy.     Statistics of quantum transport in chaotic cavities with broken time-reversal symmetry

    The statistical properties of quantum transport through a chaotic cavity are encoded in the traces \T={\rm Tr}(tt^\dag)^n, where tt is the transmission matrix. Within the Random Matrix Theory approach, these traces are random variables whose probability distribution depends on the symmetries of the system. For the case of broken time-reversal symmetry, we present explicit closed expressions for the average value and for the variance of \T for all nn. In particular, this provides the charge cumulants \Q of all orders. We also compute the moments of the conductance g=T1g=\mathcal{T}_1.     Entanglement Entropy in the Calogero-Sutherland Model

    We investigate the entanglement entropy between two subsets of particles in the ground state of the Calogero-Sutherland model. By using the duality relations of the Jack symmetric polynomials, we obtain exact expressions for both the reduced density matrix and the entanglement entropy in the limit of an infinite number of particles traced out. From these results, we obtain an upper bound value of the entanglement entropy.
