The presentation was followed by a question and answer period and a breakout room session with questions from the audience and CASIS Vancouver executives. The key points discussed included the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for police work in dealing with forensic cyber investigations and processing digital evidence, as well as building community relationships

    Making Connections at the Personal & Curricular Levels

    Making personal connections and building relationships. Connecting people to information at points of need is at the heart of what we do. As Health Sciences Liaison Librarians at the University of Waterloo, these Librarians will share practical approaches they have used to make connections at the personal & curricular levels in the Department of Kinesiology, and the Schools of Optometry, Pharmacy, and Public Health and Health Systems. Areas to be explored include the value of: - Making personal connections with students early in their academic career - Building meaningful and relevant relationships with researchers - Providing point of need support in the curriculum through assignment based instruction - Strategically marketing our expertise While these Liaison Librarians have their own success stories to share, they also want attendees to learn about innovative approaches taking place in the broader TUG environment. To accomplish this, there will be time for the audience to make personal connections with each other and engage in active discussion. This will provide an opportunity to learn from colleagues, gain insight into areas of interest, and ultimately leave with practical ideas that can be applied to their own liaison and outreach work at TUG libraries

    The impact of cow size on cow-calf and postweaning progeny performance in the Nebraska Sandhills

    Optimizing beef production system efficiency requires an understanding of genetic potential suitable for a given production environment. Therefore, the objective of this retrospective analysis was to determine the influence of cow body weight (BW) adjusted to a common body condition score (BCS) of 5 at weaning-influenced cow-calf performance and postweaning steer and heifer progeny performance. Data were collected at the Gudmundsen Sandhills Laboratory, Whitman, NE, on crossbred, mature cows (n = 1,607) from 2005 to 2017. Cow BCS at calving, prebreeding, and weaning were positively associated (P \u3c 0.01) with greater cow BW. Increasing cow BW was positively associated (P \u3c 0.01) with the percentage of cows that conceived during a 45-d breeding season. For every additional 100-kg increase in cow BW, calf BW increased (P \u3c 0.01) at birth by 2.70 kg and adjusted 205-d weaning BW by 14.76 kg. Calf preweaning average daily gain (ADG) increased (P \u3c 0.01) 0.06 kg/d for every additional 100-kg increase in cow BW. Heifer progeny BW increased (P \u3c 0.01) postweaning with every additional 100-kg increase in dam BW. Dam BW did not influence (P ≥ 0.11) heifer puberty status prior to breeding, overall pregnancy rates, or the percentage of heifers calving in the first 21 d of the calving season. Steer initial feedlot BW increased by 7.20 kg, reimplant BW increased by 10.47 kg, and final BW increased by 10.29 kg (P ≤ 0.01) for every additional 100-kg increase in dam BW. However, steer feedlot ADG was not influenced (P \u3e 0.67) by dam BW. Hot carcass weights of steers were increased (P = 0.01) by 6.48 kg with every additional 100-kg increase in cow BW. In a hypothetical model using the regression coefficients from this study, regardless of pricing method, cow-calf producers maximize the highest amount of profit by selecting smaller cows. Overall, larger-sized cows within this herd and production system of the current study had increased reproductive performance and offspring BW; however, total production output and economic returns would be potentially greater when utilizing smaller-sized cows

Issues identified and recommendations will generally apply to other academic institutions. Understanding the types of bibliometric measures and their limitations makes it possible to identify both appropriate uses and crucial limitations of bibliometric analysis. Recommendations offered at the end of this paper provide a range of opportunities for how researchers and administrators at Waterloo and beyond can integrate bibliometric analysis into their practice

    A MCP1 fusokine with CCR2-specific tumoricidal activity

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The CCL2 chemokine is involved in promoting cancer angiogenesis, proliferation and metastasis by malignancies that express CCR2 receptor. Thus the CCL2/CCR2 axis is an attractive molecular target for anticancer drug development.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We have generated a novel fusion protein using GMCSF and an N-terminal truncated version of MCP1/CCL2 (6-76) [hereafter GMME1] and investigated its utility as a CCR2-specific tumoricidal agent.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We found that distinct to full length CCL2 or its N-truncated derivative (CCL2 5-76), GMME1 bound to CCR2 on mouse lymphoma EG7, human multiple myeloma cell line U266, or murine and human medulloblastoma cell lines, and led to their death by apoptosis. We demonstrated that GMME1 specifically blocked CCR2-associated STAT3 phosphorylation and up-regulated pro-apoptotic BAX. Furthermore, GMME1 significantly inhibited EG7 tumor growth in C57BL/6 mice, and induced apoptosis of primary myeloma cells from patients.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our data demonstrate that GMME1 is a fusokine with a potent, CCR2 receptor-mediated pro-apoptotic effect on tumor cells and could be exploited as a novel biological therapy for CCR2<sup>+ </sup>malignancies including lymphoid and central nervous system malignancies.</p

    Cryo-EM structures of amyloid-β 42 filaments from human brains

    Alzheimer’s disease is characterized by a loss of memory and other cognitive functions and the filamentous assembly of Aβ and tau in the brain. The assembly of Aβ peptides into filaments that end at residue 42 is a central event. Yang et al. used electron cryo–electron microscopy to determine the structures of Aβ42 filaments from human brain (see the Perspective by Willem and Fändrich). They identified two types of related S-shaped filaments, each consisting of two identical protofilaments. These structures will inform the development of better in vitro and animal models, inhibitors of Aβ42 assembly, and imaging agents with increased specificity and sensitivity. —SM

    Cerebral blood volume, genotype and chemosensitivity in oligodendroglial tumours

    INTRODUCTION: The biological factors responsible for differential chemoresponsiveness in oligodendroglial tumours with or without the −1p/−19q genotype are unknown, but tumour vascularity may contribute. We aimed to determine whether dynamic susceptibility contrast (DSC) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) could distinguish molecular subtypes of oligodendroglial tumour, and examined the relationship between relative cerebral blood volume (rCBV) and outcome following procarbazine, lomustine and vincristine (PCV) chemotherapy. METHODS: Pretherapy rCBV was calculated and inter- and intraobserver variability assessed. Allelic imbalance in 1p36, 19q13, 17p13, 10p12–15, and 10q22–26 and p53 mutation (exons 5–8) were determined. rCBV was compared with genotype and clinicopathological characteristics (n=37) and outcome following PCV chemotherapy (n=33). RESULTS: 1p/19q loss was seen in 6/9 grade II oligodendrogliomas, 6/14 grade II oligoastrocytomas, 4/4 grade III oligodendrogliomas, and 3/10 grade III oligoastrocytomas. rCBV measurements had good inter- and intraobserver variability, but did not distinguish histology subtype or grade. Tumours with 1p/19q loss had higher rCBV values (Student’s t-test P=0.001). Receiver operating characteristic analysis revealed a cut-off of 1.59 for identifying genotype (sensitivity 92%, specificity 76%). Tumours with high and low rCBV showed response to chemotherapy. The −1p/−19q genotype, but not rCBV, was strongly associated with response, progression-free and overall survival following PCV chemotherapy. Tumours with high rCBV and intact 1p/19q were associated with shorter progression-free and overall patient survival than those with intact 1p/19q and low rCBV or high rCBV and 1p/19q loss. CONCLUSION: rCBV identifies oligodendroglial tumours with 1p/19q loss, but does not predict chemosensitivity. The prognostic significance of rCBV may differ in oligodendroglial tumours with or without the −1p/−19q genotype
