    New radiocarbon evidence on early rice consumption and farming in South China

    While the possibility of indigenous rice cultivation cannot be entirely ruled out, there is increasing evidence suggesting that rice farming was introduced to South China during the late-Holocene. However, determination of the exact timing of the spread of rice farming to South China is fraught with the lack of reliable radiocarbon dates. In this article, we present 15 new AMS 14C dates of charred plant remains recovered from late-Holocene sites of Shixia and Guye in Guangdong Province of South China. Our new AMS 14C dates suggest a later arrival of rice farming in the Pearl River Delta than previously thought. These new AMS 14C dates will shed new lights to an improved understanding of the environmental background and ecology of the southward spread of rice farming

    Dynamics aspect of subbarrier fusion reaction in light heavy ion systems

    Subbarrier fusion of the 7Li + 12C reaction is studied using an antisymmetrized molecular dynamics model (AMD) with an after burner, GEMINI. In AMD, 7Li shows an \alpha + t structure at its ground state and it is significantly deformed. Simulations are made near the Coulomb barrier energies, i.e., E_{cm} = 3 - 8 MeV. The total fusion cross section of the AMD + GEMINI calculations as a function of incident energy is compared to the experimental results and both are in good agreement at E_{cm} > 3 MeV.     Computed tomography measurement of the bone matrix of vertebral pedicle and its clinical significance

    Background: To provide the anatomic basis for the clinical application of the transpedicular screw fixation. Materials and methods: Thirty spine (C2–L5) specimens were used. The width of the pedicle cortex and width of the pedicle medullary cavity (WPC and WPMC), and the height of the pedicle cortex and height of the pedicle medullary cavity (HPC and HPMC) were measured at the isthmus of the pedicle using computed tomography (CT) scanning. Results: Width of the pedicle medullary cavity changed in a three-dovetailed-saddle shape with four peaks and three valleys, namely C2 (high), C4`5 (low), T2 (high), T4 (the lowest), T12 (high), L1 (low) and L5 (the highest). HPMC of the cervical pedicle changed in a saddle shape, gradually increasing from C5–L5. WPC, WPMC, HPC and HPMC showed a regular change, respectively. In each segment, the superior border of the pedicle cortex had a nearly consistent thickness to the interior border within an identical pedicle, while the pedicle cortex thickness radio of the medial and lateral border was nearly 3:1 among the cervical pedicles, 2:1 among thoracic pedicles, and 1:1 among lumbar pedicles. Conclusions: Both HPMC and WPMC are the dominant factors for the choice of screw diameter, but HPMC should also be considered in C2–T1 pedicles, especially C6 and C7. Additionally, the screw for C3–6 or T4–6 pedicles should be about 3.0 mm in diameter

    The effects of daily fasting hours on shaping gut microbiota in mice

    BACKGROUND: It has recently been reported that intermittent fasting shapes the gut microbiota to benefit health, but this effect may be influenced to the exact fasting protocols. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of different daily fasting hours on shaping the gut microbiota in mice. Healthy C57BL/6 J male mice were subjected to 12, 16 or 20 h fasting per day for 1 month, and then fed ad libitum for an extended month. Gut microbiota was analyzed by 16S rRNA gene-based sequencing and food intake was recorded as well. RESULTS: We found that cumulative food intake was not changed in the group with 12 h daily fasting, but significantly decreased in the 16 and 20 h fasting groups. The composition of gut microbiota was altered by all these types of intermittent fasting. At genus level, 16 h fasting led to increased level of Akkermansia and decreased level of Alistipes, but these effects disappeared after the cessation of fasting. No taxonomic differences were identified in the other two groups. CONCLUSIONS: These data indicated that intermittent fasting shapes gut microbiota in healthy mice, and the length of daily fasting interval may influence the outcome of intermittent fasting

    Substrate-Mediated Borophane Polymorphs through Hydrogenation of Two-Dimensional Boron Sheets

    The two-dimensional boron monolayer (borophene) stands out from the two-dimensional atomic layered materials due to its structural flexibility and tunable electronic and mechanical properties from a large number of allotropic materials. The stability of pristine borophene polymorphs could possibly be improved via hydrogenation with atomic hydrogen (referred to as borophane). However, the precise adsorption structures and the underlying mechanism are still elusive. Employing first-principles calculations, we demonstrate the optimal configurations of freestanding borophanes and the ones grown on metallic substrates. For freestanding borophenes, the energetically favored hydrogen adsorption sites are sensitive to the polymorphs and corresponding coordination numbers of boron atoms. With various metal substrates, the hydrogenation configurations of borophenes are modulated significantly, attributed to the overlap between B pz and H s orbitals. These findings provide a deep insight into the hydrogenating borophenes and facilitate the stabilization of two-dimensional boron polymorphs by engineering hydrogen adsorption sites and concentrations
