    Photo-induced living/controlled surface radical grafting polymerization and its application in fabricating 3-D micro-architectures on the surface of flat/particulate organic substrates

    AbstractThis feature article covers the fundamental chemistry and applications of photo-induced living surface grafting polymerization. The mechanism of activation of inert alkyl C–H bonds of polymer substrates, the structures of the active free radical and reversible dormant species, the modes of the grafting chain growth (including linear, branched and cross-linked variants), and the role of spatial effect are discussed. Two technologies, i.e., 1-step and 2-step processes, their features and applications in fabricating polymer brushes with precisely controlled patterns, desired functions, branched and block grafting chains on planar substrates, and polymer lamination are presented. The fabrication of 3-dimensional covalently bonded polymer particles, such as nano-sized polymer particle monolayers (with uniform and bimodal distributions), discrete solid and hollow polymer particles of micrometer size, and multilayer polymer particles on polymeric substrates are also introduced. In the last part, the application of photo-induced living surface grafting polymerization in non-planar surface modifications, such as the preparation of core–shell polymer particles, Janus particles and cross-linked hydrogels with hairy polymer chains is summarized

    Research progress on the development of pennycress (Thlaspi arvense L.) as a new seed oil crop: a review

    Compared with other crops, pennycress (Thlaspi arvense L.) is a niche emerging oil crop. In recent years, research on pennycress has been increasingly reflected in various directions. Pennycress belongs to the Brassicaceae family and was introduced from Eurasia to North America. It has been found worldwide as a cultivated plant and weed. In this paper, we review the advantages of pennycress as a supplementary model plant of Arabidopsis thaliana, oil and protein extraction technology, seed composition analysis based on metabolomics, germplasm resource development, growth, and ecological impact research, abiotic stress, fatty acid extraction optimization strategy, and other aspects of studies over recent years. The main research directions proposed for the future are as follows: (1) assemble the genome of pennycress to complete its entire genome data, (2) optimize the extraction process of pennycress as biodiesel, (3) analyze the molecular mechanism of the fatty acid synthesis pathway in pennycress, and (4) the functions of key genes corresponding to various adversity conditions of pennycress

    OFAR: A Multimodal Evidence Retrieval Framework for Illegal Live-streaming Identification

    Illegal live-streaming identification, which aims to help live-streaming platforms immediately recognize the illegal behaviors in the live-streaming, such as selling precious and endangered animals, plays a crucial role in purifying the network environment. Traditionally, the live-streaming platform needs to employ some professionals to manually identify the potential illegal live-streaming. Specifically, the professional needs to search for related evidence from a large-scale knowledge database for evaluating whether a given live-streaming clip contains illegal behavior, which is time-consuming and laborious. To address this issue, in this work, we propose a multimodal evidence retrieval system, named OFAR, to facilitate the illegal live-streaming identification. OFAR consists of three modules: Query Encoder, Document Encoder, and MaxSim-based Contrastive Late Intersection. Both query encoder and document encoder are implemented with the advanced OFA encoder, which is pretrained on a large-scale multimodal dataset. In the last module, we introduce contrastive learning on the basis of the MaxiSim-based late intersection, to enhance the model's ability of query-document matching. The proposed framework achieves significant improvement on our industrial dataset TaoLive, demonstrating the advances of our scheme

    Heat shock transcription factor 1 preserves cardiac angiogenesis and adaptation during pressure overload

    To examine how heat shock transcription factor 1 (HSF1) protects against maladaptive hypertrophy during pressure overload, we subjected HSF1 transgenic (TG), knockout (KO) and wild type (WT) mice to a constriction of transverse aorta (TAC), and found that cardiac hypertrophy, functions and angiogenesis were well preserved in TG mice but were decreased in KO mice compared to WT ones at 4 weeks, which was related to HIF-1 and p53 expression. Inhibition of angiogenesis suppressed cardiac adaptation in TG mice while overexpression of angiogenesis factors improved maladaptive hypertrophy in KO mice. In vitro formation of vasculatures by microvascular endothelial cells was higher in TG mice but lower in KO mice than in WT ones. A siRNA of p53 but not a HIF-1 gene significantly reversed maladaptive hypertrophy in KO mice whereas a siRNA of HIF-1 but not a p53 gene induced maladaptive hypertrophy in TG mice. Heart microRNA analysis showed that miR-378 and miR-379 were differently changed among the three mice after TAC, and miR-378 or siRNA of miR-379 could maintain cardiac adaptation in WT mice. These results indicate that HSF1 preserves cardiac adaptation during pressure overload through p53-HIF-1-associated angiogenesis, which is controlled by miR-378 and miR-379

    Involvement of 5-HT1A receptors of the thalamic descending pathway in the analgesic effect of intramuscular heating-needle stimulation in a rat model of lumbar disc herniation

    BackgroundIntramuscular (IM) heating-needle therapy, a non-painful thermal therapy, has been found to exert an analgesic effect via the thalamic ventromedial (VM) nucleus, solely by reducing the triggering threshold for descending inhibition; this could be modulated by intracephalic 5-hydroxytryptamine-1A (5-HT1A) receptors, rather than via the regular analgesia pathway. In this study, the effect and the potential serotonergic mechanism of IM heating-needle stimulation at 43°C were explored in the case of the pathological state of lumbar disc herniation (LDH).MethodsA modified classic rat model of LDH, induced via autologous nucleus pulposus implantation, was utilized. IM inner heating-needles were applied at the attachment point of skeletal muscle on both sides of the L4 and L5 spinous processes. WAY-100635 and 8-OH-DAPT, 5-HT1A receptor antagonist and agonist, were separately injected into the bilateral thalamic mediodorsal (MD) and VM nucleus via an intrathalamic catheter. Nociception was assessed by bilateral paw withdrawal reflexes elicited by noxious mechanical and heat stimulation.ResultsIM heating-needle stimulation at a temperature of 43°C for 30 or 45 min significantly relieved both mechanical and heat hyperalgesia in the rat model of LDH (P < 0.05). Heat hyperalgesia was found to be significantly enhanced by administration of WAY-100635 into the thalamic VM nucleus, blocking the effect of heating-needle stimulation in a dose-dependent manner (P < 0.05), while no effects were detected after injection into the thalamic MD nucleus (P > 0.05). Injection of 8-OH-DAPT into the thalamic MD nucleus exerted no modulating effects on either mechanical or heat hyperalgesia (P > 0.05).ConclusionIM heating-needle stimulation at 43°C for 30 min may activate 5-HT1A mechanisms, via the thalamic VM nucleus, to attenuate hyperalgesia in a rat model of LDH. This innocuous form of thermal stimulation is speculated to selectively activate the descending inhibition mediated by the thalamic VM nucleus, exerting an analgesic effect, without the involvement of descending facilitation of the thalamic MD nucleus

    Sex Differences in Antidepressant Effect of Sertraline in Transgenic Mouse Models

    The main purpose of this study is to explore sex differences in the antidepressant effect of sertraline in genetic knockout or overexpression estrogen-synthesizing enzyme aromatase (Ar) gene mouse models in the forced swim test (FST). Our results demonstrated a significant reduction of depression-like behavior in the mice with overexpression of brain aromatase (Thy1-Ar) compared to sex- and age-matched Ar+/− mice or wild type control mice. Using HPLC analysis, we also found an association between the brain estrogen-related antidepressive behavior and the regulation of serotonin (5-HT) system. Interestingly, a single dose administration of sertraline (10 mg/kg, i.p.) induced reduction of immobility time was found in all genotypes, except male Ar+/− mice. While the underlying mechanisms of sex-specific response on antidepressive effect of sertraline remain to be investigated, our data showed that female mice appear to be more sensitive to sertraline-induced changes of 5-HT system than male mice in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and the hippocampus (HPC).     Charge Measurement of Cosmic Ray Nuclei with the Plastic Scintillator Detector of DAMPE

    One of the main purposes of the DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) is to measure the cosmic ray nuclei up to several tens of TeV or beyond, whose origin and propagation remains a hot topic in astrophysics. The Plastic Scintillator Detector (PSD) on top of DAMPE is designed to measure the charges of cosmic ray nuclei from H to Fe and serves as a veto detector for discriminating gamma-rays from charged particles. We propose in this paper a charge reconstruction procedure to optimize the PSD performance in charge measurement. Essentials of our approach, including track finding, alignment of PSD, light attenuation correction, quenching and equalization correction are described detailedly in this paper after a brief description of the structure and operational principle of the PSD. Our results show that the PSD works very well and almost all the elements in cosmic rays from H to Fe are clearly identified in the charge spectrum.Comment: 20 pages, 4 figure
