Neural Network Control for the Probe Landing Based on Proportional Integral Observer
For the probe descending and landing safely, a neural network control method based on proportional integral observer (PIO) is proposed. First, the dynamics equation of the probe under the landing site coordinate system is deduced and the nominal trajectory meeting the constraints in advance on three axes is preplanned. Then the PIO designed by using LMI technique is employed in the control law to compensate the effect of the disturbance. At last, the neural network control algorithm is used to guarantee the double zero control of the probe and ensure the probe can land safely. An illustrative design example is employed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control approach
Robust Linear Quadratic Regulator via Sliding Mode Guidance for Spacecraft Orbiting a Tumbling Asteroid
Aiming to ensure the stability of the spacecraft with multiuncertainties and mitigate the threat of the initial actuator saturation,
a Robust Linear Quadratic Regulator (RLQR) via sliding mode guidance (SMG) for orbiting a tumbling asteroid is proposed
in this paper. The orbital motion of the spacecraft near a tumbling asteroid is modelled in the body-fixed frame considering the
sun-relative effects, and the orbiting control problem is formulated as a stabilization of a nonlinear time-varying system. RLQR
based on the adaptive feedback linearization is proposed to stabilize the spacecraft orbiting with the uncertainties of the asteroid’s
rotation and gravitational field. In order to avoid the initial actuator saturation, SMG is applied to generate the transition process
trajectory of the closed-loop system. The effectiveness of the proposed control scheme is verified by the simulations of orbiting the
asteroid Toutatis 4179
Meta-analysis of the effect of expression of MYB transcription factor genes on abiotic stress
Background MYB proteins are a large group of transcription factors. The overexpression of MYB genes has been reported to improve abiotic stress tolerance in plant. However, due to the variety of plant species studied and the types of gene donors/recipients, along with different experimental conditions, it is difficult to interpret the roles of MYB in abiotic stress tolerance from published data. Methods Using meta-analysis approach, we investigated the plant characteristics involved in cold, drought, and salt stress in MYB-overexpressing plants and analyzed the degrees of influence on plant performance by experimental variables. Results The results show that two of the four measured plant parameters in cold-stressed plants, two of the six in drought-stressed, and four of the 13 in salt-stressed were significantly impacted by MYB overexpression by 22% or more, and the treatment medium, donor/recipient species, and donor type significantly influence the effects of MYB-overexpression on drought stress tolerance. Also, the donor/recipient species, donor type, and stress duration all significantly affected the extent of MYB-mediated salt stress tolerance. In summary, this study compiles and analyzes the data across studies to help us understand the complex interactions that dictate the efficacy of heterologous MYB expression designed for improved abiotic stress tolerance in plants
Meta-analysis of the effects of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) treatment on climacteric fruit ripening
1-Methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) is an inhibitor of ethylene perception that is widely used to maintain the quality of several climacteric fruits during storage. A large body of literature now exists on the effects of 1-MCP on climacteric fruit ripening for different species and environmental conditions, presenting an opportunity to use meta-analysis to systematically dissect these effects. We classified 44 ripening indicators of climacteric fruits into five categories: physiology and biochemistry, quality, enzyme activity, color, and volatiles. Meta-analysis showed that 1-MCP treatment reduced 20 of the 44 indicators by a minimum of 22% and increased 6 indicators by at least 20%. These effects were associated with positive effects on delaying ripening and maintaining quality. Of the seven moderating variables, species, 1-MCP concentration, storage temperature and time had substantial impacts on the responses of fruit to 1-MCP treatment. Fruits from different species varied in their responses to 1-MCP, with the most pronounced responses observed in rosaceous fruits, especially apple, European pear fruits, and tropical fruits. The effect of gaseous 1-MCP was optimal at 1 μl/l, with a treatment time of 12–24 h, when the storage temperature was 0 °C for temperate fruits or 20 °C for tropical fruits, and when the shelf temperature was 20 °C, reflecting the majority of experimental approaches. These findings will help improve the efficacy of 1-MCP application during the storage of climacteric fruits, reduce fruit quality losses and increase commercial value
Wild Bird Migration across the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau: A Transmission Route for Highly Pathogenic H5N1
BACKGROUND: Qinghai Lake in central China has been at the center of debate on whether wild birds play a role in circulation of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus H5N1. In 2005, an unprecedented epizootic at Qinghai Lake killed more than 6000 migratory birds including over 3000 bar-headed geese (Anser indicus). H5N1 subsequently spread to Europe and Africa, and in following years has re-emerged in wild birds along the Central Asia flyway several times. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: To better understand the potential involvement of wild birds in the spread of H5N1, we studied the movements of bar-headed geese marked with GPS satellite transmitters at Qinghai Lake in relation to virus outbreaks and disease risk factors. We discovered a previously undocumented migratory pathway between Qinghai Lake and the Lhasa Valley of Tibet where 93% of the 29 marked geese overwintered. From 2003-2009, sixteen outbreaks in poultry or wild birds were confirmed on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, and the majority were located within the migratory pathway of the geese. Spatial and temporal concordance between goose movements and three potential H5N1 virus sources (poultry farms, a captive bar-headed goose facility, and H5N1 outbreak locations) indicated ample opportunities existed for virus spillover and infection of migratory geese on the wintering grounds. Their potential as a vector of H5N1 was supported by rapid migration movements of some geese and genetic relatedness of H5N1 virus isolated from geese in Tibet and Qinghai Lake. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: This is the first study to compare phylogenetics of the virus with spatial ecology of its host, and the combined results suggest that wild birds play a role in the spread of H5N1 in this region. However, the strength of the evidence would be improved with additional sequences from both poultry and wild birds on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau where H5N1 has a clear stronghold
Identification of Important Physiological Traits and Moderators That Are Associated with Improved Salt Tolerance in CBL and CIPK Overexpressors through a Meta-Analysis
The CBL-CIPK pathway is a plant-specific Ca2+ sensor relaying pathway that has been shown to be involved in plant response to salt stress. Over-expression of CBL-CIPK network genes has been reported to increase salt tolerance in many studies. The studies on the overexpression of CBL-CIPK network genes, however, have used various indices to evaluate the effect of these genes on salt tolerance and have indicated a variety of roles for the major CBL-CIPK pathway genes. Therefore, it is of great interest to analyze the various effects resulting from the overexpression CBL-CIPK pathway genes and their relation to salt tolerance. The meta-analysis conducted in the present study investigated how over-expression of CBLs or CIPKs in transgenic plants affects the response to salt stress and identified the increase or decrease that occurs in these experimental variables when foreign CIPK or CBL genes are overexpressed in transgenic plants. The data from the collective studies on over-expression of CIPKs indicated that 6 of the 11 examined parameters (main effects) increased by 22% or more, while two of the six examined parameters increased by at least 78% in transgenic plants overexpressing CBL genes. In addition to analyzing the impact of overexpression on the main effects, eight different modifying parameters were also analyzed. Results indicated that several moderators impact the extent to which overexpression of CBLs and CIPKs affect the main parameters. The majority of CBLs have been obtained from dicotyledonous plants and most of the CBLs and CIPKs have been expressed in dicotyledonous plants. In comparison to homologous expression, the meta-analysis indicated that heterogeneous expression of CBLs resulted in greater increases in seed germination. The results of the meta-analysis provide information that could be useful in designing research to examine the mechanisms by which CBL-CIPK pathway genes increase salt tolerance in plants
Effects of light emitting diode lights on plant growth, development and traits a meta-analysis
The various monochromatic Light Emitting Diode (LED) lights are widely used in growth facility for cultivating various plants, particularly horticultural crops because of their higher luminous efficiency, lower radiation and power consumption than the traditional white fluorescent lamp light. However, considerable inconsistent effects have been reported in literature. We conducted a meta-analysis to assess the effects of different colors of LED light on plant growth, development and various traits. Compared to the light from white fluorescent lamps, the red LED light significantly changed 4 out 26 plant characteristics by at least 37%, and blue LED light significantly increased 5 of 26 assessed characteristics by 37% or more. The combination of red/blue LED lights only significantly increased dry weight by 161% among 25 plant characteristics analyzed. Compared to the white LED light, red LED light significantly decreased 2 of 9 plant characteristics by at least 36%, and blue LED light significantly decreased only 1 of 9 plant characteristics, total chlorophyll content, by 42%. In the moderators analyzed, plant taxonomic families significantly influenced the effects of LED lights on shoot dry weight, and plant life cycles and plant taxonomic families significantly affected the effect on stomatal conductance. Through systematic meta-analysis, we found that the effect of LED on plant growth and quality traits was species-specific, and the effect was affected by the cultivation conditions. Therefore, we suggest that researchers be more targeted to experiment, and collect traits associated with practical production, especially related to the quality of product data, such as carotenoids, anthocyanin and other antioxidant compounds. This article is to provide more data with practical application, guide the application of LED in horticultural plant factory
CsICE1 Functions in Cold Tolerance by Regulating Polyamine levels May through Interacting with Arginine Decarboxylase in the Tea Tree
Background: The identification of C-repeat binding factor (CBF), and the characterization as an inducer of CBF Expression 1 (ICE1), and a major activator for C-repeat binding factor, were important breakthroughs in the cold signaling network. Methods: In the present study, the full length cDNA of ICE1 was isolated from the tea tree (Camellia sinensis). CsICE1 protein was located in the cell nucleus as revealed by subcellular localization analysis. To investigate the biological functions of CsICE1, a transgenic line fused with the CsICE1 gene in Arabidopsis thaliana (arabidopsis) was generated by the floral dip method. Results: The CsICE1 was expressed differentially in various tea tree tissues, mostly in buds and leaves, and the transcript level of CsICE1 was increased after 1 h and peaked at 2 h under cold treatment. Transcription activity assay indicated that the spermine synthase (SPMS) and arginine decarboxylase (ADC) genes were possible targets of CsICE1. In addition, the values of net photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, stomatal conductance in transgenic lines declined by less extent than wild-type plants under low temperatures. Furthermore, transcript levels of ADC genes in the transgenic lines had no apparent alteration under normal growth conditions but substantially increased under cold conditions, consistent of changes in free polyamine levels. Taken together, these results demonstrated that CsICE1 plays a positive role in cold tolerance, which may be due to the modulation of polyamine levels through interacting with CsADC
Isolation and expression analysis of Salt Overly Sensitive gene family in grapevine (Vitisvinifera) in response to salt and PEG stress.
Salt stress is one of the major environmental constraints for the production and yield of grape (Vitis vinifera) worldwide. The SOS3 gene family is part of the Salt Overly Sensitive (SOS) signaling pathway, a well-defined signaling pathway known to play a role in plant response to salt stress. In this study, the grapevine SOS3 gene family was annotated and the role of the annotated genes in salinity stress response was characterized. Nine grapevine SOS3 genes was identified in the grapevine genome and was subsequently analyzed. The expression patterns of the nine VviSOS3 genes, as determined by reverse transcription quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR), varied greatly in leaves, roots, and stems of in-vitro grown Pinot noir grapevine cultivar(PN40024) in response to salt (250mM NaCl) and polyethylene glycol 6000 (PEG, osmolality equal to the salt treatment) treatments over a 36h time period. All of the VviSOS3 genes, except VviSOS3.7, were up-regulated in leaves in response to the salt and PEG treatments. The majority of VviSOS3 genes, except VviSOS3.8 were up-regulated in roots in response to the PEG stress, with an opposite expression pattern in the root and stem in response to salt stress. The salinity treatment decreased the soluble protein content. Based on the expression pattern and physiological data, VviSOS3.7 and VviSOS3.8 were identified as candidate genes for further functional characterizations regarding their role in the response of grapevine to salt stress
