Importance of factor-IX-dependent prothrombinase formation - the Josso Pathway,- in clotting plasma
We report a study on the importance of factor IX activation in thromboplastin-dependent coagulation in plasma. Diluted, CaCl2-containing thromboplastin solutions at constant phospholipid concentration were used to trigger the coagulation in plasma from patients with congenital factor IX and factor VIII deñciency in the presence and absence of added factors IX and VIII, and the generation of thrombin activity was monitored. When coagulation is triggered with the high thromboplastin concentrations normally used in clinical routine tests, the generation of thrombin activity in plasma of patients with congenital factor IX deficiency before and after reconstitution with purified factor IX appears identical. When, however, coagulation is triggered with low thromboplastin concentrations, a clear dependency of the generation of thrombin activity on the concentration of factor IX becomes evident at factor IX concentrations lower than 30 nM (about 40% clotting factor activity). Factor VIII is a compulsory cofactor for this factor IX activity because the prothrombinase activity at optimal factor IX concentration is still critically dependent upon the amount of factor VIII present. The lower the amount of thromboplastin, the higher the importance of factor IX and factor VIII activation in thromboplastin-dependent coagulation. This suggests a role of this pathway in pathophysiological thrombin formation
Evidence for SU(3) symmetry breaking from hyperon production
We examine the SU(3) symmetry breaking in hyperon semileptonic decays (HSD)
by considering two typical sets of quark contributions to the spin content of
the octet baryons: Set-1 with SU(3) flavor symmetry and Set-2 with SU(3) flavor
symmetry breaking in HSD. The quark distributions of the octet baryons are
calculated with a successful statistical model. Using an approximate relation
between the quark fragmentation functions and the quark distributions, we
predict polarizations of the octet baryons produced in annihilation
and semi-inclusive deeply lepton-nucleon scattering in order to reveal the
SU(3) symmetry breaking effect on the spin structure of the octet baryons. We
find that the SU(3) symmetry breaking significantly affects the hyperon
polarization. The available experimental data on the polarization
seem to favor the theoretical predictions with SU(3) symmetry breaking. We
conclude that there is a possibility to get a collateral evidence for SU(3)
symmetry breaking from hyperon production. The theoretical errors for our

Correlations, soliton modes, and non-Hermitian linear mode transmutation in the 1D noisy Burgers equation
Using the previously developed canonical phase space approach applied to the
noisy Burgers equation in one dimension, we discuss in detail the growth
morphology in terms of nonlinear soliton modes and superimposed linear modes.
We moreover analyze the non-Hermitian character of the linear mode spectrum and
the associated dynamical pinning and mode transmutation from diffusive to
propagating behavior induced by the solitons. We discuss the anomalous
diffusion of growth modes, switching and pathways, correlations in the
multi-soliton sector, and in detail the correlations and scaling properties in

Effector profiles distinguish <em>formae speciales</em> of <em>Fusarium oxysporum</em>
Formae speciales (ff.spp.) of the fungus Fusarium oxysporum are often polyphyletic within the species complex, making it impossible to identify them on the basis of conserved genes. However, sequences that determine host-specific pathogenicity may be expected to be similar between strains within the same forma specialis. Whole genome sequencing was performed on strains from five different ff.spp. (cucumerinum, niveum, melonis, radicis-cucumerinum and lycopersici). In each genome, genes for putative effectors were identified based on small size, secretion signal, and vicinity to a "miniature impala" transposable element. The candidate effector genes of all genomes were collected and the presence/absence patterns in each individual genome were clustered. Members of the same forma specialis turned out to group together, with cucurbit-infecting strains forming a supercluster separate from other ff.spp. Moreover, strains from different clonal lineages within the same forma specialis harbour identical effector gene sequences, supporting horizontal transfer of genetic material. These data offer new insight into the genetic basis of host specificity in the F. oxysporum species complex and show that (putative) effectors can be used to predict host specificity in F. oxysporum
Camera motion estimation through planar deformation determination
In this paper, we propose a global method for estimating the motion of a
camera which films a static scene. Our approach is direct, fast and robust, and
deals with adjacent frames of a sequence. It is based on a quadratic
approximation of the deformation between two images, in the case of a scene
with constant depth in the camera coordinate system. This condition is very
restrictive but we show that provided translation and depth inverse variations
are small enough, the error on optical flow involved by the approximation of
depths by a constant is small. In this context, we propose a new model of
camera motion, that allows to separate the image deformation in a similarity
and a ``purely'' projective application, due to change of optical axis
direction. This model leads to a quadratic approximation of image deformation
that we estimate with an M-estimator; we can immediatly deduce camera motion

Origin of Life
The evolution of life has been a big enigma despite rapid advancements in the
fields of biochemistry, astrobiology, and astrophysics in recent years. The
answer to this puzzle has been as mind-boggling as the riddle relating to
evolution of Universe itself. Despite the fact that panspermia has gained
considerable support as a viable explanation for origin of life on the Earth
and elsewhere in the Universe, the issue remains far from a tangible solution.
This paper examines the various prevailing hypotheses regarding origin of life
like abiogenesis, RNA World, Iron-sulphur World, and panspermia; and concludes
that delivery of life-bearing organic molecules by the comets in the early
epoch of the Earth alone possibly was not responsible for kick-starting the

Universal and non-universal features of glassy relaxation in propylene carbonate
It is demonstrated that the susceptibility spectra of supercooled propylene
carbonate as measured by depolarized-light-scattering, dielectric-loss, and
incoherent quasi-elastic neutron-scattering spectroscopy within the GHz window
are simultaneously described by the solutions of a two-component schematic
model of the mode-coupling theory (MCT) for the evolution of glassy dynamics.
It is shown that the universal beta-relaxation-scaling laws, dealing with the
asymptotic behavior of the MCT solutions, describe the qualitative features of
the calculated spectra. But the non-universal corrections to the scaling laws
render it impossible to achieve a complete quantitative description using only

Propylene Carbonate Reexamined: Mode-Coupling Scaling without Factorisation ?
The dynamic susceptibility of propylene carbonate in the moderately viscous
regime above is reinvestigated by incoherent neutron and
depolarised light scattering, and compared to dielectric loss and solvation
response. Depending on the strength of relaxation, a more or less
extended scaling regime is found. Mode-coupling fits yield consistently
and K, although different positions of the
susceptibility minimum indicate that not all observables have reached the
universal asymptotics
